A million plastic bottles a minute

One of the less attractive things about Myanamar is the readiness of many of the locals to throw whatever waste they have over the side of a boat, out of the bus or train window, onto a wind-blown pile at the edge of their village, even straight off the side of their hilltop monastery into the otherwise pristine Andaman Sea.

These days litter, mainly plastic litter, is a big problem. It’s not everywhere, don’t get that impression but it’s never far away. Some places are piled high with it, some literally awash with it. Some people live amongst it, some kids play in it. It hangs like prayer flags from some fences and plants. Some rivers, streams and storm drains are clogged with it, waiting only for the rains to to wash it into a bigger river and eventually out into the sea.

I'm upsetting my local superstore by reusing their plastic bags many times over to carry food home..

Infact, I was questioned once,, why I refused to buy one, lol

:stop:Stop...you have to buy the plastic bags used at the grocery store?...

That is unheard of here, they give them away, double or triple bagging, they use plastic bags here like there is an endless supply (well there is I suppose)...

Wow, that's 30 cents USD each...We would have a revolution over here if the grocery stores started charging that price for a bag lol...

We have both, self serve check-outs and people stationed check-outs...

Pls make joke from 21st century show

There aren't many good ones.

Tonto and the Lone Ranger were trapped on a rocky ridge.

As they peered around the rocks they saw a horde of Comanches were closing in.

The Lone Ranger turned to his faithful companion and said:

"We are surrounded with no escape, we are almost out of ammo, and they are closing in. Looks like the end of
the trail for us, Tonto."

"What you mean 'us'... white man?"

Got a reusable 5 gallon drum of water and no longer use water bottles, even for recycling - instead pour into portable double haul metal cans.

Got some heavy duty reusable grocery bags in my trunk, no more plastic bags.

I do my part, conscience is clear.

I forget to take my reusable grocery bags with me sometimes so sometimes I get the plastic bags which in turn I use them for liners for my bathroom trash bin...

Same. I literally just went for groceries and even talking about it I left the bags in the trunk. Not sure how to solve this. Maybe routine.

Discovered a new subreddit worthy of mentioning here.

Live With A Lower Impact • r/ZeroWaste

Being "zero waste" means that we adopt steps towards reducing personal waste and minimizing environmental impact. The zero waste ideal is to send nothing to landfills or high-temperature incineration facilities and to prevent unnecessary pollution and the squandering of nonrenewable resources.

This community is for those who are interested in living a lower impact lifestyle, with a major focus on the "5 R's": refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot. We follow this by reducing consumption, choosing reusable and sustainably-produced goods, promoting recycling and composting, and encouraging each other in our attempts to live more sustainably.
