The shadow knows!
Flu shot day! My little one was a trooper! No crying! She even said that she eats all her spinach and greens!
The doc was happy with her!

All the wind this morning from the remnants of hurricane zeta must have stirred up a bunch of dust and debris in the air, I went outside for a little bit and came back in, then couldn't stop coughing and sneezing for over 30 minutes lol...Finally I'm calmed down again and my sinuses are settled...

Last night a friend popped in for a visit late, after 10pm, it was good to see him again since haven't heard from him in a couple months, I wondered how he was doing...He stayed around until after midnight, I was getting really tired and after he left I couldn't sleep, finally dozed off after 3am or so only to wake back up around 8am because of the winds hitting the house...

Dogs are a great judge of character. The guy is probably an asshole in his personal/domestic life.

My old Brown Bullet couldn't stand my first wife for no obvious reason. He'd only chew her stuff up and did so with zeal, frequently, would nip at her, ignore her, raise his lip. He knew something and turned out he was right. Got rid of her and we lived happily ever after. Good boy.

Raining for two days. Snowing right now. We were supposed to have a tree crew in here today but no way that's going to happen for a while.

I wanted to know a bit about airships. So I google When did the first airship take flight. It said 1852. Then I googled when was the airship invented. It said 1899.

So it's first flight was 47 years before it was invented.

I believe I heard this on Coast to Coast years ago. There's a coin depicting a roman emperor driving a sports car on the Appian Way. So, the car was driven long before it was invented. I tried to find an image of that coin.

Maybe it was LBJ. See post #6.

The project is postponed a week, instead I'm helping out a friend with a couple issues he has and in return he's going to help me next week with my project...

...

Well, I never got the help from my friend, for two weeks he kept saying he was coming over to help and hasn't shown up yet, so yesterday I worked all afternoon on this project myself...I have the corner of the building blocked back up with temporary blocking and shims to allow the building to resettle, I don't have it all the way level yet though...Next steps are to run a string line where it needs to be and put the long term timber and blocking under it to the level line...Its getting colder now too which isn't too bad as long as I'm active and working outside...Taking a break from it today, feeling my shoulders and back aching a bit, but I will go ahead and mow the grass this afternoon once the sun warms things up some...

I have been to two NHS (National Health Service) hospitals in England in recent months. The first of them is not my usual hospital, and I went there for some ophthalmic appointments, as there is no ophthalmology department at my usual hospital. At this hospital, a member of clinical staff greets you at the door, they take your temperature and put a sticker on you to say that you have been temperature checked. They also hand you one of their masks, that you must put on, even if you have arrived with your own mask. There are plenty of members of staff there to direct you to where you need to go, and they have waived the charges in the car park (so you don't have to queue to use the machine to pay). They have also implemented a one-way system in the corridors, so that you do not come in close proximity to people walking in the opposite direction to you.

Contrast this with my local hospital. They check your temperature at the main entrance, but only once you get through the revolving door, and where there is no enforced social distancing in the queue, and people just keep backing up behind you as they come through the revolving door. If you show up in a mask, that's good enough, even though some available face coverings filter as little as 3% of particulates from the wearer's mouth. If you don't have a mask, you can grab one from a box of masks on a table. When you get through the door, it is a complete free-for-all. The person at the door told me to just go directly where my appointment letter said. There is no one-way system, and there are people who have removed their masks in the narrow corridors where they loiter to speak to one another.

When I got to the outpatient area I needed to go to, the closed door had written on it "Stop! [with a cute stop sign graphic] check in at reception before entering the area." The main reception was about a six minute walk back in the other direction, and I wasn't even sure that there was anyone there when I walked past, so I tried to phone the department I was going to. I got connected to the switch board and when I eventually got through, the phone rang and rang for several minutes, and nobody picked up. Eventually I saw someone come out of the door to where I was going. I asked them if it was OK if I just went in, they said that they did not work there (despite having a hospital lanyard and ID), but that there was another reception through the door around the corner.

So I decided to go in. By this time, it was about eighteen minutes past my appointment time. I spoke to a staff member there, who said they could check me in. They asked for my appointment details, only to tell me that the doctor had just gone home. I asked the staff in there about the sign on the door that tells you not to enter 'the area' until you have checked in. They say that the reception referred to is the one through the door, and that the intended meaning of the sign is that you should come through and go straight to the reception. I tell her that is not at all what the sign says you should do, and ask if she expects patients to be telepathic.

They also did not waive the parking charges, so I had to re-enter the main building to queue for the machine.

I got a rescheduled appointment a week later. So I went again. Last time I was there, I made my phone call by going out of an open side door of the building where my appointment is. This door has a card-swipe lock, but is propped open. You are supposed to enter through the main entrance and follow corridors connecting the buildings to get your appointment location. This time, I walked straight to that door so I did not have to deal with the nonsense at the entrance. I noticed that the sign on the door of the outpatient area where my appointment is no longer has the asinine message about not entering until you have checked in at the reception on the other side of the door. This time, the doctor had not already gone home.

I walked back to my car afterwards, thinking I had been pretty smart in avoiding the entrance, but then I realized I still needed to go through the main entrance to pay for my parking at the machines. So I approached the front door again. This time they had disabled the revolving door, so that it stayed open, but there is still a queue of people trying to get in with little observance of social distancing. I saw someone in front of me moving to pick up a mask from the box of masks, and he put his bare hand on just about every mask in there before the security person told him "sir, you are already wearing a mask" (the masks are not individually wrapped). The same box of masks remained there afterward. (I have heard an almost identical anecdote from a relative who also went there, of someone trying to take multiple masks from the box).

Wow, I would think all the hospitals are following standard protocols regarding covid, especially the social distancing of incoming peoples...Its a mixed bag there, they have no idea 'who is bringing in what' when people enter through those doors...

Are they still practicing hand sanitizing ? Looks like the UK is locked down again for another month .

and when they pointed to Elmhurst Hospital a few months ago with freezer units outside for the bodies that's where the camera stayed focused, not on the real problem inside.

That hospital has always been poorly managed, as long as I have known of it, although its rating in the national rating system for NHS hospitals is 'good'. I have older relatives who have to go there more frequently than I do, and I know of lots of lost referrals, missed communications between specialist departments and people's GPs, and constantly re-scheduled appointments. All this from the time before the pandemic.

The hospital did have hand sanitizing stations at least.

Waiting on the tree trimming swine. Need climbers not a bucket trucks. Six good sized trees in a tough spot. No problem, the company that just did some work for a neighbor did great work so after taking other estimates hired them. Problem isn't the crew or the quality of their work.

Last Friday they were supposed to come and it snowed. I didn't expect them and just figure I'd get a call later in the evening to set up a new appointment. I was leaving for errands 5 hours after they were supposed to show when three bucket trucks arrived unannounced. The owner decided that since he had paid them for the day he was going to get work out of them so he sent them over. I asked their foreman; had I not been home they would've just driven across my lawn to do the work with the trucks destroying it in the process. Or maybe my septic system had they gone around back. The owner came up with lame excuses and was lying through his gold filled teeth to me. He figured he could still send his guys back to fill and seed and repair my lawn and still get the job done, despite having hired him for the express purpose of avoiding all that.

I want the work done and their crew is definitely good, plus he has the correct insurance. Gave him another shot at it. So I sit and wait for them to come today. Will they just do it or will there be some other nonsense?

Job done, all good but I can say this: being voluble is not really a value added service to a small business owner.
Also, feel free to take and use this phrase that I have used many, many times.:

"All you had to do was what you said you would do and there would be no problem"
