Deadly Wuhan Coronavirus

From what I've been reading about Covid-19, the shit is really going to hit the fan in about 2 weeks. We could see a huge spike in cases due to the close contact from the protests.

If we do not see a big increase (and I hope and pray we don't) it will call into question, whether justified or not, the wisdom of the quarantine.

I am not really sure what the result will be at this stage. I would have thought a couple of months ago that it definitely would lead to a large spike, now I am not so sure. It appears that gatherings out of doors are less important vectors of transmission than gatherings indoors. There also seems to be a general downward trend in the rate of transmission in most places at the moment, regardless of measures taken. I don't know if it can be explained by the amount of immunity built up due to exposure to the virus or if another mechanism is at work (a few posts above I speculated that it in the northern hemisphere it might be due to higher levels of immunocompetence from greater vitamin D production with the longer days, but this is unproven).

Many of the political forces that are spurring on the protests (or even doing nothing to attempt to dissuade them) were also strongly in favour of the lockdowns.

For the record, I believe the dangers of the Covid-19 virus were blown out of proportion. That being said, I'm just some guy going on his gut instinct. There are a lot of really, really smart people out there saying that the virus is going to come back in a major second wave.

New cases of covid-19 are spiking in the southern states and I was out briefly in town, I saw very few people wearing masks...There was a report from Pennsylvania of a 22yo arrested for rioting and knew he was a positive carrier of covid-19 so intentionally spreading it, the report stated he was not wearing a mask or other ppe, so how many others are like him?...

US billionaires have become $565 billion richer during the pandemic

The past three months have been financially painful for many Americans -- but not for billionaires.

US billionaires have become $565 billion richer since March 18, according to a report published Thursday by the Institute for Policy Studies, a progressive think tank.
Total wealth for billionaires now stands at $3.5 trillion, up 19% from the low point near the beginning of the pandemic, the report said. Amazon (AMZN) boss Jeff Bezos alone is worth $36.2 billion more than he was on March 18.

Since that day, nearly 43 million Americans have filed for initial unemployment benefits. Lower-income workers, especially in travel and service-sector jobs, have been hit particularly hard by the health crisis.

Deaths jump in Brazil's indigenous tribes as virus spreads

Coronavirus is spreading fast through Brazil's indigenous populations, with deaths caused by the disease increasing more than five-fold in the past month, according to data collected by a national association of first peoples.

Many epidemiologists had hoped remote locations might protect the tribes, but the virus, which first took hold in Brazil's cosmopolitan state capitals of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, is increasingly devastating these far-flung communities where basic healthcare is often precarious.

For many indigenous it harks back to a dark past.

When Europeans first navigated the rivers of the Amazon rainforest, their smallpox decimated local tribes. Later, rubber tappers, gold miners and settlers brought malaria, measles and influenza. Now, it is COVID-19.

Deaths among Brazil's indigenous populations rose to 182 by June 1, from 28 at the end of April, according to the Articulation of Brazil's Indigenous Peoples (APIB) - a national umbrella association that brings together the country's 305 tribes.

I don’t know if this is a sign that things are returning to normal or not. Our local Chinese restaurant has been closed for a couple of months now. I thought for sure it would be a permanent closure. In the last few days they have opened for takeout only. We tried to order some things but the menu is strictly limited. Thankfully I normally have sweet and sour chicken and that was available. I want to try and frequent the restaurants that my wife and I usually go to. I don’t want to see these places close for good.

Two and a half miles from us a new a Planet Fitness was built from scratch. They no sooner opened the doors before they had to close. All that money sunk into a new business and no customers allowed in. I will be wondering what the outcome will be.

This is due entirely to the policy of quantitative easing enacted by the US Federal Reserve bank where it prints money to buy stock to maintain and improve the fortunes of billionaires, as its instrument of 'economic recovery'. It is the most massive redistribution of wealth in history, from the less well-off to the super-rich.

Thousands Who Got COVID-19 in March Are Still Sick

For Vonny LeClerc, day one was March 16.

Hours after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson instated stringent social-distancing measures to halt the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, LeClerc, a Glasgow-based journalist, arrived home feeling shivery and flushed. Over the next few days, she developed a cough, chest pain, aching joints, and a prickling sensation on her skin. After a week of bed rest, she started improving. But on day 12, every old symptom returned, amplified and with reinforcements: She spiked an intermittent fever, lost her sense of taste and smell, and struggled to breathe.

When I spoke with LeClerc on day 66, she was still experiencing waves of symptoms. “Before this, I was a fit, healthy 32-year-old,” she said. “Now I’ve been reduced to not being able to stand up in the shower without feeling fatigued. I’ve tried going to the supermarket and I’m in bed for days afterwards. It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.” Despite her best efforts, LeClerc has not been able to get a test, but “every doctor I’ve spoken to says there’s no shadow of a doubt that this has been COVID,” she said. Today is day 80.

COVID-19 has existed for less than six months, and it is easy to forget how little we know about it. The standard view is that a minority of infected people, who are typically elderly or have preexisting health problems, end up in critical care, requiring oxygen or a ventilator.

About 80 percent of infections, according to the World Health Organization, “are mild or asymptomatic,” and patients recover after two weeks, on average. Yet support groups on Slack and Facebook host thousands of people like LeClerc, who say they have been wrestling with serious COVID-19 symptoms for at least a month, if not two or three. Some call themselves “long-termers” or “long-haulers.”

Second U.S. Virus Wave Emerges With Texas Hitting Record

Texas on Wednesday reported 2,504 new coronavirus cases, the highest one-day total since the pandemic emerged.

A month into its reopening, Florida this week reported 8,553 new cases -- the most of any seven-day period.

California’s hospitalizations are at their highest since May 13 and have risen in nine of the past 10 days.

A fresh onslaught of the novel coronavirus is bringing challenges for residents and the economy in pockets across the U.S. The localized surges have raised alarms among experts even as they’re masked by the nation’s overall case count, which early this week rose just under 1%, the smallest increase since March.

“There is a new wave coming in parts of the country,” said Eric Toner, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “It’s small and it’s distant so far, but it’s coming.”

Market Meltdown: Dow Dives 1,800 Points On Worries Of 2nd Coronavirus Wave

Stocks plunged Thursday amid reports of a second wave of coronavirus cases, as well as a warning from Fed officials that the economy may take longer than first thought to recover.

In one of the worst one-day drops in history, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 1,861 points, or 6.9%, and the S&P 500 tumbled about 5.9%. Airline and hospitality companies, which have been especially hard hit by the COVID-19 lockdowns, were among those losing ground.

Prices also fell sharply in European and Asian markets.

The plunge took place after Texas reported 2,504 new coronavirus cases — the most since the pandemic began. Florida and Arizona also reported spikes, and California had the highest number of hospitalizations since May 13. Nationally, confirmed cases topped 2 million on Wednesday.

This whole good news, bad news thing with the virus is officially driving me insane. Earlier this week the stock market had one of its best days in years because there was a new consensus that, yes, the second wave is coming and, yes, it will be bad but we will be much better equipped to handle it and treat it.

Now, all of a sudden, we're hearing in the news that the second wave could be more devastating than previously thought and the market does a nose dive. :drunk: :worried:

Hope for the best - But assume the worst.

Like the Spanish flu in 1918 it may come back in a much worse mutated form
- That form back then supposedly killed 50 million people worldwide!

If your young and healthy chances are you will not get it and if you do it will be mild.

But the thing is young and healthy people are often carriers and don't realize they have it.

Best bet - Assume everybody has it or is carrying it
- And if you are in the high risk category for serious infection {old and/or have chronic
medical conditions},
stay in as much as possible, always wear a face mask when in public
and try to interact with as few people as possible in person and try to keep as much
distance away from them as possible.

Remember as the famous baseball player and coach Yogi Berra once said:

"IT AIN'T OVER TILL ITS OVER" !!!

Indian holy man who claimed he could perform 'Covid exorcisms' by kissing people's hands dies of coronavirus - having already infected 20 of his followers

A holy man in India who claimed he could perform coronavirus exorcisms by kissing people's hands has died from the killer bug - after infecting 20 of his followers.

The tantric man, from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, would kiss the hands of his devotees and told them it would rid their lives of problems. He also claimed his 'kiss-cure' worked on coronavirus patients - despite the virus spreading through contagious droplets from the mouth or nose.

Health department officials said the man contracted coronavirus himself, testing positive for the killer bug on 3 June and dying just a day later. They began contact tracing those who had been in contact with the man and took 40 swab samples to identify any further cases.

Twenty of those swabs returned a positive result, including from seven members of the man's family.

Coronavirus has reaffirmed the scientific method as the most powerful way of thinking.

If we simply compare 1918 Spanish Flue epidemic, we find that about 500 million were infected and 50 million died.

In contrast to that, 100 years later in 2020, an equally powerful virus COVID-19, only caused 7.27 million infections and just 413,000 deaths. So, in just 100 years, science reduced the number of deaths from major worldwide epidemics by 121 times.

It is seldom brought to public knowledge that after science suppressed primitive religious thinking financial wealth of nations increased 4,000% in just 300 years in comparison with previous 14,000 years. Science increased financial wealth by both creating more things to sell and more ways to sell.

As well, COVID-19 epidemic had shown that scientifically uneducated populist politicians are a downright threat to society, with Donald Trump's "common-sense" suggestion that infected people should inhale disinfectant and Brasilian PM suppressing critical statistics figures to hide his inability to handle the crisis. It is time to make it mandatory for majority of seats in parliament/congress to be taken by politicians with a scientific background. Dumb politicians will only over-promise and under-deliver.

" ... The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Although there is not universal consensus regarding where the virus originated, it spread worldwide during 1918-1919. In the United States, it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918. It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States. "

The Spanish flu pandemic began in January 1918 and lasted until December 1920, I would wait until this coronavirus run for the same amount of time of 36 months before comparing final statistical numbers...In my opinion science has not come through yet for us in this current pandemic, I'd know many are working on vaccines but we haven't got that yet, if it will even be possible and it's likely lazy science which allowed this virus to escape from the laboratory in Wuhan...In a way we can blame science for this current pandemic...
