Battlestar Galactica

Tonight I start with the 2003 miniseries. If I like it, I will continue to the 2004-2009 series. They are available for free on the Peacock Network. From the feedback I've read, it's supposed to be rather good.

Up until now, I have only watched occasional episodes from either the reboot or the 1978 original series. It was hard to get into them because each version is an interconnected series, and I didn't manage to catch either one when they began.

That's one thing I love about streaming: you're not dependent on being in front of a scene at an exact time.

Any Battlestar Galactica fans in the forum?

The 2004 - 2009 series was/is amazing and so well done, they hold back no punches even in the 1.5 hour final episode of the series which was brilliantly written and played out...I may watch some key episodes of the series again...

Watching this show reminds of when the Sci-Fi (not SyFy) channel used to have original programming. Looking at their present prime time schedule, it's mostly movies that you could watch many other places. They don't seem to be trying anymore.

The shadow

The shadow knows!
I own the box set 1978 (24 episodes)
1980 (10 episodes)
A guilty pleasure for me.

So far so good.

I'm impressed with the effort put into making the technology seem realistic. It's obviously fictional, but it somehow seems more feasible than that of just about any other Sci-Fi franchise.

Star Wars and Stargate both have a touch of magic about them. Their actual technology is utterly opaque. Star Trek is, of course, science oriented. There are a lot of references to their technology, but it's so much more advanced than the present world, that it mostly sounds like technobabble. As for Babylon 5, the technology of the humans is somewhat realistic. But then there are several aliens species who are so advanced that their technology is almost entirely obscure.

Interestingly, among all the series mentioned above, Battlestar Galactica is the only one without alien aliens, as far as I know. The Cylons have become rather alien, but they were originated by humans.

Another good thing about Battlestar Galactica so far is that the characters come across as real people, with jealousies, affections, resentments, ambitions, etc.

Good acting, good production values, and an engaging plot.

It needed some editing in the middle but hang in there, the ending was pretty good.
Like Star Wars it's cool to see advanced tech looking used and worn and totally commonplace.

I watched the mini-series again last night and tonight I watched the first 2 episodes of season 4...As @pigfarmer said, the ending is pretty good, I think it was brilliant and want to see it again however I dont want to jump right to it...So I'll take my time watching the 4th season through...

There's also some movies that were made after the series finished like this one:

A notable feature of BSG tech is the absence of force fields. Another is the use of missiles in lieu of lasers or some other type of "ray gun".

Better special effects. The spacecraft and combat scenes seem realistic.

Lorne Greene saying forcefully 'positive shield NOW' is cool but wasn't a force field, it looks like they're just closing the shutter over the big window. Probably a good idea, don't wanna get sucked out the hole into the vacuum of space. 'Shut the damned window NOW' wouldn't have the same dramatic effect (unless it was your mother was yelling that at you). I have the old box set with the chrome Cylon head case. Even in the original when Galactica is going toe to toe with a Base Star and Adama orders missiles the special effects department just put in cheap-o laser light looking streaks. In Galactica 1980 they did employ a shield to stop a nuclear exchange on Terra but I think that was more a plot device to help that cinematic tour de force along.

On the old tube TVs 'watch it as it aired' we never minded. The local Best Buy used to put out a 27" color console model in perfect shape and then plunk a HD flatscreen on top of it showing the same thing. Oh my. But like the transition from analog to digital something gets lost in translation. Our imaginations did the heavy lifting for the special effects dept.

Battlestar ( the old tv series version ) is awesome in Blu Ray. I liked Sheba the best ( in real life June Lockhart's daughter ).
