Why is the national anthem played ? at games. When did it start

I think it started decades ago, but really I'm all for taking it out, it really isn't necessary...As long as it is the players should stand, but playing the national anthem cannot be abruptly stopped either, it would cause an uproar even more...No better to phase it out over the next 7 years whilst Trump is president...

Players were not required to stand for the anthem until 2009. It's to make the NFL seem more "patriotic". The NFL also gets a fat sum of money for doing it from the military.

The anthem itself has been played for a good amount of time before the games. But most of the players were in the locker rooms during it prior to 2009.

It has been going on in baseball for as long as baseball has been a sport, and the players have always been required to be present and stand, or kneel (practice before "the kneel") with your hat over you're heart. Maybe you were thinking of baseball?

Yeah that's probably how I remember it, I used to watch baseball more when I was younger and always saw them standing...

I assumed back then it was patriotic thing to do on national televison because of the soviets and cold war...

About 10 minutes before kick-off.

The anthem is played at sports events so we can distinguish loyal Americans from traitors.

Commie spies would sometimes screw up and not stand.

:rofl4:

Good one CB.

I say the flag gives you the right to stand or not. However if you are an NFL player, your pay check is partially paid for by the US Forces who buy the rights to advertise themselves during NFL games, and you are employed and need to follow the rules the private employer sets up beforehand. If you don't like em, quit and find another better job. Good luck with that Kaepernick.

To add, not important but worth mentioning regarding Kaepernick. This guy denies his white ethnicity too (he's bi-racial). His parents abandoned him and good-hearted white parents adopted him and took care of him. Also he sucks at QB, he just runs like a gazelle - so more a running back, not a quarterback. And he wore a Cuban Fidel Castro shirt during games once too, (in Florida) that offended many Cubans there. The guy is an idiot who was lucky to play when he did. Finally, he won his college Bowl Game senior year due to the other teams (Boise State) missing several field goals, was lucky to win there too. That helped his draft.

You brought up an excellent point which I do not think was mentioned here, the armed forces pays a lot of money for advertising for recruitment reasons throughout the NFL...

As I've said the players are getting paid for this and the NFL sets the rules, if they don't like it the get another job...Same with me or anyone else...I have left jobs before that changed and went into a direction I did not like...I didn't protest or complain about it like some of these players and the media are doing, I just find another job, simple...

this thread started in 2017, and is suddenly relevant again. nice job, nivek,

Good on them, the people spending good money to watch these sporting events should be letting these NFL players know this is a disgusting display or arrogance to take a knee during the national anthem...

Adding more insult, these players do not deserve the money they make, I will not spend one dime on anything NFL, not even for a gift...They have too much money and disrespect the country and system that they make their fortunes on...

Eagles' visit to White House canceled over national anthem dispute

The Philadelphia Eagles will not be attending a ceremony at the White House, according to a statement by President Donald Trump.

The decision comes a day before the event was to occur.

The statement says that the defending Super Bowl champions disagree "with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country."

A large group of Eagles players had decided not to attend, including most -- if not all -- of the black players, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Mr. Trump says that he will instead have a "different type of ceremony -- one that will honor our great country, pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it, and loudly and proudly play the National Anthem."

You like sports ???

Played basketball and football in high school.

Not much of an athlete but I've run a number of marathons.

Been to Caps, Redskins, Nationals, and Orioles games and at least one Wizards game.

Was a diehard Redskins fan but lost interest last year.

Well...

Might watch a game to see if they kneel. If they do I'll find something else to do on Sunday.

There is no NFL football this Sunday, its the off season?...

.

Has no one here actually left the right wing media bubble and learned WHY they kneel? It has nothing to do with the flag or anthem. It is to protest the police brutality that is easy to document and find on the internet. A Black woman gets stopped for a traffic violation and is beaten on camera. A Black kid is in his own front yard and shot to death.

You may claim there are better ways to protest blatant police bias against Blacks, but to claim it is a refutation of the flag and anthem is just a distraction offered by the right wing media to keep you up in arms about this. What SANE ETHICAL human being would support the police brutalizing a particular segment of the population simply based on skin color?

Is that really so difficult to understand?
