Using blue shop towels in homemade face masks can filter particles 2x to 3x better than cotton, 3 clothing designers discover after testing dozens of fabrics

Suay Sew Shop
  • Lindsay Medoff, the CEO of Suay Sew Shop, a 30-employee boutique Los Angeles clothing manufacturer, wants the armies of people sewing homemade surgical masks to add a specific blue shop towel inside them.
  • Medoff and two friends were appalled by the dozens of mask patterns calling for cotton, a highly breathable, permeable fabric, and became obsessed with finding a fabric better suited for the job. They built a lab that could test particle filtration down to 0.3 microns and tested every fabric they could find, from coffee filters to industrial materials.
  • They discovered that by adding two blue shop towels and using a design that produces a tighter-fitting mask, they could make a mask that could block up to 95% of the particles they could test, while the cotton masks blocked 20% to 60% of the particles.
  • These are not meant to replace the N95 masks worn by healthcare workers — they're designed to be an alternative to the cotton masks that many people are making and wearing for quick trips to the grocery store.
  • The women are sewing 200,000 masks and giving them — and a design — away, as well as raising money to pay their workers their full wages.
  • They're also raising money to get their mask tested with the actual COVID-19 pathogen to see whether their design could be validated as a safer solution during the mask shortage.

The technology I'm currently employing for the protection of myself from this dangerous virus is as follows, I should note I found it interesting I had already acquired these devices over a few years previously to the current pandemic...

A respirator using P100 cartridges similar to this one, which I've had for a couple years now with spare cartridges, I wear this respirator anytime I am in public around other people and at work:

A Dr. Hulda Clark based Autozap-5 parasite zapper I purchased about 8 years ago or longer, I use it every day now with either the wrist bands or copper rods:

Also I have a Zadro ultraviolet disinfectant wand just like this one I purchased about 8 years ago as well, I used it irregularly before, now it's employed every day on my laptop keyboard, cell phone, pillows, etc.

Could the gas that gave us Viagra hold the key to treating coronavirus? Doctors in the US and Europe are testing nitric oxide to revive oxygen starved blood vessels in the lungs and spare patients from needing ventilators

Doctors from around the world are seeing if the gas that gave us the 'little blue pill' will also help treat the novel coronavirus as it continues to spread.

Nitric oxide is a colorless gas helps blood vessels dilate, which in turn leads to increasing the amount of oxygen flowing throughout the body. It's been used to treat newborns with heart defects and led to the development of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.

Now, scientists from three US states and three European countries are testing to see the drug can provide oxygen to starved blood vessels in the lungs and spare patients from needing ventilators.

For years, doctors have been using blends of nitric oxide/oxygen blends in critical care to dilate blood vessels to treat infants with birth defects.

This is often breathed in as gas as a last resort method before a baby has to be put on an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest.

Nitric oxide is also sometimes given to diabetes patients, who have low supplies of the molecule, which can lead to vascular damage. Additionally, the gas has been found to have antiviral properties against different types of coronaviruses.

AI-powered software developed by Ohio scientist can detect coronavirus in chest X-rays in a matter of SECONDS and with 98 percent accuracy

Barath Narayanan, a scientist at the University of Dayton Research Institute, has designed a specific software code that can detect the disease just by scanning chest X-rays.

The process uses a deep learning algorithm that was trained using scans of those with and without the disease in order to search searches for markings associated with coronavirus.

Narayanan told DailyMail.com in an email: 'What that means is that the software the software has decided something is there, in that particular region, and that particular something meets its criteria for classifying the image as having COVID markings (as opposed to not having COVID, or as opposed to having another lung disease).'

'Using deep learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, the algorithm taught itself to identify these markings. As it has continued to train itself with additional X-rays in my ongoing research, it's accuracy rate has gone from 98 percent to in excess of 99 percent.'

------------------------------

Blue Eye Soft owner Srikanth Kodeboyina — an alumnus of UD — and his team further developed the technology, and he plans to submit a full proposal to the FDA for approval within a matter of days.

The company has already filed a provisional patent on the software.

'We hope to be able to bring this new tool to market very quickly,' Kodeboyina said noting that professionals around the world are lending their expertise to expedite the development of the product.

Inhaling PURE Oxygen

Just a haunch. I know that Ozone is very reactive and thus harmful pathogen that kills both germs and human cells. But what about Oxygen? British prime minister Boris Johnson, upon arrival to hospital he was immediately put on Oxygen supply and he was cured in a matter of days. I have a feeling that because Oxygen is in a short supply it is reserved only for most serious cases and prime ministers.

Does anybody have info on weather inhaling pure Oxygen kills coronavirus?

Oxygen is used because the lungs' efficiency during the course of coronavirus infection is compromised, leading to hypoxia of varying severity. It is the degree of hypoxia which determines whether someone gets oxygen or not. Maintaining oxygen saturation probably has the effect that the body is better able to function at normal oxygen levels and thus fight infection, in addition to simply maintaining vital function. It is likely that Boris Johnson went to hospital because he began to experience difficulty breathing and was placed on oxygen therapy because his oxygen saturation was measurably low.

His own body's immune response. You should not take it that his discharge from hospital equates to his being 'cured'. He went through a patch during which the disease course was at its most severe and during which he required medical assistance. Either side of this period he was recovering outside of hospital, and is still doing so.

PLEASE don't post highly speculative and potentially lethal treatment ideas in this thread - I want this thread to be a tool to help people, not harm them. Breathing pure oxygen is incredibly dangerous for healthy people. As AD1184 has explained, the oxygen therapy given to coronavirus patients helps more than it hurts because the virus severely damages their lung tissue and the only way to get their blood-oxygen levels high enough to prevent catastrophic organ failure, is by giving them a higher oxygen concentration (and even then, only 20-30% of the intubated patients survive). A healthy person breathing enough pure oxygen will be killed by it:

Why does breathing pure oxygen kill you?

Sure thing. That's why I started the sentence with: "Just a haunch." and I said "I have a feeling" instead "I know that".

Isn't it the case tha astronauts breathe pure oxygen, at least during the Apollo mission. And pilots use oxygen.

Isn't it the case tha astronauts breathe pure oxygen, at least during the Apollo mission. And pilots use oxygen.
What matters is not the purity, but the product of the purity and the ambient pressure, a quantity called the partial pressure. In space, Apollo spacecraft were pressurized to 5 psi (0.35 atm) with pure oxygen, meaning that the PP02 (partial pressure of oxygen) is 0.35 atm, which gives the same oxygen exposure as breathing 35% oxygen enriched air at the earth's surface (they used air on the ground, after lessons learned from the Apollo 1 fire).

In aviation, oxygen is mandatory only above 10,000 feet altitude, where the ambient pressure is 0.7 atm, so pure oxygen also has a partial pressure of 0.7 atm, equivalent to 70% oxygen at sea level. In civil aviation, oxygen is typically for emergencies only, and is only expected to be breathed for a matter of minutes. The oxygen systems in fighter planes provide progressive enrichment of oxygen as the plane ascends higher.

You can breathe pure oxygen for limited periods. Divers, for example, breathe enriched air in varying concentrations up to 100% oxygen both to limit nitrogen exposure on shallow dives, and for decompression from deep dives. You can breathe oxygen safely for limited periods up to 1.4 atm PP02 when moving, and up to 1.6 atm PP02 static while avoiding central nervous system oxygen toxicity, which is a more acute form of oxygen toxicity that can cause loss of consciousness, but is not a consideration in medical treatment (unless in hyperbaric medicine). Longer term, oxygen is toxic to the lungs at high partial pressures, and this pulmonary oxygen toxicity risk is managed by recording oxygen exposure units, which are derived from the product of PP02 and the time spent breathing at that pressure. You are 'allowed' a certain number of oxygen exposure units on any day.

Why do you believe that this device is useful?

I have used it randomly for many years when I have felt like a cold or sinus condition coming on and whether its a coincidence or a placebo the next morning I have felt much better...I wouldn't put it past the placebo option, the device being more of a object of focus for a mental persuasion within myself to feel better...Whether it really and truly works as advertised or not, I honestly cannot say, but its been a useful tool for me if for nothing else, peace of mind...If I get Covid-19 whilst regularly using the device I can guarantee you it will be in the rubbish bin as soon as possible...lol

Why are so many COVID-19 patients also seeing blood clots?

As the COVID-19 pandemic ravages a world still grappling with vast uncertainty over the virus, a new and unnerving pattern has emerged in some patients.

Though novel coronavirus symptoms thus far have presented chiefly within the respiratory system, the infection is swiftly showing to be an all-out, system-wide assault that reaches far past the lungs. Doctors in hot spots across the globe have begun to report an unexpected prevalence of blood clotting among COVID cases, in what could pose a perfect storm of potentially fatal risk factors.

In New Orleans, a man in his 30s was admitted to the hospital a week into treatment for the flu, severely sick. Developing shortness of breath, chest pain and an abnormally rapid heart rate -- he was tested for coronavirus -- doctors realized those symptoms also are typical of a pulmonary embolism: a potentially deadly blood clot that can move from the legs to the lungs and damage the heart.

The man's blood work already showed heart damage, though he had no known underlying medical conditions, no recent travel, no recent surgeries. His chest scans, shown first to ABC News, revealed a massive clot. Termed a "saddle embolus" because it hooks over branches of both pulmonary arteries, it was severely stressing the right side of the heart, unable to push blood against the clot already in its strained state.

"Thankfully, we were able to find this and treat this early, otherwise it probably would have killed him," Dr. Siyab Panhwar, a cardiovascular consult for the patient, told ABC News.

The patient's system, riddled with inflammation -- increasingly a pattern among patients with COVID-19 -- in such a heightened state may have been doing more harm than good because inflammation -- a defensive mechanism in the body -- can increase clotting.

The body's response creates a domino effect that may cause further harm, doctors told ABC News. Patients' systems are strained by numerous factors triggered by the virus -- stressed lungs, severe inflammation -- that set in motion the clotting effect.

It's growing so common with severe COVID cases, doctors are recognizing it as a new pattern of clotting called COVID-19-associated coagulopathy, or CAC, which is notably associated with high inflammatory markers in the blood, like D-dimer and fibrinogen.

"This virus is affecting the lungs, but it appears to be causing inflammation of the whole body," Dr. Viren Kaul, a pulmonary critical care specialist at Crouse Health and an assistant professor of medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University, told ABC News. With those patients at a higher risk of clotting, doctors must identify those individuals a quickly as possible.

In Spain, among the hardest-hit nations, clotting cases have become so prevalent in novel coronavirus patients that doctors have begun routinely treating individuals with therapeutic doses of anticoagulation medication.

"In the beginning of the outbreak, we started only giving them medicine to prevent clots. We saw that it wasn't enough," Dr. Cristina Abad, an anesthesiologist at Hospital Clínicos San Carlos in Madrid, told ABC News. "They started having pulmonary embolisms, so we started [full] anticoagulation on everyone."

Nearly half of the COVID-19 deaths in Spain have been in Madrid.

I'm seeing a spike in the prevalence of news articles about successful results from the widening use of convalescent blood plasma on critical COVID-19 patients, so I thought I'd share some articles about it here.

I don't think there's any doubt that this treatment helps and has already saved many lives - the only question that we can't answer yet is "just how effective is this treatment?" Until the clinical trial results come in we can't put numbers on it, but a lot of doctors are excited by the results they're seeing with their patients given this "passive immunity treatment" so I see good reasons for high hopes here.

Convalescent blood plasma treatment has been used for over a century to treat all kinds of viruses ranging from the H1N1 Spanish flu to the original SARS virus to ebola. And while positive results have been seen with it, we've never had an opportunity to test its efficacy with modern clinical trials until now, because we haven't seen an outbreak of this magnitude in the last century. Briefly put, this treatment involves taking blood from a patient who has recently recovered from the virus, sending it through a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the blood cells, and collecting the plasma while sending the blood cells back to the patient in a saline solution. The antibodies remain suspected in the plasma, so this can then be given to COVID-19 patients who have the same blood type as the donor. It's just about the safest form of medical treatment out there, short of taking an aspirin. And unlike developmental vaccines and other treatments, it's available right now to help save lives.

The FDA is conducting clinical trials regarding the use of blood plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients to transfer antibodies to patients fighting the virus and over 1900 hospitals are now participating in the trials. Here are some of the pertinent articles that have appeared in the medical journals recently:

"Convalescent plasma as a potential therapy for COVID-19," Chen et al., Lancet, Feb 27, 2020

"Effectiveness of convalescent plasma therapy in severe COVID-19 patients," Duan et a., PNAS, March 18, 2020.

"Treatment of 5 Critically Ill Patients With COVID-19 With Convalescent Plasma," Shen et al., JAMA, March 27, 2020

Here's an interesting article about the use of convalescent blood plasma to treat the original SARS virus back in 2005, with an excerpt from that paper below:

"Experience of using convalescent plasma for severe acute respiratory syndrome among healthcare workers in a Taiwan hospital," Yeh et al., J Antimicrob Chemo, November 2005.

"Results: Viral load dropped from 495 × 10^3, 76 × 10^3 or 650 × 10^3 copies/mL to zero or 1 copy/mL one day after transfusion. Anti-SARS-CoV IgM and IgG also increased in a time-dependent manner following transfusion. All three patients survived. One HCW became pregnant subsequently, delivering 13 months after discharge. Positive anti-SARS-CoV IgG was detected in the newborn. Passive transfer of anti-SARS-CoV antibody from the mother was considered as a possibility.

Conclusions: All infected HCW whose condition had progressed severely and who had failed to respond to the available treatment, survived after transfusion with convalescent plasma."

Coronavirus treatment hope in form of an antiviral drug taken as a nasal spray as lab tests show it 'blocks the deadly virus from latching on to lung cells'

An antiviral drug that could be taken as a nasal spray can block the coronavirus from latching onto lung cells, according to laboratory trials. The medicine, marketed as Neumifil, was developed as a treatment for flu but may be able to prevent COVID-19, scientists say.

A study by the University of St Andrews in Scotland found it could bind to the 'spike'-shaped proteins on the outside of the virus and stop it latching to cells found in human airways. Only lab tests have been done so far but the results, watched over by Public Health England, give hope that the drug could be used on COVID-19 patients.

Scientists around the world are scrambling to find a cure for COVID-19 so countries can come out of lockdown without fear of a second outbreak. So far two of the most promising drugs, remdesivir and hydroxychloroquine, have not been found to be beneficial in clinical trials. The latter might even make the disease more deadly, some results have suggested. Neumifil works by blocking the coronavirus's interaction with structures called ACE-2 receptors in the airways, which are the virus's doorway into the body. These receptors are a big point of focus for scientists trying to stop the disease.

Some suggest they could be a reason that smokers appear to have lower rates of serious illness when infected with COVID-19 - there is speculation that nicotine may reduce numbers of the receptors, blocking access. But scientists also say they may have a protective effect in the lungs and low levels are linked to worse damage from viral infection. Other studies have shown smoking raises levels of ACE-2 receptors.
