"I observed what seem to be a large plate hovering over the school,"

Police Officer Mahan

As so often happens when looking into the UFO subject for certain trends, patterns, characteristics etc. you do come across certain cases (or flaps) you've never heard of before.

For some bizarre reason there does appear to be quite a number of close range UFO sightings over schools so whilst looking into relevant police reports did see this very strange one from the 22nd of April, 1966 in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Turns out over that over a twelve day period lots of other very strange UFO reports started coming in from the general area also involving multiple witnesses (including police officers).

• Close range UFO sighting directly over a school - 22nd of April, 1966 in Beverly Massachusetts.

Excerpts:

A completely baffling case involving nine witnesses took place on April 22, 1966, in Beverly, Mass.. The women crossed the field to get a better look. They could see flashing lights on the edge of the craft changing colors from red to green and blue. Brenda waved her arms at the object and it immediately stopped circling and moved across the field towards the women. They were horrified. In her statement, Barbara said: "It started to come towards us... I started to run. Brenda called, 'Look up! It is directly over us!' I looked up and saw a round object... like the bottom of a plate. It was solid, grayish white... I felt this thing was going to come down on top of me. It was like a giant mushroom."

• Police:

The police arrived to find a small crowd of people standing outside watching the closest object moving up and down above the school. Jokingly, Officers Bossie and Mahan asked the group, "Where's the airplane?" When the witnesses pointed to the thing, then at high altitude and looking like a star, the officers laughed. Then, suddenly, the disc turned bright red and dropped to a position directly over the school building. At this point, the officers became visibly shaken. Mahan stated, "I observed what seem to be a large plate hovering over the school. It had three lights - red, green, and blue - but no noise... This object hovered... The lights were flashing..." Bossie said, "It hovered and then began gliding. Some of the people got on the ground and were real scared!"

On the nights of 19th and 20th April there were also at least six UFO reports 50 miles away in Sharon - a NICAP investigation ended up logging eighteen down the eastern seaboard.

• Police witnesses, April 19th - video and radio interview (rare vid so please download if poss).

Documentary spotlighting a close-range UFO sighting made in April 1966 by four Sharon, Massachusetts police officers (one of whom went on to become Chief) - along with a family of three people. All were near enough to witness a "football-shaped," unidentified low-hovering object with red and white flashing lights, windows and "mullions" (window dividers).

REMEMBER WHEN: UFOs seen over Sharon in 1966?

The UFO hovered, moved up and down and back and forth over a small area. It was silent while hovering, but gave off a high-pitched hissing sound when it moved.

• Discs:

At 11:45 p.m. in Quincy, Mass., about 30 miles northeast of Bellingham, there were sightings of disc-shaped objects with red lights hovering and then 'swinging like a pendulum'.

A report, prepared by Massachusetts NICAP Subcommittee Chairman Raymond Fowler, logs 18 sightings of UFOs between April 11 and 23 along the eastern Massachusetts shore from Danvers, north of Boston, to Attleboro, near the Connecticut border. The large majority of sightings occurred over city residential areas, and the predominant shape of the reported objects was oval. Virtually all had body lights; several gave off high-pitched humming noises.

Interesting that Raymond mentions reports of UFOs making 'high-pitched humming noises' between April 11th and 23rd as over in Portage County on the 17th police officers also chased this strange humming object over 86 miles into Pennsylvania.

• There's also this one from Massachusetts on the 24th of April involving an object with a 'transparent bubble' on top (and circular red blinking lights) which banged against a house - power outages also reported.

UFO Scares Hub Girl, 11, ‘Rocked Bed’ ”

“An 11-year-old Dorchester girl was terrified by a UFO early Sunday morning (24 April 1966) which she said banged against the house and rocked her bed.

Judy Kalnicki of 1284 Dorchester ave., an honor student in the sixth grade at the Mather School, woke up screaming for her mother, Mrs. Jean Kalnicki, who has six other children. Then the youngster sat down and sketched the ‘flying oval.’

TWO BLACKOUTS

The mysterious flying object was spotted twice by the Kalnicki family, and two blackouts of electric power occurred almost simultaneously in the Dorchester area. Police also received calls that UFO’s were spotted off Boston’s Logan Airport, over South Boston and near Waltham’s Waverly sq. Shortly after 4 a.m. Judy was awakened and saw ‘this thing’ outside her third-floor bedroom window. ‘It was so close I could almost touch it,’ Judy said. ‘It banged against the house as we watched it. I was sitting on my bed, and it rocked the bed back and forth. Then the lights in the house went out.

BIG AS AUTO

Judy said the ‘thing’ was oval in shape and ‘about the size of my brother’s car, a 1955 Lincoln.’ ‘It had a bubble on top that seemed to be round, with red lights around the edge,’ Judy explained. ‘It seemed to be made partly of silvery gray metal with no doors. ‘I always used to say that there was no such thing as a flying saucer. I thought those people who said they saw them were making it up. Now that I saw one myself I never want to see one again.’

Mrs. Kalnicki said she had spotted the UFO shortly before midnight when it floated across Dorchester ave. and hovered outside her apartment windows. The mother said it had sort of a transparent bubble top that was illuminated with a yellow light and circular red blinking lights.

Lots of similar reports from the month before in Michigan so this could just be a continuation.

"It would swing back and forth like a pendulum, then shoot upward at tremendous speed, hover and then come down just as fast."

The annual NICAP chronology from April, 66 really does make for some interesting reading - also a bit ironic that they were holding the US Congressional UFO hearings in the same month.

This is a 34-page chronology (increased from 11-pages) of UFO incidents and events for 1966, the beginning of the "Mother of All UFO Waves", which lasted throughout 1966 and 1967.

The complete NUFORC report list is linked below and looks like humming disc shaped objects are still being reported - theres also a few UFO reports involving the ocean and this weird one from Crane's Beach on the 17th April, 1966.

NUFORC Reports - Mass

• Crane Beach:

NICAP Massachusetts Investigating Subcommittee

The following report concerns the sighting of September 17, 1966 by Mr. and Mrs. R. M. (address deleted) Road, Ipswich, Mass. My interview was held last night, October 6, 1966, at which time I spent two hours with both parties who gave me the following story and filled out the attached forms.

The witnesses appeared to be serious, Intelligent and curious people who had seen something unusual and wanted some confirmation that they hadn't been seeing things.

The object first sighted was an elongated, cigar shape object standing on end on the beach near the water's edge. It glowed with a golden, white light, sometimes dim and then bright enough to see the sand around the base. It appeared to tilt to about a 60°angle from the vertical at times but they never did observe it leaving the area. It just appeared to disappear as it became light outside. One feature of this object was what appeared to be a dotted line effect extending from the middle to the ground at about a 45° angle. The description indicated what might be considered a ladder leaning against the object. The height of the object from the house appeared to be about 6" which would relate to something +/- 500 feet tall at that distance.

This object was observed for over one hour. During the observation period, two bright lights were observed above the beach moving toward the vertical light. These spots were about the size of peas and moved with a skipping motion, sometimes fast, sometimes slowly. They came together at the top of the vertical object, but as they joined, there appeared to be three lights instead of the original two. These lights then left the large object from time to time, ranging low over the water, disappearing at times behind the hills at Crane's Beach. One object, elliptical in shape, dark except for a faint glow that revealed its outline, moved low over the water toward the house. It moved to within one-quarter mile of the house and disappeared behind a small island in front of the house.

Mr. and Mrs. M. never did see the object leave, but they didn't go out to the island the next day to investigate nor did they go to Crane's Beach to look for tracks. Mrs. M. did call the Coast Guard the next day to see if there were helicopters flying that morning looking for the cruiser that had disappeared that week. The answer to her question was that nothing was flying at that time.

I think is the same object the Hills saw and also what is in that drawing.
Here you see the extended "bat wings" on the sides, that don't have the lights showing from them yet, and the bank of dark windows, too.

Scepticide, very good point there mate and the Hill object really does look to resemble the object the police officers witnessed on the 19th of April - particularly with their description of red lights on either end.

Apparently it was 'so low you could see the oval shape of the object' and the officers thought they were going to 'look in the window and see something extraordinary' because they were 'that close'.

The object is described as hovering and soaring with no wings, tails or propellers and about the size of an automobile - they also stated they were dumbfounded and the sight was 'actually unbelievable'.

The UFO was reported to have a red light in front and a red light to the rear of it with what appeared to be illuminated white lights the whole length of it ('it looked like a long strip of glass and you could see the curvature of the glass').

Also found it interesting that Intelligence officers from Hanscom AFB ordered Police Chief Albert Horan to 'say no more on this and future incidents' and to start a separate non public log.

Similar case here mate from Red Bluff, California in August, 1960 - police witnesses also describe red lights on either end and state the object's flight characteristics were 'actually unbelievable'.

qk5fa81bfe.gif

At this time it was clearly visible to both of us. It was surrounded by a glow making the round or oblong object visible. At each end, or each side of the object, there were definite red lights. At times about five white lights were visible between the red lights. As we watched the object moved again and performed aerial feats that were actually unbelievable.

Also some relevant descriptions from the rash of police sightings the month before in Michigan - police officers there also reported UFOs with 'lights on either end'.

Officer Robert Hartwell of the Dexter Police Department saw a luminous object buzz his car. Robert Taylor, Dexter Police Chief, and Patrolman N.G. Lee came to the farm in response to Mrs. Mannor's call and heard the noise. Taylor said he watched an object in the field from Frank Mannor's home on a knoll overlooking the area. It appeared as a pulsating red, glowing object. Through binoculars he saw "a light on each end of the thing.

Police Officer Nel Scheider's sketch in this animated sequence also looks a bit freaky and would dearly love to know what the object witnessed by Frank Manor and his son actually was.

He said it appeared to be brown, with a "quilted'' effect on the surface. It was flat on the bottom and cone-shaped toward the top, with two small lights on the outer edges emitting a glowing blue-green color that intensified and turned red at times. When it became brightly lit, the entire object was light yellow, with the light running horizontally between the two outer running lights.

Hi Karl, great stuff as usual mate in highlighting some of these old cases. And the way that you present your offerings by means of localising reports , and concentrating on certain aspects of the phenomenon for better consideration is truly awesome my old friend. ... and i'm hopeful that this is the correct pathway for a future student polymath to follow in order to see the whole picture far clearer than I ever could. .. And though not given quite the celebrity of the Portage County incident [just 5 days prior] the Massachusetts flap of 1966 that you present is certainly a worthy case for inclusion in that category.
By the way matey, just a side note is that I can never here the words UFO and Massachusetts without immediately thinking about the Salem Coast Guard Shel Alpert UFO picture of 1952...

UFO_salem1952_060408.jpg

I know it is not one of the 'best' UFO photos [although must be one of the most famous] and has been around for such a long time relatively unchallenged... but has in modern times been 'retrospectively debunked' as being simply "lights being reflected on a window". ... which I believe is not such a bad call... but then when taking into account that this explanation [debunk] would have to include that Mr. Shel Alpert, a USCG seaman on duty in the Salem Coast Guard was actively perpetrating a hoax for a little fame and publicity, which is something that he always denied? ... and then there's the fact that the Salem picture also puts me in mind of the Lubbock Lights photo from a year beforehand by Carl Hart ...

lubbocklights1.jpg

... and though this picture that was not debunked by the boffins at Wright-Patterson and also later by Blue Book I feel it has the same ambience as the Salem picture. ... but with this one, there is a bit of corroboration by the bunch of Texas Tech professors that had witnessed the lights first hand ... [with the caveat that they were in the U formation rather than the V formation in the photo when they saw them] ... which makes me lean toward both of these pictures being genuine. .. don't know about you mate?
Anyway great stuff Karl.

Cheers Buddy.

Full Report
Of the 35 photographic cases examined by the Condon Committee (pp.168-9), only two were judged to be “first priority” — having potential value in establishing the existence of “flying saucers.” One was the so-called Calgary case with its two photos. Dr. Hynek, who subjected the original negatives to exhaustive lab tests, called the first photo (above) the “best Daylight Disc photograph I have personally investigated.” Fifty miles southwest of his home in Calgary, Alberta, Warren Smith and two friends were returning from a weekend prospecting trip through rugged “bush” country on July 3, 1967. At about 5:30 PM the youngest of the group pointed to what at first all thought was an airplane. It was some two miles away at about 2000 feet — but losing altitude fast, as if headed for a crash. As it traveled toward them, they noticed it had no wings. “…It passed slightly out of view behind some trees,
From Betty & Barney Hill's account:
Through binoculars, Barney observed what he reasoned was a commercial airliner traveling toward Vermont on its way to Montreal. However, he soon changed his mind, because without looking as if it had turned, the craft rapidly descended in his direction. This observation caused Barney to realize, "this object that was a plane was not a plane."
"...Approximately one mile south of Indian Head, they said, the object rapidly descended toward their vehicle, causing Barney to stop in the middle of the highway. "

(CONTINUED):
...went Smith’s deposition, to which he swore under the Canada Evidence Act, “…then reappeared and hovered in the open sky, and something of a much smaller size fell from the craft.” In the 25 seconds the object was in view, Smith remember the loaded camea in his pack. “I … took two pictures of this strange craft and swear… no other humans were in that area” and “no camera tricker” was involved, he stated. The object was described as circular, shiny, and about 25 feet wide. Arrows point to a small cloud formation virtually unchanged in both photos, proof of Smith’s claim that the shots had been taken only seconds apart. Hynek, who flew over the site with Smith, found no evidence of a hoax in his investigation.

localising reports and concentrating on certain aspects of the phenomenon for better consideration

Certainly a very curious series of similar, localised sightings my friend and (as usually happens) the more you look the more you find - have highlighted a few NICAP reports for Massachusetts around that timeframe and there really is some weird stuff being described (including objects with red lights on either end)

April 9, 1966; Westport, MA
Time not reported. An unidentified object approached a car from behind, hovered over it, moved ahead, and ascended vertically out of sight. (NICAP notes.)

April 12, 1966; Dorchester, MA
7:45 p.m. EST. Witnesses reported a low-flying oval object with dome on top and colored lights around its perimeter, circling over a schoolhouse and bobbing up and down. Coincident power failure (EM effects) in nearby Roxbury. (Fowler 1974, p. 337; Boston Record American, Apr. 13, 1966, quoted in Flying Saucer Review, 12(4), pp. iii-iv.)

April 12, 1966; Brockton, MA
10:00 p.m. EST. An elongated elliptical (or cigar-like) object with a bright red-orange light at each end was seen hovering off Route 24. (Fowler, 1974, p. 337.)

April 16, 1966; Sherborn, MA
7:55 p.m. EST. An elongated elliptical object with bright red light on each end and blue lights along its perimeter was seen hovering off Route 16. [Compare to April 12, Brockton, Mass., sighting.] (Fowler, 1974, p. 337.)

April 17, 1966; Danvers, MA
7:15 p.m. EST. Several groups of witnesses reported an elliptical object with rotating white lights around its perimeter. The object circled slowly, then disappeared into clouds. (Fowler 1974, p. 337.)

April 17, 1966; Peabody, MA
7:30-7:45 p.m. EST. Fifteen minutes later 5 miles south of Danvers, a series of sightings was reported by independent witnesses. An oval object with dome on top, and red, green, blue, and white flashing body lights, was seen flying in circular and zigzag patterns. The object suddenly darted away at high speed and disappeared. One UFO hovered over a school, then moved away rapidly with up and down oscillatory motion. (Fowler 1974, p. 338.)

April 17, 1966; Wakefield, MA
8:30 p.m. EST. About 9 miles southwest of Peabody, witnesses reported an oval object making a humming sound. It bobbed up and down rapidly and emitted white, red, and blue light beams as it descended to low level above Lake Quannapowitt. (Fowler 1974, p. 338.)

April 18, 1966; Peabody, MA
7:15 p.m. EST. Several witnesses reported an oval object with blue glow, reddish-green flashing lights on each end. The object hovered, and sped back and forth several times. (Fowler 1974, p. 338.)

April 18, 1966; Cohasset, MA
9:45 p.m. EST. About 25 miles southeast of I Peabody, witnesses reported an oval object with flashing red lights around its circumference, and two smaller white body lights. The object reacted to searchlights (light reaction) shone on it by zigzagging, accelerating straight up and disappearing. (Fowler 1974, p. 339.)

April 19, 1966; Sharon, MA
12:15 a.m. EST. Citizens and police called to the scene to investigate saw an oval or egg-shaped object with a glowing rim that looked like lighted windows, and a steady red light on each end. The object hovered, then disappeared when an aircraft approached (aircraft avoidance), reappearing after it left. (Fowler 1974, pp. 128-130, 340; NICAP report.)

April 19, 1966; Peabody, MA
12:00 p.m. EST. On the north-northeast side of the Boston metroplex, witnesses reported an oval object with red, green, and white body lights, oscillating up and down when in motion. The object appeared to land in a field. Later two witnesses approached the field and saw unidentified lights rise and fly away. (Fowler, 1974, p. 339.)

April 19, 1966; Bellingham, MA
10:00 p.m. EST. Two hours later about 80 miles east-northeast of Hartford, an elongated elliptical object with bright red lights on each end flew low, hovered, and made a hissing sound when moving. A separate report was received of a "piercing, humming object" two hours earlier at Stoughton. (Massachusetts NICAP Subcommittee report; Fowler 1974, p. 339)

April 19, 1966; Quincy, MA
11:45 p.m. EST. Several persons saw a large disc-shaped object accompanied by two smaller discs that flashed red and white lights, hovered and swung back and forth like a pendulum. (Fowler 1974, p. 339.) [Note: Bellingham, Cohasset, Quincy, Sharon, and Stoughton, Mass., all are within about a 30-mile radius of Boston, in an arc from the southeast to the southwest.]

April 22, 1966; Halifax, MA
Time not reported. About 60 miles south of Beverly, three women saw a round object with colored blinking body lights pace above and ahead of heir car. A low humming sound was heard. (NICAP report form.)

April 22, 1966; Springfield, MA
Time not reported. About 110 miles west-southwest of Beverly, a teacher and a boy saw a dome-shaped object with three lights on its underside hover, then accelerate away. (NICAP report form.)

April 22, 1966; Beverly, MA
9:00 p.m. EST. Police and citizens saw three oval or elliptical objects flashing blue, green, red, and white lights circling low over the local high school. A humming sound was heard. When one of the witnesses raised her hands as if beckoning, one of the objects left the group and approached three witnesses, hovering above them at tree-top height. (Fowler 1974, pp. 130-36, 340; Massachusetts NICAP Subcommittee report; McDonald, 1967, Case 5, reprinted in Vaughan, 1995, pp. 204-205.)

April 22, 1966; Beverly, MA (BBU)
9-9:45 p.m. Witnesses including 2 policemen spread over a distance of saw a platter shaped object the size of a large automobile, with 3 red-green-white lights, no sound, hover over Beverly High School then depart to the SW. At one point witnesses saw the object only 20-30 ft over the head of another witness. (Hynek UFO Exp ch. 8, case CEI-5; cf. Condon Rpt Case 6)

April 22, 1966; Wenham, MA
9:30 p.m. EST. Several witnesses at a college saw an orange circular object approach to within 600 feet at about 100 feet altitude. The object made a right angle turn and moved out of sight behind trees. (Fowler 1974, p. 340.) [Note: There are two towns named Wenham, one north and one south of Boston.]

April 23, 1966; Randolph, MA
8:40 p.m. EDT. Police and others in a rural lake area sighted an "elongated egg-shaped" (elliptical) object with white lights around its perimeter, colored flashing lights on its underside. (Fowler 1974, p. 340.)

April 23/24,1966; Dorchester, MA
10:30 p.m. EST. Members of a family about 13 miles north of Randolph, Mass., saw a disc with dome on top and blinking red lights around the edge, and a brilliant yellow light on top of the dome, bobbing up and down as it moved. The yellow light blinked or flashed alternately with the red lights. The object stopped, hovering over a building. After a while it approached the family's apartment building and maneuvered between it and the adjacent building, emitting a humming sound. It hovered again briefly at the end of the alley, then moved away erratically to the east and disappeared. The same or an identical object was seen again several hours

April 24, 1966; Dorchester, MA
5:00 a.m. EDT. The same family as in the previous entry saw an identical oval or discoid object with dome and yellow light on top and red lights around the edge. flashing in the same pattern as the night before. The object emitted a humming sound and "weird, whirring, mechanical noises" as it bobbed around apparently close to the building. An explosive sound was heard, the windows rattled and furniture shook, and the lights went out. The family German shepherd dog whined and scratched at the door (animal reaction). The start of a power failure, which affected about 2,500 homes in the area, was officially timed at 4:57 a.m. It was later attributed to a breakdown in the insulation of the wiring at a point very near the apartment building. Later that evening investigators detected some abnormal radiation on the window sill where the object had been seen. (Keyhoe & Lore, 1969b, pp. 45-47; Walter N. Webb investigation report; U.F.O. Investigator, Vol. Ill, No. 8, May-June 1966, pp. 7-8; Fowler 1974, p. 340.)

April 24, 1966; Ashby, MA (BBU)
6:10 p.m. 2 men saw a silent object with a bright blue light on top dive within 100 ft of their car, then suddenly accelerate, and was lost to sight toward Mt. Watatic. (Vallée Magonia 765)

May 1, 1966; Watertown, MA
10:00 p.m. EDT. Four witnesses saw an oval object with bright rotating red, green, and white lights pass over the Watertown Arsenal. (Fowler 1974, p. 341)

June11, 1966; Westport, MA
3:45 a.m. EDT. A disc shaped like two plates one on top of the other, with a dome on top, white, yellow, blue, and green flashing lights around the circumference (body lights), buzzed over a car and hovered ahead over the road. (Fowler, 1974, p. 341; Boston Traveler, June 13, 1966, quoted in Flying Saucer Review, Vol. 12, No. 5, Sept.-Oct. 1966, p. 30.)

It's been conservatively guesstimated that only 1 in 10 people actually submit UFO reports (I know I didn't) so really do wonder just how many UFO witnesses are actually out there.

There also seems to be some sort of 'flap' every year throughout the 60s and 70s depending on where you look and the number of similarities in reports throughout November 1957 are also pretty mindboggling:

And though not given quite the celebrity of the Portage County incident [just 5 days prior]

Mate that's one of my favourite cases with a highly questionable government investigation and resulting 'force fit' explanation - considering certain facts involved (and close range police testimony from multiple officers) I have a really hard time buying the Venus debunk.

Apparently there was another strange UFO sightng by three municipal workers and a policeman in Western Michigan on the same day as Portage and a similar police UFO pursuit in Ohio 10 days earlier (UFO also departed vertically like in the Portage case).

Karl 12, you mention your encounter and not filing a report; could you post a link to your experience? I agree 100% about number of experiences not reported. I think we and others here on the forum have a very similar take on the phenomenon, and have come to conclusions by independently looking at the information = really great!

Hola mate, no link to post but one of the images below looks a lot like the sighting I had with a friend in the mountains of Spain a few years ago (zig zaggy light one) -have no idea what it was but it covered a huge distance of sky in a very short time and seemed to give off luminescence each time it turned - looked more organic than anything else.

Also this one from Greensburg, Pennsylvania on September 3rd, 1987 (flanked by bright flashing red lights on either end).

The elongated construct appeared to be a solid craft with a silver or dull gray surface. Moving at about fifty to sixty miles an hour, no sound was discernible. The object was quite low and moving about three hundred feet above the ground. The entire object had many brilliant blinking lights that were white in color, flanked by bright flashing red lights on each end.
