Diminishing Quality of Food & Products

I had a similar situation concerning potato salad. The nearby grocery store doesn’t cook the potatoes long enough. The cut up potatoes are hard as a rock most times. I told the deli manager about the problem. She gave me that look that said, “what do you expect me to do about it?”

If it weren’t a hassle, I would take the container back and make her taste them. My wife said she will make a batch the next time and see how it goes.

A couple years ago or so I bought this pepper brand and the container held 5 ounces of pepper...A couple days ago I bought another container of the same pepper, seemingly in the same type container however the size held was only 4 ounces this time...I don't know the price I paid years ago to compare prices but definitely a diminished size and I can only assume that I paid the same price as before or perhaps more...

Remember when ice cream containers were 64 ounces? Think again these days. 48 ounces is your standard container. When you say a half gallon of ice cream that is how companies have shaded things.

I was a bit bothered by this story about British meat:

UK meat industry hopeful for extension of 10-day shelf-life rule after safety risk study

The current Food Standards Agency guidance calls for refrigerated beef to have a shelf life of no more than 10 days. The FSA has seemingly given their assent however to an extension to 21 days after an industry-backed study purports to have shown that it is safe.

I have had some beef reeking pretty badly a day or two before the current use-by date.

Maybe they could go to twelve days first, as a precaution, and see how that goes, rather than doubling it right away?

I opened a package of cooked and sliced ham recently, in only 4 days it turned and did not smell good, I had to throw away what was left...It had a date of September 22nd on it and kept wrapped in foil and refrigerated...

I'm growing watermelon this year my garden and I've already eaten one, the first one that I picked out of the garden and it had so much flavor and sweetness to it, it was absolutely delicious...There are 13 more of them growing in my garden but not ready yet, so with a craving for watermelon still I went ahead and bought one from the store and I'm currently eating a slice of it right now... It is nothing like the watermelon I grew in my garden, this store bought watermelon that was grown in Delaware has hardly any flavor to it and is barely sweet at all, oh it's very juicy but basically taste like I'm eating a watered down melon...

It's much the same with store-bought, as opposed to proper, tomatoes and other fruits. Industrial fruit growers and sellers of industrially grown fruit might choose adjectives like 'juicy' or 'plump' to describe these fruits when what they mean is that they have been cultivated and grown to give an added water content which is usually at the expense of flavour. If you increase the water weight, you can still call that added weight part of the fruit and charge for it. They attempted to do that in this country with chicken also, by injecting water into the meat, so that they could charge more for this extra 'chicken' that you were getting.

Instead of producing quality foods that allow us to live a healthier life, the food industry are now principally reducing their standards in order to produce more foods than we will ever need and so much tossed away and wasted...Of course there are food outlets and sources that provide high quality foods, but those come with much higher selling prices and labeled in such a way to erroneously display themes something special when those higher quality foods should be the standard...

Watched this video the other day on food standards in the USA and why British Eggs are banned in the USA and vice versa.

Very interesting!:

Apparently now the US government is deregulating the safety inspections of eggs, leaving more of the responsibility to the businesses...

...

New Government Ruling Is Reducing Safety Regulations of This One Food

Last month, we reported about deregulations in the meat industry, which directly impacted the quality and health of chickens that food companies use in meat production. Now, due to a similar rollback of safety measures in the egg industry, the staple food product may end up being less safe for human consumption.

Dog food prices have been going up exponentially the past 3 to 5 months, especially the canned food and snacks like chicken strips...The kibble prices have slightly increased but not as much...I purchase higher end quality food for my dog though, so the cheaper brands may or may not have increased in price, I don't know about those...

I lost my big dogs last year and I had been buying a brand of dog food for 51.00 that came in a 35 pound bag. I just got a new dog and bought a bag of the same dog food for the same price and it is in a 25 pound bag. It is hard to find dog food that does not make the dogs sick. I read the labels and find that most of them have ingredients like grains, soy, chicken by product, and peas that cause illness in dogs. When I had a very old dog I cooked him stew because I couldn't find a dog food he could keep down. It cost a little more but I ate the stew sometimes myself. I would go go whole foods every week and buy 3 pounds of grass fed beef and have them cut it up for stew meat because the same meat sold as stew meat was a dollar more a pound. I did put potatoes in the stew because the dog was under weight and that is one thing that will fatten up a dog fast. It probably isn't that healthy for them though. When I got more dogs it was too expensive to make the stew for them so I had to find a dog food that didn't make them sick.

Our cat eats wet canned foot and cat treats. She is very particular about what she eats. The brand of wet food is becoming impossible to find. The prices have skyrocketed as well. I had to order from Amazon just to have the stuff on hand. Once an animal is locked into what they like, good luck in getting them to eat something else.

Yeah my dog likes certain brands and flavours of canned food that he's eaten since he was young, I raised him since 8 weeks...I've introduced some variety with mixed results, some new flavours he likes once or twice and won't touch again and other flavours he doesn't like from the start...So now I kind of stick with the canned food he likes the best which currently I'm paying about three and half dollars per can for it...Before the pandemic those cans were a dollar cheaper...

The kibble has gone up in price too but not as much as canned food and my dog likes three different brands so he gets a variety of kibble...He usually gets kibble in the morning and canned food in the late afternoon for dinner...

I also cook most all my meals and most times he eats what I cook too in smaller quantities, veggies and meats I eat he also eats, he likes carrots and potatoes and fresh apples and he also loves blueberries lol...If I grill a steak or burgers for myself I grill one for him, when I eat an apple he gets about a third of it lol...If he eats my food I adjust his food accordingly so I'm not over feeding him...

I haven't been pleased with the look of beef and pork lately in the local grocers, something about the colour of the meat isn't appealing to me, I just get this sense not to buy it...I'm going to drive to the city tomorrow and make some comparisons of meats with the organic grocer they have, to see how their meats are compared to what I've been seeing locally...

I order my pet food from Chewy.com, better prices usually. You do have to order a larger amount but it works out better for me. @Standingstones you might find better prices at chewy.com.

My daughter has two very finicky pets, a dog and a cat. They will only eat a specific brand of food. My cat prefers some food over others but she will eventually eat what ever I give her. The small dog has no teeth but prefers certain flavors of food and eats better when I warm it up. The puppy eats what ever I give her and will clean the other two bowls if she can get to them.
