I don't understand the anger

Sheltie

Fratty and out of touch.
My neighbors, a married couple two doors down, are liberal democrats. They still have a Clinton sign in their front yard (no lie). They're originally from Northern Virginia, which is a suburb of Washington DC. It's a high-income region dominated by liberal politics, not unlike San Francisco.

Yet, despite all of this, they both have a great sense of humor and I get along with them very well. I don't mind their liberal posts on FB and I respect their views.

I know so many other people, however, who seem to have personalized politics and they're constantly calling other people names.

I'm becoming much more pragmatic as I grow older. The way I see it, the stock market just had one of its best years ever and unemployment is way down. Anyone who doesn't like Trump can work to replace him three years from now. I just don't understand the anger.

Th problem is instant gratification and social media. People have forgotten how to disagree respectfully. In a lot of cases. people present their thesis. To them, it is a well constructed flawless piece of intellectual property. so when someone comes along and disagrees, they take that as personal intellectual criticism or an attack on their character. In short, people have lost their flipping minds.

Dundee

Fading day by day.
I can say that I am 55, and here in Australia, we have 2 major parties, Liberal and Labor. And as much as I like to hate Liberal Pollys, it is more about their personalities than anything else. For all the bluster, for all the number they throw at us. If I am honest, in my whole life I have seen very little effect on my way of life whoever is in. Other than Howards gun laws, medicare I guess...
Nothing much changes that I notice who ever is in. Not really.
The only one I am a little passionate about is i am anti the Green Party. That sounds weird I guess but I am pretty much a pacifist, believe in conservation, all the things a good Green believes in. However what I find is perhaps more at a community level, the Greens won't share. To give you an example. In my home town we have a nearby patch of bush. As a kid, my generation and those before me played in that bush. We camped, rode pushbikes, motor bikes, had party's. Never hurt a fly. Now I go up there and there is two flash houses owned by Greenies, who are politically active near the outskirts. Now you wander through the bush that I grew up in and we see...
No camping, No fires, No Dogs off the leash, no Motorbikes, No Horses, No four wheel drives, significant roadside vegetation...and more.
It has effectively become unusable for kids, and most others. All because of a couple of greenies who were able to influence local council. And very very often they are people from the big cities, who shift out here. They buy a pair of moleskin pants, an Akubra Hat and 3 alpacas and suddenly think they are country people. It really shits me. This is very very common here in Australia now. The greenies are passionate, and wont share. Our kids need to play, go camping, ride motorbikes horses, all the things we did as kids. But increasingly all the places we did that as kids that are even remotely close to towns (accessible by kids) have had this happen. Then they are the first to complain that the kids are in town and up to mischief.
If the Greens grabbed a section of bush and put up there signs, but recognized there are others in the community and allocated areas for all the rest of us to use. I would vote Green in a heartbeat. Till then, I vote anti Greens.

There are a lot of nice people that are mentally dim and like sheep follow the herd.

As in animal farm ("four legs good, two legs better") the sheep in DC have all been taught that progressivism and globalism makes sense.

Anyone with a lick of sense and more than two brain cells knows better.

But there are an lot of nice people who are "one cellers" who supported Hillary. They are fine unless you praise Trump or damn Hillary ("Satan's hand puppet"). Then they attack like rabid badgers.

Don't know how to cure the situation. Education doesn't seem to make people smarter, it just makes them more confident in, and defensive of, their stupidity.

Yeah this I've noticed, being educated doesn't necessarily mean the knowledge was understood or digested, it could mean there is heartburn or indigestion involved, perhaps regurgitation, and if that's the case then we have some who are glorifying their 'illnesses'...

The greenies sound a lot like what we call hipsters here in the US. They're a bunch of self-righteous brats who come from big cities and expect the local powers that be to be beholden to them. Like you, Dundee, I also agree with most of the things the hipsters stand for but they're just so self-absorbed and annoying that it's hard to like them.
