Hurricane Harvey could slam east Texas with up to two feet of rain.
Rapidly strengthening Harvey forecast to slam East Texas as major hurricane
Tropical Storm Harvey is rapidly intensifying in the central Gulf of Mexico and is predicted to plow into east Texas as a very serious hurricane late Friday.

An incredible amount of rain, exceeding 20 inches in some areas, is likely as the storm is predicted to stall and unload torrential downpours for four straight days.

“Trying not to be dramatic, but I fear epic flood catastrophe,” tweeted Marshall Shepherd, a former president of the American Meteorological Society.

Not only are the rain and flooding concerns huge, but the storm also has the potential to generate destructive winds and a devastating storm surge — or raise the water above normally dry land at the coast.

Forty five percent of oil refining is done along the Gulf Coast. The whole country could be hit with higher gas prices due to the hurricane.
Oil production shutting down due to Hurricane Harvey
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Forty-five percent of total U.S. petroleum refining capacity is located along the Gulf Coast. According to reports, about one-third of that is in the path of Hurricane Harvey.

  • ExxonMobil is in the process of evacuating all personnel from their facilities expected to be in the path of the storm, which includes the Hoover platform and Galveston 209 platform. The Hoover and Galveston 209 platforms are shut-in. Their Hadrian South subsea production system in the Gulf of Mexico is also shut-in.

That storm is very slow moving, Texas is going to get a huge amount of rain, at least it's going in to land on a low tide...

Harvey is now a category four hurricane with 130 mph wind speeds.
geez... I would so dislike to have to be driving in that especially trying to drag a mobile home van through floodwaters...

The photos from past hurricanes are rather interesting. What stands out quite glaringly, and I guess compared to what people are going through at the moment is a mote point, but how much slimmer people were in the 1950s and 1960s that they are today...

Texas braces for FIVE FEET of rain and 'life-threatening floods' as monster Hurricane Harvey batters Lone Star state leaving 300,000 without power and destroying hundreds of homes and businesses

Texas has been left reeling by Harvey after the monstrous storm slammed into the state Friday evening as a Category Four hurricane, bringing 130mph winds and the threat of catastrophic flooding throughout the weekend.

Eight million residents have been warned the worst is yet to come, as hundreds of thousands of shell-shocked Texans on the Gulf Coast began to pick up the pieces after Harvey destroyed homes and businesses, left several injured and the state facing a clean-up bill of $40billion.

Texas utility companies said more than 300,000 were without power and the seaside town of Rockport, 30 miles north of Corpus Christi was hardest hit as the storm - which has weakened to a Category One with winds of 75mph - settled over southeast Texas.

It will sit over the Lone Star State well into next week pounding hundreds of miles of coastline with life-threatening storm surges, causing deadly walls of water to move inland. With streets flooded and strewn with power lines and debris, authorities warned the storm's most destructive powers were just beginning.

Rainfall that will continue for days could dump more than FIVE FEET of water and inundate many communities, including dangerously flood-prone Houston, the nation's fourth-largest city.

No deaths have been immediately reported, however, high winds have kept emergency crews out of many places, and authorities said it could be hours before emergency teams are able to fully assess damage.

Gas prices nationwide will increase on the 28th because of Harvey.
Hurricane Harvey likely to boost gas prices for US drivers
  • Hurricane Harvey is expected to hit a refinery-rich stretch of the Gulf Coast and U.S. drivers could soon see the impact at the gas pump.
  • Some refineries are expected to shut down until the storm passes, possibly disrupting gasoline supplies.
  • That Gulf storm in August 2005 caused about a 40-cent increase overnight, but we might not know the full impact of Harvey until Monday.
