'Giant Rat' Pulled from Mexico City Drainage System

A drainage cleaning project in Mexico City took a bizarre turn when workers unearthed a giant rat costume that was unsettlingly similar to a real rodent. The nightmarish piece of debris was reportedly part of a massive haul of 22 tons of garbage that had been fished out of the city's drainage system in an effort to alleviate a flooding problem which has plagued the community over the last few weeks due to heavy rain. As one might imagine, the enormous 'rat' constituted quite the clog and spawned something of a mystery as far as where it came from and how it got in the drain.

A resident named Evelin Lopez eventually came forward to claim ownership of the oddity and explained that it is a human-sized rat costume that she acquired as a Halloween decoration but subsequently lost when it was swept away by floodwaters long ago. How such a huge object could wind up in Mexico City's drainage system remains unanswered as does what Lopez plans to do with the 'rodent' now that it's back in her possession. Alas, given its current condition after sitting in the drain for so long, one assumes that she does not plan to don the costume anytime soon.

Man dies from eating more than a bag of liquorice a day

A construction worker in the US state of Massachusetts was killed by his liquorice habit, doctors say. The man, who has not been named but was 54 years old, ate about one-and-a-half bags of black liquorice every day. He had suffered no symptoms before suddenly going into cardiac arrest in a fast food restaurant.

Describing the man's case in the New England Journal of Medicine, his doctors said the glycyrrhizic acid in liquorice was to blame. "We are told that this patient has a poor diet and eats a lot of candy. Could his illness be related to candy consumption?" Dr Elazer R Edelman said.

He said studies had shown glycyrrhizic acid - the active ingredient in liquorice - could cause "hypertension, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, fatal arrhythmias, and renal failure" - all of which were seen in this patient.

Hypokalemia is when a person's potassium levels in their blood become dangerously low.

The patient had also recently changed the type of sweets he was eating. A few weeks before his death, he switched from red fruit-flavoured twists to another type made with black liquorice.

Another doctor, Dr Andrew L Lundquist, agreed in the report that the liquorice was to blame. He wrote: "Further investigation revealed a recent change to a liquorice-containing candy as the likely cause of his hypokalemia."

If licorice poses a health risk, shouldn't that be publicized? Then again, important info has been omitted, namely, how long his daily licorice eating had been going on. If it had been 30 or 40 years (or more) then the article and medical diagnosis would be very misleading.

Apparently licorice is toxic if one consumes too much and has been widely publicized...

he NIH has warned that it’s “possibly unsafe” to eat just 1 ounce of black licorice a day for several weeks. In addition to the FDA’s list of drastic possible too-much-licorice results, the NIH adds paralysis, brain damage, and erectile dysfunction.

And if you eat a lot of salt, if you have high blood pressure, or if you have heart or kidney disease, the NIH says as little as a sixth of an ounce of licorice a day could cause these problems.

Fortunately, I've never been into black licorice. I like red Twizzlers, but they literally don't contain any licorice at all.

Yeah black licorice is definitely an acquired taste, I've eaten it before very sparcely but yeah I prefer the red (strawberry) twizzlers if I wanted some licorice candy (which ironically, as you said, does not contain any real licorice lol)...

Even water. It is called water intoxication.

Woman 'missing for two years' found alive floating off the Colombian coast

Angelica Gaitan, 46, was unconscious and suffering from hypothermia when she was pulled from the water by fishermen off the coast of Colombia. Rolando Visbal spotted Ms Gaitan floating around 1.2 miles off the town of Puerto Colombia at around 6am on Saturday.

Her first words after being rescued reportedly were: "I was born again, God did not want me to die." Dramatic video of the rescue shows Mr Visbal and a friend pulling Ms Gaitan on board and giving her water.

She appears unresponsive and was reportedly suffering from hypothermia.

They initially mistook her for a log before she lifted her hands to wave. It's thought she was at sea for eight hours before she was rescued. Ms Gaitan was taken to hospital where she was reunited with her family.

Mr Visbal told a local radio he nearly didn't go out fishing after problems with his boat's engine caused delays to an earlier trip.

Talking about the rescue, he told Caracol Radio: "Gustavo warned me to be careful with the trunk and I began to turn about 15 degrees to the right, then to my surprise the trunk moved. I thought it was something supernatural."

He said Ms Gaitan didn't say anything when they hauled her onto the vessel. He added: "So it turns out that I didn't catch any fish that day either, but I fished a life. I think this was God's purpose."

It is not clear how the woman managed to spend the last two years.

Ms Gaitan told another local radio, RCN, that she had fled an abusive relationship, although this has been disputed by family. Ms Gaitan's daughter Alejandra Castiblanco told local media she hadn't seen her mother for two years and didn't know her location. She and her sister are now raising money to get Ms Gaitan to Bogota where they live, more than 1,500 miles away from Colombia, so they can care for her.

Quite a rescue, but from other sources, she was in the water for "only" 8 hours. Apparently, she had attempted suicide by jumping into the water. Nevertheless, she's gotten a second chance at life.

Utah man steals truck for alien encounter, but felt bad and returned it

A Utah man allegedly stole a truck he said he needed to rendezvous with aliens but felt bad for stealing it and returned it to a 7 Eleven store.

Bryce Jerald Dixon is accused of theft of a vehicle and three attempts to escape from official custody after he returned a red pickup truck that he later told police he needed so that he could "get to the Colosseum to get on a flight with alien diplomats."

According to court documents, Dixon intended to drive the truck all the way to the Colosseum but felt bad for stealing it so he returned to the 7 Eleven he took it from to give it back. The truck had been reported stolen when the owner — who left his truck unlocked with the keys inside while he stopped into the story — called 911.

Police responded and investigated and when an officer arrived at the convenience store he was met by the truck's owner who said the man suspected of taking it returned it and was running from the location. The officer used his radio and another officer took the suspect into custody.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for an injury sustained when the truck owner allegedly punched him in the face. Once in hospital care, police said Dixon tried to slip past officers three times. There Dixon allegedly apologized to police and told them aliens needed him to get to the Colosseum.

He was booked into the Utah County jail on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and police and three counts of attempted escape.

Terrifying clown 'tormenting Kingswinford neighbourhood'

A Black Country street has been gripped by the fears of a clown after residents claimed they are being terrorised by a bare-chested motorist in full circus make-up. And police have been contacted by householders who say Bozo is in danger of making Ploverdale Crescent, Kingswinford, a no-go area.

According to residents, officers are tracing the footsteps of the rogue Big Top entertainer. The bizarre spate of clown encounters is no laughing matter, say locals. They described the confrontations as "sinister". They have CCTV footage.

On Thursday, the individual approached a young couple delivering leaflets. At first they thought he was on his way to a children's party. Then the red-nosed individual "stared out" the 19-year-old woman before guffawing in her face.

Her companion told Black Country Live: "He laughed like a clown." The 20-year-old added: "He stared at my girlfriend for a minute or so and started to laugh like a clown. "At first I just thought he was on his way to a children’s party or something, I didn’t see him that clearly.

"We tried to ignore him and carried on doing the leaflets, we tried to pay no attention to him to see if he would stop. But as we got closer, he got in his car and opened his passenger door and asked me if I was someone he knew.

"When I said no, he started laughing more. It was a scary experience for both of us. I went out last night and spent half the time looking over my shoulder."

The "victim" has provided a detailed description.

He added: "He was about 5ft 8ins tall. He was wearing clown face paint, false clown teeth, no top on with a black cap and joggers. He was laughing like a clown and had knife scars on his belly."

.

I think that I am going to establish my own personal Creepy Clown Policy.

I ever see one skulking around my policy will be to immediately without the slightest hesitation beat the living shit out of It.

F*****g evil clowns. Not crazy about clowns to begin with, but evil ones, noooooooooooo.

Around here you can get a ticket for that. Contractor did that and came out to find his truck down the block inside a store with a gibbering nutcase behind the wheel.

I understand not locking it, but not taking the keys?

The Ghost of Allison Road

A ghostly girl haunts Allison Rd. in North Motton, near Ulverstone. We have heard many strange tales of this road including Cars stalling, apparition sightings, cars being scratched and even a story of a girl being picked up only to have her disappear from the car.

Many ghost hunters have heard of a tradition in the area where you must go out to the stump at midnight and walk a lap of it. It is probably one of the most widely known and discussed ghost stories in Tasmania. What few people know is the history behind this ghostly girl. The history behind this girl is back in 1921 a young Chrissie Venn who was 13 at the time left her parents home on Allison Road to run some errands at a nearby town called North Motton. Unfortunately she never returned home that day. A search was organised and 9 days later her mutilated body was found in a hollow stump just off Allison Road where she would have travelled as she walked to North Motton that tragic day. One of the searchers, George William King who was a former miner and policeman was charged with Venn’s murder. Most of the evidence pointing to him was some strange marks or injuries on his hands, however he claimed he had injured himself while searching. He was successfully defended in court by Albert Ogilvie, who would go on to become Premier of Tasmania. Unfortunately no one was ever charged with Chrissie’s death.

Since her death, there has been many experiences reported on this stretch of road. One particular story of a male who approached the area of Allison Road known as “The Dip” (most of the activity is reported here) the check engine light came on in the car. Next thing he knew, he and his friend in the other car were lost. Somehow they had made a wrong turn on a road with next to no turns. They became so lost they couldn’t get a signal on their GPS. After a lot of driving they finally found their way out of the area, but as they left the area, the engine check light turned off. It never came on again in the time he owned the car…
