Here's what I'm still partly on the fence about. Yes, the buck stops with the Commander-in-Chief. But is it all Biden? Was Biden getting sharp tactical and logistical advice ahead of time, but flat out rejected it? Or were many of the advisors giving him erroneous projections, either because they were dimwitted, or felt they had to tell him what he wanted to hear?

This guy may be partisan, but his observations seem unassailable commonsense:
Nathan Sales, the former ambassador-at-large for counterterrorism under former President Trump, told Fox News in an exclusive interview that Biden's "most important misstep" was the decision to leave the Bagram Air Base, which is more remote and in a better location to aid evacuation efforts.

"One of the most important and mistaken decisions that President Biden made was to withdraw from Bagram Air Base. Bagram Air Base is 30 or so miles north of the capital. It was a military facility. It was indeed the heart of American counterterrorism efforts in Afghanistan for years. It would have been a far better alternative for carrying out the evacuation that is now going on," Sales said.

Trump counterterrorism official outlines Biden's 'missteps' leading to deadly Kabul bombings

Did not those advising Biden not perceive the wisdom of proceeding the way Sales suggested, or did Biden just poo poo what they had to say? And if the latter, Why? Biden was never a military commander. I've also never heard of him being a scholar of military history or tactics. Why wouldn't he simply ask ahead of time for the best possible withdrawal plan, and then order that optimal plan executed once it had been developed?

Biden could have been getting everyone out of the country back in February this year instead of simply extending the deadline in April, he could have had most people out by April...

...

Total cock-up.

Biden had all the time & resources to make an orderly withdrawal. How can things be so disorganised?

ISIS claim responsibility for devastating attacks in Kabul that have killed at least 72 - including 12 US troops

upload_2021-8-26_17-17-49.png

ISIS have claimed responsibility for devastating twin attacks that struck Kabul, killing at least 72 people. The group posted a statement claiming responsibility from their Telegram account on Thursday, following the attacks earlier today.

The two explosions, one of which hit Kabul airport's Abbey Gate, the other the Baron Hotel, had been blamed on ISIS-K, a regional affiliate of the so-called Islamic State that operates in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Abdul Rehman Al-Loghri of ISIS-K was the suicide bomber responsible for the blast at Abbey Gate, according to ISIS. The Gate is manned by US and UK troops. The blasts killed at least 72 people, including 12 US servicemen, and injured more than 140 more, according to official sources. On Thursday evening, a CBS reporter based in Afghanistan posted on Twitter that the death toll had risen to 90, with 150 people injured.

Joe's nightmare scenario on whether to strike ISIS-K or still pull troops by August 31: Does Biden risk more American lives staying to hunt terrorists already behind 250 attacks on the US or leave citizens and allies helpless in Kabul?

upload_2021-8-26_17-23-48.png

The attacks that killed at least 12 U.S. troops outside Kabul airport on Thursday left President Joe Biden facing the decision of his presidency: Extend his August deadline and risk more deaths by going after the terrorists behind the killings, or bring the date forward and leave behind a growing security threat.

He spent the day hunkered down with his national security team preparing for a 5pm address to the nation. The White House tore up his schedule, postponing a first in-person meeting with Israel's new prime minister and canceling a video conference with governors about Afghan refugees arriving in their states.

Instead, people who knew the situation room well said he would have to decide on the future of the evacuation program and whether to launch strikes on the group behind the attacks. Delaying his departure comes with risks, but leaving too seen could mean 1000 Americans abandoned.

How the bomb attack on Kabul airport unfolded: ISIS-K suicide bomber slipped past Taliban checkpoint to kill 13 US troops as second blast targeted hotel used as screening point for Americans and Britons

upload_2021-8-26_18-28-51.png

Early details are emerging of the ISIS-K attack that killed 13 US troops and at least 60 Afghan civilians, as the Pentagon reveals a suicide bomber slipped past a Taliban checkpoint to get close to US Marines conducting screening at the Kabul airport. Exact sequence of events in the attack remains unclear, with the Pentagon calling it 'complex' and admitting that key details about the types and sizes of the bombs, and number of attackers, remain unknown. The two locations targeted in the bombings were the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport, where US troops were screening Afghans for evacuation, and the nearby Baron Hotel, where many people, including Afghans, Britons and Americans, were told to gather in recent days before heading to the airport for evacuation.

I think Biden has excellent advice available from the Pentagon staff but he refuses to listen. Then when he speaks at press briefings it just feels really awkward. Like when he tried to be slick and joke around with Peter Doocy of Fox News. It was just hair-sniffing creepy.

I just saw that, I'm really worried about my nephew now, we don't know how he's doing, haven't heard from him...

I understand the premise behind providing a list of Americans in the country to the Taliban, but I just don't consider them trustworthy.
Biden doesn't deny report of US handing over names of Americans to Taliban: 'There may have been'

Biden was responding to a Politico report, confirmed by Fox News, that U.S. officials in Kabul gave the Taliban a list of American citizens, green card holders, and Afghan allies in an effort to grant them entry to the airport which resulted in outrage from military officials behind the scenes.

Biden was widely criticized over the report with many disgruntled social media users referring to the list as a "kill list."

President Biden says he was 'instructed' to call on reporters from list at presser following Kabul attacks

That is insane, yeah that is a hit list for sure, what the hell is this administration thinking by providing a list for the enemy to kill, you know the Afghan allies on that list are done for...So how much information is on this list?...Photos maybe along with the names and ages?...

I don't understand this logic at all, giving a list of our people and allies who are stranded behind enemy lines to those enemies...

Afghanistan's economy in crisis after Taliban take-over

The Taliban is not competent to run the country that it has just re-conquered. It lacks the educated and experienced people required to run a country such as Afghanistan has become in the 20 years since it was deposed from power. More than 40% of its GDP was from foreign aid that is now frozen. The country faces an imminent economic collapse that could arise in as little as a few weeks. The Taliban will find it more difficult to keep control than it was to take control, and its grip on power may falter. That is not to say that what comes next will not be even worse, it could well be.

The Taliban will be making money from opium, but I doubt they could make enough to keep the Afghan economy afloat, I don't know...

Britain could be facing 'the biggest hostage crisis it has ever seen': Fury after UK admits Brits and 1,100 eligible Afghans will be left behind when Kabul evacuations stop 'in a matter of hours'

964x580_JPG-SINGLE_2837303487059083748.jpg

Senior Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat said Britain's decision to largely end processing new evacuees means 'many' will now not get out and could mean the UK faces the 'biggest hostage crisis'. It comes after Britain's Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said on Friday said the UK mission in Kabul is in its 'final hours' after closing the main processing centre in Baron Hotel near the airport. The effort would now focus on evacuating British nationals and others who have already been cleared to leave and are already at the airport, the Defence ministry said. Mr Wallace said: 'We will process the people that we've brought with us, the 1,000 people approximately in the airfield now and we will seek a way to continue to find a few people in the crowds where we can, but overall the main processing is now closed and we have a matter of hours.'

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden promised on Thursday to hunt down and destroy the ISIS-K terrorists who killed 13 American service personnel and dozens of Afghans in a double suicide attack on Kabul airport. He made the retaliation threat last night as he joined Boris Johnson in vowing to continue the evacuation efforts despite a 'continued' risk of further bombings by the terrorist group which is an enemy of the Taliban who are in control of the country. The jihadist group, an off-shoot of the terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS), last night claimed responsibility for double bombing, which is believed to have killed at least 90 people and injured more than 150 others.
