The Divided State of Europe

No deal is better than a bad deal.

When did this have a change of meaning for the lady who advocated it
This slogan was never true to begin with. It was a dumb negotiating ploy by May. It is foolish to hold her to it. It is as stupid as holding Boris Johnson to his "£350 million a week to the NHS" claim.

May hints she WILL have one last attempt to pass her deal next week after Tory 'Spartans' scuppered her victory... but if it's rejected she could call a third UK election in just four years

$

Minutes after her deal was rejected, the Prime Minister (left) hinted that she may have yet another attempt at pushing her withdrawal deal through the Commons next week (bottom right, how MPs voted it down for a third time). But her fourth attempt can only come after rebel MPs hold a second round of indicative votes on alternatives to her deal on Monday.

It is thought speaker John Bercow will only hold votes on the options that were closest to passing, including staying in the customs union or holding a second referendum. That could precipitate a general election as Mrs May has warned she would not accept a soft Brexit that contradicts the party’s manifesto commitments on leaving single market and customs union.

The news comes after the European Commission said a 'no-deal' scenario on April 12 was now 'likely'. Earlier this evening, hundreds of protesters took to the streets near Parliament (top right) on the day Britain should have left the EU.

Furious Theresa May blasts John Bercow for wrecking her Brexit withdrawal agreement by blocking all amendments before MPs rejected it for a third time.

One was a lie to persuade for the leave campaign , using money as the tool.

The other is plain common sense when dealing with sharp minded bureaucrats batting for the same team. For this phrase there is not a deal where it doesn't hold precedent.

I will not be fudged by squabbling, the whole house should be shot for putting party line before people and self during such a time. Shameful display we have witnessed.

Nuts and bolts.

Liberals should start to realise that if the rich get richer then they will too reap what has been sown and understand the self harm they cause by focusing on the gap. They are prepared to see the poor become poorer, just as long as the cream is watered down from the top.

I am low end and see it for what it is.....Emotional.

It is a disgrace they are not following the will of the people, many British citizens on Twitter say democracy is on trial here...

May should be called out as negligent as she championed the halting free movement of people and presumed this would be enough when agreed with Brussels.

I personally know of individuals who are hoping to join in with the civil unrest we may see if we don't leave soon.

Parliment didn't accept the people's vote, pure and simple as parliment is pro remain and the people pro leave. The great disconnect.

A democracy that kicks the can down the street until it lands right has no place here. No amount of falling on swords will let this be forgotten.

Trafalgar has a fourth plinth. The man..The hour could see fill.

Here they are, the new EU break away union band 'stranded' with their new single coming straight in the charts at number 27.

Stranger things have happened at sea.

Democracy is not the problem, it's our parliamentary system that is out dated for the 21st century.

Democracy is not the problem, it's our parliamentary system that is out dated for the 21st century.

There is one political party in American politics that says our electoral system is out of date and they are campaigning to change it...Changing those election laws in the way they want would mean that their party will almost always win...Essentially that political party wants absolute power and long term, they no longer want to play by the rules and at the will of the people...Seems your MPs are in a similar boat...

The problem with direct democracy, where the people direct the government to do things, is that you require someone to enact the policy that the people vote for. There is no tradition of referenda in Britain, rather they go against our tradition. Whenever they have been held before, they have gone like this: the government, or a regional government, wants to do something, and they therefore ask the people to give them their permission to do it.

The Brexit plebiscite did not follow this convention at all. Instead it went like this: the government wanted not to do something (leave the EU), and asked the population to tell it that they did not want it to do the thing. Instead, the public told the government that they wanted it to do what it didn't want to. Usually, when a government does not want to do something, it has the good sense not to call a referendum on the matter. However, David Cameron was a foolhardy and inexperienced politician who recklessly called a referendum with no plan if it did not go his way.

In effect, Britain elected a policy (Brexit) without a government with the will and the means to accomplish it. It may have been possible, if British leaders were good at their jobs, knowledgeable and wise, but they actually embody the very opposite of these characteristics. You need a government in power who want to do what the people want or else direct government does not work.

Whatever the police are doing its obviously ineffective, are curfews coming to London?...

'It was a bloodbath': Police hunt knifeman who stabbed four 'lone and vulnerable' people from behind in random attacks during north London rampage as public are warned to be 'vigilant'

$

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT. One neighbour said she was 'definitely taking the bus' from now on after police warned the public to be on their guard in the wake of the attacks in Edmonton, north London, which left a 45-year-old woman fighting for her life.

The knifeman described as a tall, skinny, black man, wearing a hood and dark clothing, approached all of the people from behind in what police said were random attacks. Tonight police said they were still probing whether a man arrested today was behind the attacks, and promised 'enhanced and dedicated police activity around the clock' to keep the area safe.

Red and blue make purple.

I thought it would be brown but maybe irony will win the day and the deal is off.

Cryptic randomness.

Wow Merkel betrayed her country and Europe, in my opinion...

Germany Will Become An Islamic State – Says Merkel ‘They’ll Have To Come To Terms With It’

Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germans have failed to grasp how Muslim immigration has transformed their country and will have to come to terms with more mosques than churches throughout the countryside, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily.

As un-German as this statement is, it was actually made 9 years ago.

Let's be clear, Islam is not a race, it's a religion, calling someone a racist for insulting a religion or religious act is not racist...People have no problem insulting any other religion or religious act but as soon as Islam is insulted all the PC crowds comes out with torches and pitchforks...I'm referring to McGregor's comment, I don't necessarily like the guy but what he said is not racist...

No I got it right red and blue makes a pile of brown.

The shit comes together to make sure the people’s vote is ignored. I sincerely hope this crisis goes some way to reform our corrupt two party system.

I will never vote for either again.

May will be going down as the worst PM of all time and rightly so.

Its not looking good for May, but it hasn't for a while, she is bath salt, completely ineffective...

Twenty-five Labour MPs tell Corbyn to IGNORE calls for a referendum and do a deal with May - as both sides deny plans to give Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland a 'Stop Boris' VETO on future changes

The backbenchers' letter (inset) urged the Labour leader (pictured left, today) to make every effort to compromise with the PM if it would lead to an agreement that facilitated Brexit saying it did not need 'a confirmatory ballot'. They added that the talks, led today by shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer (pictured arriving), 'represent a real opportunity' for Mr Corbyn to get a deal which would meet Labour's demands for a Brexit that protected workers' rights. It came as Number 10 denied a Buzzfeed report that an option being looked at by both sides ahead of the meeting was a 'devolution lock' giving power to national assemblies in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
