'Get ready Russia,' the 'missiles are coming!'

Trump makes Twitter threat to Putin and 'gas killing animal' Assad after Kremlin vows to shoot down any missiles fired at Syria and attack US ships.

The last few hours have seen a dramatic ratcheting of tensions in the Middle East where Russian forces are propping up dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria and American forces are backing some of his opponents.

The US military appeared to be in position to carry out any attack order this morning (main) with a Navy destroyer - armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles - underway in the eastern Mediterranean.

Deadly S-400 anti-aircraft missile 'ring of steel' protects Assad:

US fears network of air defenses that can shoot down 80 planes at once from 248 miles away and is 'one of the most feared weapons in the world'

Russia has vowed to shoot down any US missiles aimed at Syria using its lethal anti-aircraft system amid mounting tensions between Moscow and Washington.

Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime is protected by fearsome S-400 defence missiles in a 'ring of steel' around the country provided by the Kremlin.

The most advanced of Russia's terrifying S-400 systems is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range missiles, and can also be used against ground objectives, according to Russia.

The S-400 was first deployed to Syria in 2015, and with its 248 mile range it is capable of providing an air cover umbrella across the majority of Syria. It is capable of shooting down up to 80 targets simultaneously and is said to be able to travel more than 10,000mph.

Russia is also hoping to sell the system to Iran and Turkey, and a successful demonstration against American hardware would only help sell the $400m per unit system.

Syrians circulate 'we love you' Trump memes, hope for U.S. intervention

ERBIL, Iraq – As President Donald Trump tweets intentions to strike in Syria following Saturday's suspected chemical weapons attack, supporters of the Syrian opposition are waiting with baited breath, enthusiastically circulating pro-Trump memes in a bid to whip up support for U.S. action.

Syrians holed up in rebel-held areas and in the larger diaspora on Wednesday circulated a new meme on social media featuring Trump’s face - overlaying an American flag - with the words “We love you,” in Arabic and English.

“We are all with Trump, we will never forget that he stands with us and save us from the hell of Russia, Iran and Assad,” Tarek Muharam 40, a leader in the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA) told Fox News. “Finally, someone smelled the smell of chemical weapons and decide to stop these massacres.”

Others supporting the Syrian opposition who spoke to Fox News conveyed similar hopes the U.S. would soon intervene.

"I hope that the strikes will be much bigger this time to target all the military and security units of regime so the Syrian people can get their stolen freedom,” said 30-year-old Amer Alfaj, who works with the Qatar Red Crescent in northern Syria.

The United States, backed by Britain and France, has said it is ready to take military action in Syria - with or without support from the United Nations Security Council.

“The U.S. must take the responsibility to lift the injustice on Syrian people,” said Yousef Obeid, 22, a medical aid worker in Al-Atareb.

Muhammad Basher, 27, a civil activist west of Aleppo, concurred. “If you want to end the Qaida and ISIS in Syria, you must overthrow Assad regime and the terror groups will be gone."

This is a good option but very risky because of Russia...

Destroying Syria’s air force is one option for Trump

Donald Trump ordered an attack on Syria a year ago in response to a chemical attack, resulting in 59 US Tomahawk cruise missiles hitting the Shayrat airbase.

Given that it failed to deter the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, and regime forces from using chemical weapons again, the US president must now decide whether to launch a more punitive strike in the wake of the suspected gas attack in Douma on Saturday.

After the Shayrat attack in April last year, the US claimed to have destroyed 20 planes – described by the defence secretary, James Mattis, as 20% of Syria’s operational air strength – and to have seriously degraded the base. Other reports challenged this, however, saying Syrian aircraft were taking off from the base only hours later.

If Trump needs to send a stronger message this time, one option is to completely destroy Syria’s air force.

Having fought against Syria regularly over the past 70 years, including frequent raids in the past two years, the Israeli air force knows Syria’s strength better than anyone else.

Reuven Ben-Shalom, an Israeli military analyst who spent 25 years in the Israeli Defence Forces, was reluctant to sound boastful but in the end could not help but describe Syria’s military capability as “a joke”.

To take just one indicator, Syria has 15,000 personnel in its air force, according to the Military Balance published by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies. Israel has 34,000 and the US 316,000.

Ben-Shalom said Israel’s military superiority would ensure it could destroy the Syrian air force, and US military superiority was many times greater still.

However he added a crucial caveat: the potential confrontation was not just about military capability. “The main issue is the umbrella the Russians have given the Syrians. The Russians are inside Syria.” The US risked launching an attack that started a third world war, he said.

Not good... Not good.

United States would do well to keep out of it. If we attack Syria it would cause war with Russia. That would quickly evolve into another World War. I don't really feel like going to Syria either. I'm tired of that part of the world.

Evaluating the Russian Threat to Undersea Cables

Russians have been seen in the last few months following undersea cables with their warships. If the USA attacks Syria it could well be that while Mr Trump is going to reign down hell and brimstone with his missiles on them all Russia will cut all the cables.

It is ridiculous. Sure the Syrian situation with the recent poisons is bad, and illegal. But this is an overt misuse of power. What about Africa, what about all the other corrupt governments that have decimated their people through greed and neglect. How many kids die due to poverty in the world while their governments live the high life.

If the US is going to claim the moral high ground and risk instigating a conflict that will potentially destroy humanity, do it in the name of all injustice, overt and covert, greed and neglect. Why destroy civilization over a Putin v Trump pissing contest over a handful of tragic deaths in Syria.
I am not meaning to trivialize what has happened in Syria, but if the response sends us all back to clubs and caves, well that makes no sense to me. I don't have a solution, but conflict and a WAR with Russia is not the answer in my opinion.

I think Trump wants to hose down the bad guys .
But at the expense of humanity.??? The Syrian situation is awful. But what does an African tribesman, or a Balinese villager care. Why should they die over a pissing contest between the US and Russia.
And the US nationalists can puff their chests up all they want. But when the power grid is dead, the hospitals are gone, the supermarkets are stripped, and the police and military are no more, and their kids need basic food, water and medication that no longer is available. Well I hope they are proud of their chest puffing.
