20-Something Who Thought COVID Was 'Bullshit' Pleads From ICU to Wear Masks

A 29-year-old man sent a strong warning to others from his bed in an intensive care unit following a battle with COVID-19: "I paid the price. I have got no underlying health issues. I don't want anyone making the same mistakes as me."

Chris Grailey, a sales manager from Ancoats, a neighborhood of Manchester, England, filmed a video message from his hospital bed talking about his condition and warning others about the seriousness of the virus. Grailey was the "first to say [coronavirus] was all bullshit."

"I paid the price... Now I'm in intensive care, waiting to get more treatment, and not knowing if I'm coming out the other side," he says in the video, which he shared with the Manchester Evening News. "So I really want you to take this message on board because it could happen to anyone. Please, please take care."

Grailey caught coronavirus while vacationing recently in Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, he said. The man described his mindset while there "thinking I was invincible, not wearing a mask," he says in the video.

He was sick for most of his vacation, having cold sweats and losing his taste and smell, Grailey told the Evening News. But his condition worsened even further upon his return to Watford, a town located northwest of London where Grailey is currently based for a work project.

The man went to the hospital Sunday morning for tests and scans to see what could be wrong, but doctors ended up sending him home later that night. Grailey returned to the hospital again Tuesday morning, and was rushed "straight onto a COVID ward," he told the Evening News.

There, doctors diagnosed Grailey with the virus as well as acute pneumonia. As part of his treatment plan, he is on four different antibiotics and steroids, and receives oxygen 24 hours a day to help him breathe, Grailey said.

wasn't that long ago that Florida, Texas and I think Georgia were having major spikes, hospitals were nearing capacity, it was raining frogs, toads, cats were laying with dogs, etc.

... and now Florida reopened and all that kind of went away. So what happened? News cycle lost interest and moved on? Based on all the Fear should we all be dead twice already?

Great. This gentleman caught Covid on holiday and then boarded a flight home while symptomatic. Were there any laws broken here?

Thats the problem I see around here, everyone in my area seem to have been going on a vacation lately, how many are going to return with extra baggage (covid)?...My area of NC has kept relatively low numbers of infected and of related deaths, however lately there's been the mindset of individuals here to stop wearing masks in the shops and on top of that many are beginning to travel...

The timeline is not clear here. I have read the Newsweek article and not watched the video. However, the article says that he was sick for 'most of his holiday'. Just how long did he spend in Tenerife? Covid has up to a two-week incubation period, so to be certain that he caught it in Tenerife, he would have had to have been there at least two weeks before showing symptoms, and then to have spend 'most' of his holiday sick he would have to have been there just over another two weeks while showing symptoms, only having to go to hospital some time after his return. It is thus difficult to square this man's claims about his holiday and disease course with what is known about Covid.

The problem I see is that gyms, bars and restaurants will start to slack off maintaining health standards. We could be looking at another spike in the virus. I truly hope not.

Neanderthal genes linked to severe COVID-19

A group of genes passed down from extinct human cousins is linked with a higher risk for severe COVID-19, researchers say. When they compared the genetic profiles of about 3,200 hospitalized COVID-19 patients and nearly 900,000 people from the general population, they found that a cluster of genes on chromosome 3 inherited from Neanderthals who lived more than 50,000 years ago is linked with 60% higher odds of needing hospitalization.

People with COVID-19 who inherited this gene cluster are also more likely to need artificial breathing assistance, coauthor Hugo Zeberg of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology said in a news release. The prevalence of these genes varies widely, according to a report published on Wednesday in Nature. In South Asia, roughly 30% of people have them, compared to roughly one in six Europeans. They are almost non-existent in Africa and East Asia.

While the study cannot explain why these particular genes confer a higher risk, the authors conclude, "with respect to the current pandemic, it is clear that gene flow from Neanderthals has tragic consequences."

The major genetic risk factor for severe COVID-19 is inherited from Neanderthals

It couldn't happen to a nicer person, that's for sure.

Your profile says Great Britain - is that right? Just curious why so on about a foreign election?
I pay attention to global news but can't say any of it gets me too fired up.

Just curious.

I don't really care about the election. I just don't like Donald Trump. The prominence your President and your election have internationally is something that Americans do not experience of another country.

The US election is something that is ram-rodded down our throats, whether we like it or not. This for example is the current homepage of the BBC News website (aimed at British users):

In addition to the prominent coverage given to Trump in the articles, notice that the categories of news along the top of the page. "Home", "Coronavirus", and then "US Election".
