A 6.4 earthquake struck Erromago, in Vanuatu archipelago . The article said it was at a depth of 200 kilometers or 124 miles.

Metanoia
Been a few quakes seems like the Pacific Rim has been quite active lately. Even Tasmania had 2 small tremors on King Island and Ulverstone plus 2 quakes in New Zealand.

Does this make that 4 major earthquakes in the last 48 hours?...

I think major would be magnitude 7 or greater......a 6.4 off Vanuatu and a 6.2 off Japan are fairly commonplace.

In 2011 there was this person who was so upset about a 6.1 magnitude quake off Vanuatu because they'd never heard of any quakes there before. When I asked them when they first heard of Vanuatu they said when they read the article.

Both places are along an active subduction zone.....such events are more common than most places.

7.1, 6.4 are not as bad as 8 or 9+ quakes.
Gut me California may get a nasty one of those calibers before long.
Think of what a 9.8 would do to that state...

California could be hit by an 8.2 mega-earthquake, and it would be catastrophic

At least in Southern California they don't have to worry a tsunami. A magnitude 8.5 off the Pacific Northwest would be far worse.

But some of the largest quakes that were magnitude 8+ were in the Midwest along the New Madrid Seismic Zone. A magnitude 8.5 there would take out Memphis and Saint Louis and everything in between. Everyone in the Midwest would be affected.

I remember reading somewhere that Midwest 8+ earthquake is overdue to happen...

Some people say that......but is really hard to say because of the limited amount of data or even how long they've been occurring. I do think it should happen in the next few hundred years. Its one of the several major disasters people in the US should be ready for.

Yes, the strongest recorded US earthquake, excluding Alaskan quakes, was the 1812 New Madrid, Missouri quake. They say the Midwest is overdue but it seems like everywhere is overdue for something. We keep hearing how Yellowstone is overdue for a volcanic eruption, for instance. It seems like stuff like this usually happens when and where you least expect it.

Thanks for the link.....looks like good info.

Yes places like the New Madrid area, Southern California and the Pacific Northwest should be prepared for major earthquakes. But the southern California area is going to the be least severe of the three areas.

Right now its hard to say Yellowstone is overdue as its timing for major eruptions is hardly precisely equal.

I agree about when things happen.....that's why everyone should have an idea of what they'd do if any of these four things were to occur.

People in the eastern US should also be aware that a mega-tsunami is in their near geologic future.

I'm about 300 miles inland and 900 ft above sea level, I think I'm safe from a mega-tsunami...:)
