Wars & Rumours of Wars

Little bit off the current hot topic, but still quite fresh:

Addition:

Actually this dove tails into what Jullian Asagne was saying. War is just a money laundering opportunity to flush out wast amounts of tax payers money. It was the same during Vietnam war.

Look at how much brand new Afghan military equipment, from US manufacturers, was given up to the Taliban when the US withdrew. Billions upon billions of dollars worth. More than the Afghan military knew what to do with, whose members were typically too illiterate to operate the more complex items in their inventory. The vast operation to train the Afghan military over two decades was also clearly a bogus farce, as they folded within one week against a numerically inferior and less-well-equipped foe. There is the whiff of corruption from the sale of all of that equipment, and no doubt consultancy fees paid to 'train' the Afghan military.

Snipers don't use red dots. That would be idiotic because one would advertise where he's shooting from. Additionally, bullets don't fly in straight line but follow parabolic curve bot vertically and horizontally, so laser dot would be useless as an aid. Idea of snipers using red dots only comes from Hollywood movies. Totally fake ...
Not to mention that a red laser dot cannot be seen in telescopic sights at the typical ranges that snipers engage their targets, even it was an accurate reference.

Furthermore, it is not clear how you could ever get a cat to direct to the source of a laser beam hundreds of yards away.

A sniper team might use a laser range finder, but the beam is infrared, and cannot be seen by either human or feline eyes.

Yeah, that was quite a generous reparation package given to the Taliban, I guess for all the grief and trouble we caused them over the last twenty years...

Finland has one of Europe's largest artilleries, 280,000 wartime troops and 'superb' Russian-military intelligence gathering

Finland has one of Europe's largest reserve armies and its biggest collection of artillery, while Sweden has some of the quietest and deadliest submarines in the world - all of which will be at NATO's disposal when the two countries join the alliance, which is expected to happen in the coming months. Finland also has a legendary ability to gather intelligence on Russia's troop movements and many Russian-speaking spies in its ranks, while Stockholm helped produce the NLAW anti-tank rocket that has wreaked such havoc with Putin's armour further to the south. It means that, whatever happens in Ukraine, the Russian despot's aim of weakening NATO and keeping the alliance away from his border has completely backfired.

Ukraine's success against Russia seems in large part down to their use of artillery, and they have inflicted some major defeats on Russia by decimating their forces with artillery bombardment.

I don't think its anything to do with artillery.

Ukrainians have exactly same old Soviet artillery pieces as Russians, so one side shouldn't be any better then other. Its simply a survivor bias. If Ukrainians have a really nice drone video of a direct hit they'll post it on social media, so then by watching social media one gets impression that Ukrainian artillery always hits bull's eye. But Russians are mostly blocked from main social media, so one will not see Russian side videos and conclude that Russians never use artillery.

Here is a really good video of Ukrainian artillery attacking Russian trenches. One can simply just count number of misses and see that barely 1 in 20 shells came close to the trench. One needs to click on view button:

The real Ukrainian advantage are those anti-tank missiles. Early on there was a video of Ukrainian squad in which practically each soldier, with exception of the machine-gunner, had either German RPG, or MLAW or Javelin. All 10 of them. These MLAW's totally obliterated Russian advantage in armoured vehicles. That's why there are so many photos of Russian tanks with their turrets blown off. That's why Russians gave up on encircling Kiev. And that's why British intelligence report that Russians lost 1/3 of their initial soldiers ring very true.

Yeah, there is definitely a noticeable encouragement and increase of UFO positive news coming from historically sceptical US government. Some influencers are going as far as to apologise to ufologists. I'm just wandering and wandering is it possibly maybe that US gov. wants slowly to make 180 deg turn and declare piece on Russia and China, since whole planet needs to stands together against, you know, them nasty aliens.

Things are currently totally out of the wack: commodity prices are through the roof, inflation is soaring, supply chains are disrupted, there is new pandemic on a horizon, stock market is flushing down, there is a looming global food crisis ( in a time when food crisis is almost forgotten idea ), China wants to withdraw billions of its currency reserves, etc. What is the magic wand that can stop this downward spiral?

It happened before, on the end of the Cold War I, it might happen again to end the Cold War II ... And to make U-turn of the currently very strong public opinion favouring confrontation, so close to the brink of WWIII, one really needs a very big scarecrow, where aliens fit the bill perfectly.

God bless aliens. Hallelujah ...

Yes there are many Nazis in Ukraine's military and civilian population, western support for them must be pointed out because western actions in Ukrainian territory led in part to this war...

...

Can anyone explain to me why this was called evacuation and not surrender?

(Excerpt)

Almost nobody, in education, politics or journalism, knows about the nasty, racist roots of Ukrainian nationalism, the horrible history of the vicious Stepan Bandera (now a Ukrainian national hero), or the Kiev state’s discriminatory scorn for the Russian language. If Canada treated its French speakers as Ukraine treats its Russian speakers, there would be international outrage.

Worst of all is the widespread ignorance of the fact that President Volodymyr Zelensky, in my view an admirable man, was elected on a programme of peace with Russia. But when he tried to do as he had promised, he was blocked by parts of his own army, who publicly confronted him and humiliated him.

At the same time his political rivals, including the neo-Nazis who very definitely do exist in Ukraine, went on the streets to denounce any sort of deal. President Zelensky crumbled. And the war came.

I have mentioned here before that the first act of violence in this war was actually the Western-backed mob putsch which overthrew Ukraine’s lawful government in 2014.

This was the true beginning of all the horror. And while it does not excuse the idiotic and brutal Putin invasion, it very much helps to explain it.

Look, I respect those who take Ukraine’s side in this war. They have a valid point of view which I happen not to share. But what I object to is the wholly one-sided nature of public opinion here. It is so bad that it is a positive disadvantage to know anything about the subject.

And it reached its peak last week when the Ukrainian defenders of the Mariupol steelworks, many of them in fact the neo-Nazis of the Azov battalion who proudly wear SS emblems on their official uniforms, surrendered.

The UK media coverage of this event strove mightily not to mention the neo-Nazis and to avoid using the word ‘surrender’.

The Mariupol garrison was said instead to have been ‘evacuated’ into Russian-held territory. Pictures showed them disarmed and being frisked by Russian soldiers. But we are so much in the grip of a one-sided view of this conflict that we could not even admit they had capitulated.

Refusal to accept such obvious reality is a sign of madness.

Fifty experts from Syrian military who specialise in deadly barrel bombs that destroy anything within 800ft radius are drafted in to aid Russian forces in Ukraine invasion

The bombs have been used to devastating effect in the 10-year Syrian civil war, with evidence suggesting that Bashar al-Assad's forces using them to kill thousands of civilians and destroy vast swathes of towns and cities. According to The Guardian , intelligence officers have said more than 50 experts in the creation and deployment of crude explosives travelled to Russia weeks ago to work along-side officials in Moscow's armies. It is understood that the arrival of the specialists was one of the main reasons behind both the United States and European countries warning that chemical weapons could be used in the conflict in Ukraine. Barrel bombs are drums packed with crude explosives and shrapnel, which are dropped from a helicopter. The bombs typically weigh anywhere between 300kg to 600kg and, despite their DIY nature, can destroy everything in a 800ft radius. As well as explosives, al-Assad's regime was also accused of filling canisters with deadly chemicals, such as chlorine, and dropping them on towns and cities. Pictured: The aftermath of alleged barrel bomb attacks during the Syrian civil war.

What does it matter weather 500 kg that is dropped on you is smart or dumb?

It is funny in a twisted way that guys who stuff barrels with explosives are called "experts". I guess if one is to stuff barrels with fish he wouldn't be an "expert".

General Mark Milley warns cadets graduating from West Point to prepare for a global war between superpowers fighting with robotic tanks, ships and planes as brutal Ukraine war continues

Screenshot_20220522-145609.jpg

During his address, General Mark Milley, chairman of the Army's Joint Chiefs of Staff, told graduates to prepare for the brewing conflict - which he said will change the way wars are fought. The US, he said, can no longer sit idle as a military powerhouse, as the two nations continue to show both growth a desire for global conquest - Russia with its aggression in Ukraine, and China with its recent economic and military growth. Drawing parallels with technology seen in Russia's invasion, Milley warned that future wars will be even more complex, with unseen enemies and sophisticated warfare that will see a need for new weapons and strategies from US Armed Forces. 'Right now, at this very moment, a fundamental change is happening in the very character of war,' Milley, a veteran of both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, said.

No doubt the Ukrainians are getting lots of use out of the anti-tank missile systems they have been given by the west. A lot of the videos online of Russian tanks being destroyed, particularly where the videos are of a hand-held device with a screen showing the strike in black-and-white, are of the Ukrainians' own Stugna-P guided missile. And there are of course the Turkish Bayraktar drones. However, I think more Russian vehicles and troops have probably been lost to artillery than missiles.

The infamous failed Donets river crossing was thwarted mainly by artillery bombardment beyond line-of-sight. When the Russians attempted a pontoon crossing of the Irpin river, during the battle for Kiev, Ukrainian spokesman Oleksiy Arestovych said that they (the Ukrainians) "covered them, continuously covered them," with artillery, making that attempt fail. These are just a couple of examples. One thing that is different about the use of artillery in this conflict is that cheap commercial-grade drones have replaced the artillery forward observer, enabling artillery crews to get much better information about where their shells are landing without having to rely upon radio communications, or putting the observer near to enemy lines.

yeah, that only shows how purely coordinated Russian troupes are. Artillery unit is relatively large target easy to find and suppress with another artillery unit, rocket fire and aviation. Russians do these crossing without any cover, like kamikaze.

One amazing thing on the new south-eastern front is that it had been a month without front line moving at all. Wherever there is a river Russians can't cross. And that whole area is criss-crossed with rivers.

I saw this Ukrainian river map the other day. Ukraine has obviously destroyed many of the bridges near the front lines. The Russians have destroyed some of them as well in areas where they have been retreating.

Nice map. Great predictive ability.

Yeah, its very hard to cross the river while somebody is bombarding you. Apparently, recently, a whole Russian brigade was lost trying to cross one river. Russians might need Jean of Arc to rise their spirits.

Another big change is that Ukraine now has 700,000 men at arms. Practically Ukraine is fully mobilised, while Russia is still only fighting with professional core of the army or around 150,000. Ukraine is no more the weaker side. This more and more looks like Vietnam war.
