The shadow

The shadow knows!
One more species is gone..
The end of an era ..

The northern white rhino which survived 55 million years and saw ice ages, earthquakes, meteor strikes and was testament to innumerable historical changes on the planet could not survive humans.

The great beast is now functionally extinct.

With the passing away of the last male northern white rhino there are now just two female northern white rhino alive. Despite best efforts at artificial reproduction, no success has been achieved.

It is a matter of time before this magnificent sub-species disappears into oblivion.

Nature mourns ❤

Russia issues violent warning to protect sea borders against intrusion

Russia will be ready to fire to hit to protect its borders, a senior diplomat warned Thursday in the wake of a Black Sea incident in which a British destroyer sailed near Crimea in an area that Russia claims as its territorial waters.

Russia said one of its warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs in the path of British destroyer Defender Wednesday to drive it away from the area near Sevastopol, but Britain denied that account and insisted its ship wasn’t fired upon.

The incident marked the first time since the Cold War that Moscow acknowledged using live ammunition to deter a NATO warship, underlining the rising threat of military collisions amid Russia-West tensions.

Russia's Deputy Defense Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Thursday that "the inviolability of the Russian borders is an absolute imperative," adding that it will be protected "by all means, diplomatic, political and military if needed."

Asked what Russia would do to prevent such intrusions in the future, Ryabkov told reporters it would stand ready to fire on target if warnings don't work.

Such a violent warning HMS Defender failed to notice.

An Su-24 eh? The newest one of those is 30 years old. The Russians should be thankful the Brits failed to react because they'd be floating debris in less than a minute. Here's a recent example of Russian brown water navy skill:

New York City Mayor de Blasio mocked for tweet on 'bright' future of Big Apple amid city's crime wave

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is getting dragged on Twitter for bragging about enjoying the Big Apple’s summer weather as violent crime soars and residents are moving out in droves.

"The future of New York City is so bright I gotta wear shades!" the progressive politician tweeted, days after city primary voters appear to have rejected his legacy by choosing a moderate, ex-NYPD captain as their next likely mayoral candidate. (The primary vote is not fully tabulated, with the city's new ranked-choice votes not yet counted.)

It was de Blasio's second attempt on the subject, after deleting a similar tweet and being mocked over the reflection of what appeared to be a woman's T-shirted chest reflected in his mirrored sunglasses.

"The future isn’t so bright for these kids," one Twitter user replied, linking to a news story about a horrific daylight shooting in which a masked gunman murdered a man on a public street just inches away from two terrified children. "But for a pompous blowhard like you, I’m sure it’s great."

Dirt bikers pummel Brooklyn postal worker, disturbing video shows

(Video on the link)

A pair of dirt bikers pummeled a postman this week on a busy Brooklyn street, new video released by cops shows.

The 57-year-old USPS mail carrier was on his route in Greenpoint, pushing his cart, around 6 p.m. Monday, when the duo attempted to block his path as he crossed the street — sparking an argument, police said.

The victim continued walking, but the pair came up behind him at McGuinness Boulevard and Nassau Avenue, cops said. He is shown on surveillance footage raising his fist in anticipation as the first suspect came up from behind and started punching and kicking him.

As the postman fought back, the second biker pulled up and began to attack him, the clip shows. Two bystanders stepped in to stop the assault, according to the footage. The suspects then fled south on McGuinness Boulevard on their bikes, cops said.

I'm sorry but this isn't Jeff Bezos' problem, she should live somewhere less expensive if she cannot afford the rent or find a better job that pays more...Does she drive an expensive car?...Is she making large payments for the car or is it paid off?...

...

An Amazon worker says she's homeless because she can't afford NYC rent with the $19 she's paid per hour

An Amazon employee who works at the company's warehouse on Staten Island in New York City says she lives in her car in the building's parking lot because she can't afford rent in the city with the $19.30 she makes per hour, Vice News reported Friday.

The woman, Natalie Monarrez, has been homeless since 2019 after struggling to find affordable permanent housing while working for two other Amazon warehouses in New Jersey that paid her even less, according to Vice.

"Jeff Bezos donates to homeless shelters for tax write-offs and PR. He needs to know that some of his own workers (without family or a second income) can't afford rent," Monarrez told Vice.

"Jeff Bezos has no idea that his workers are homeless, especially in New York, and I'm not the only one. I'm hoping executives will agree to pay workers more and that they know older workers have the right to be promoted like everyone else," she added.

While rents in New York City have fallen about 12 percent since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, it remains one of the most expensive places to live in the country. The median asking rent for a one bedroom in New York City in June was about $2500, according to a Zumper analysis.

19.30 an hour does not sound like a living wage in NY city. It is barely a living wage in Albuquerque. Nivek, I don't think there is any housing that you could rent when your wages are that low. It is expensive to live in NY City, just like L.A. and other large cities.

True and I agree but she may be making more than others who do the same function in different areas. Amazon employment sounds a short hop from being a galley slave - no matter where you live it's got to be hard to make enough from them to live on.

That's more an hour than my oldest daughter makes in Indiana where we live...granted we live in the midwest and she has a rent free home that my parents owned which is paid for.
But....I'm not sure it's Bezos obligation to make sure people make enough to live wherever they want. Life is unfair sometimes...but we simply can't change everything all the time to suit everyone's problems. The world is not perfect.
