Super Bowl LV

The 2021 NFL Playoffs are headed into the championship round and Super Bowl LV is not too far away. The 55th installment of the NFL's current version of the championship game is scheduled to be played on February 7, 2021 in Tampa, Florida, the second consecutive year the game will be held in the Sunshine State.

Raymond James Stadium will host its third Super Bowl, and first in 12 years, when it plays host to the league's championship game. This will be the fourth time in league history the Super Bowl will take place in the same state in back-to-back years, and the first time since 2009 and 2010, when Florida hosted the Super Bowl in consecutive years.

Animals Across America Provide Predictions for Super Bowl Winner

As has become custom in the days leading up to the Super Bowl, a veritable menagerie of animals residing at zoos and sanctuaries across the country have stepped or swum forward to predict the winner of Sunday's big game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While corralling every creature that has offered a forecast is a task that even Noah would find daunting, a survey of the most prominent predictions to have made the news so far would seem to give KC's Patrick Mahomes a very slight edge over Tom Brady and the Bucs.

Backing the Chiefs on Sunday are three creatures out of Texas: Savannah the elephant from the El Paso Zoo, Bubbles the hippo from the Fort Worth Zoo, and Carlton the sloth from Moody Gardens in Galveston. Additionally, Dash the tiger cub from the Wildcat Sanctuary in Minnesota, Nick the dolphin from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, and a white squirrel named Pisgah Pete in North Carolina have also thrown their lot behind Kansas City. And, perhaps more noteworthy of all, Duchess from Tiger King star Carole Baskin's Big Cat Rescue also weighed in with a nod towards Mahomes and company.

Meanwhile, Gambit the seal from the Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina, Mari the elephant from the Honolulu Zoo in Hawaii, Sid the wolverine from ZooMontana, and Shani the Honeybadger from the Naples Zoo in Florida all predicted a win for Tampa Bay. Additionally, in the 'celebrity animal' department, the beloved hippo Fiona from the Cincinnati Zoo lent her star power to Tom Brady's team by prognosticating in their favor. Although this cursory count appears to put the Chiefs ahead of the Buccaneers, one may wish to wait before they wager, since additional predictions will undoubtedly be revealed in the days to come from various local television stations around the country, making this year's game something of a toss-up.

Super Bowl fever sweeps Tampa! Football fans defy mask mandate and pack into crowded bars and restaurants on the eve of the big game

As football fans crowded Tampa on Saturday with hours to go until Super Bowl LV, hundreds were without maks in areas where the mayor has issued a mandate to curb the spread of COVID-19. As night fell, bars and restaurants were crammed with maskless partygoers and a tailgating party began outside of Raymond James Stadium as fans began the celebrations with less than 24 hours until the game. RVs and trucks were seen setting up ahead of Super Bowl LV in footage posted to social media. Earlier in the night, a firework show with a pirate theme launched the party with hundreds crowded onto the riverwalk or on boats to watch.

Super Bowl streaker says he bet $50,000 on his stunt, but his plan is falling apart because he couldn't keep his mouth shut

With just over five minutes remaining in Super Bowl LV, a fan ran onto the field, briefly disrupting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' march to victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Later identified as Yuri Andrade, the fan had a pretty successful run as far as streakers go. He made it onto the field, got some photos taken of himself in a hot pink one-piece emblazoned with the name of an adult website, and evaded security long enough to interrupt the game. He even got a fantastic call from legendary play-by-play man Kevin Harlan, who was broadcasting the game over the radio.

But after his stunt, viral reports began coming out that Andrade's run had been even more successful than initially thought. Not only had Andrade made it onto the field, but he also claimed to have done so after placing a $50,000 wager that the Super Bowl would have a streaker, thus cashing in for $374,000 in winnings.

Andrade's claim immediately raised eyebrows in the betting community. As Patrick Everson of Covers.com noted on Twitter, offshore sportsbooks likely would have had limits in place to prevent such a bet from being made.

Todd Furhman of the "Bet the Board" podcast also had questions about Andrade's wager, as he had initially told TMZ Sports that he sent someone to Las Vegas to make the wager. Since placing bets on off-field events isn't allowed at Vegas sportsbooks, the story felt immediately phony.

But despite initial suspicions, it appears that there was some truth to Andrade's claim, though he still won't be cashing in on his run.

Andrade told a Tampa radio station that he had gotten friends to place wagers from different accounts on the gambling site Bovada, betting that there would be a fan on the field at +750 odds. By making several smaller wagers rather than one big $50,000, it's more conceivable that Andrade could have gotten a healthy wager down on his run.

According to a report from A.J. Perez at Front Office Sports, Bovada was working to identify accounts that knew of Andrade's planned stunt.

"Our players have always trusted us to ensure the integrity of all props offered in our sportsbook," a Bovada spokesman told Perez. "We will continue to make sure that any publicity stunts or ill-intended behavior cannot adversely affect the outcome of a player's wager."

According to Perez, Bovada is refunding those that wagered there would not be a fan on the field during the game and paying out winning bets for accounts that were not linked to early knowledge of Andrade's plan. Perez wrote that one bettor who said he had no prior knowledge of the stunt had already had his account shut down by Bovada.

Ultimately, it looks as though Andrade's plan to bet on himself won't end up in the big payday that he had hoped for, but it appears he came closer to success than many initially suspected.
