But the soda companies need to use more recycled plastic to help promote recycling but they don't right now...

They don't even put sugar in their soda anymore, it's high fructose corn syrup they us as a sweetener

Sorry for being such an ass. But thats the same thing as sugar. just a clever way of not writing sugar on the label.

It's not the same as sugar, it's not even sugar but a liquid sweetener made from corn using mercury filters, so there are trace amounts of mercury in your soda...

I'm a coca cola addict. I used to drink 16-24 cans a day. I stopped cold turkey, about 25 years ago. I only drank water, juice or milk for all those years. Now, 25 years later, I'll buy a 12 pack at Christmas time, I find that I like to drink 3 cans, one right after another. When it's finished, I don't buy any more. It's weird but, I only like it in the cans. Bottled coke goes flat to easily.

Those plastic rings that they use for six packs have really caused some damage to wildlife. I always cut them into little pieces before I toss them.

Someone came up with a brilliant idea, I hope it works.

I don't have a problem with barges. Are you implying I'm a barge hater?

Well, you were stating facts in an accusatory way.

A more correct version of:
"They would have to load it onto barges, tow it to land and it would fill an entire landfill which cost millions to construct."

Is:
"They could load it onto barges, tow it to land, and use high temperature incineration to turn it into lots of clean environmentally friendly power."

The plant would generate a lot of CO2 which is environmentally friendly.

As a side note: because of the prozac in the water, fish are less depressed than they used to be.

450 years

Thats how long it takes ... Well, must be a guestimate, no PETs around 1600 A.D Im aware of

There are thousands of tons in the ocean gyres, according to scientists who went looking for it, where there should be millions of tons.

We'll assume it took 20 years to reduce it by a factor of 1000 to make the half life calculation easy (this is an absurd assumption since we are dumping millions of tons a year which means there is a constant input)

For 20 years (which is way to long) the half life is about 2 years or about 3.2 years average lifetime.

So if we are more realistic plastic in the ocean has a half life of less than a year, and an average lifetime less than 1.6 years. And it easily could be half that.

And remember only the ocean PET counts (the stuff that got away) since we can high temperature incinerate land based PET waste or recycle it.

1.6 years for a bottle to decompose 100 % ?
Just no.

Thousands of tons only ? You are swinging numbers around without any solid proof.

Huh?

I like being challenged on my facts and welcome opportunities to prove, yet again, that I was right.

I have been wrong once or twice to my sorrow and appreciate the checking, since unlike progressives, I don't deliberately misinform people.

Thank you.

Ocean Garbage Patch Is Mysteriously Disappearing
Plastic debris in the open ocean

The estimates of plastic in the ocean are in 10s of thousands of tons.

From the OP and the OP article:

“Current science shows that plastics cannot be usefully assimilated into the food chain.
...

Between 5m and 13m tonnes of plastic leaks into the world’s oceans each year to be ingested by sea birds, fish and other organisms, and by 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish, according to research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

These two statements are both lies.

Ocean Garbage Patch Is Mysteriously Disappearing
Newly-evolved microbes may be breaking down ocean plastics
1. If bacteria are eating the plastic, the claim that plastics are not "usefully assimilated into the food chain" is a damned lie. Otherwise there would be a brownish foam of dead bacteria on the surface of the ocean.

2. The OP claims that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish. We will assume that 10 million tons has been dropped in the ocean since 1987 for simplicity. We will multiply 10 million tons by roughly 63 years and presto 630 million tons.

https://phys.org/news/2009-01-first-ever-worldwide-fish-biomass-impact.html
3. 0.8 to 2 billion tonnes of fish.

So the claim that plastic will outweigh fish is also a lie even assuming zero plastic degradation.

4. Lets take the mean of 10 million tons of plastic in the ocean every year. Assume we have been tossing it in for 30 years (it has been longer), and assume a 50 year half-life. 66% of year 1 garbage would still be around.

30 x 10 million is 300 million tons. Over 80% should still be out there since only 1.4% of the year 30 garbage has disappeared and 81.2% of the year 15 garbage is out there.

That is 240 million tons. The estimates from my articles is that there is somewhere around 30 thousand tons in the open ocean. This is 10,000 times less than claimed by the OP.

5. Finally: the rate of degradation is positively related to the surface to volume ratio. If the plastics are micro particles, as claimed for why we can't find them, this means the degradation by sunlight or bacteria is almost complete.

How do you explain the plastic duckies still washing up on shores .. They sailed world wide since their release in 1992

They should be long gone by now if your above calculations were reflecting reality

There isn't a lot of plastic in the gyres. There used to be a lot.

That's not my opinion, that's science.

There is nothing to worry about they said, it´s all going to be ok they said..View attachment 849 View attachment 850 View attachment 851

I'm not a fan of seagulls.

If they are eating the plastic and bringing it back to land I view that as a win/win.

You are partially right. It depends on the temperature in the oceans how fast the plastic will degrade into micro particles

Plastic Breaks Down in Ocean, After All -- And Fast

The result is a toxic slurry full of poisonous particles.

Why Doesn't Plastic Biodegrade?

Kind of.

Biphenyl's primary use is as an antifungal agent. So the fish will get less fungal and mold infections. Could be win/win.

"Toxic" always raises the question of "to which organisms is it toxic".

Just as a followup:

If you give chocolate to your dog it is toxic.

If you give chocolate to your girlfriend it has health and social benefits.
