Civil Unrest & Protests

WTF is wrong with people? How can a cop in this day and time of cameras everywhere think he is going to get away with choking a handcuffed perp with a foot to the neck, not to mention that it's straight up wrong in the first place? Likewise, how do others think that destruction and violence are going to somehow convince the general public that they are the innocent victims here? I swear, stupidity is more dangerous than covid 19 ever could be.

They got away with it before so, why stop?

People get together like that and it only takes a few bad ones to start that mob mentality.

You know I was watching the First Purge earlier today. I was thinking this would never happen.

Then I watched some videos on Facebook of "protests" (rioting), of people literally pulling people out of cars and attacking them on highways, smashing up shops and the usual looting. Amazing what a mob mentality will do.

Also I read somewhere that the chap who was killed had quite the criminal record including holding a pregnant lady hostage, pointing a shotgun at the belly? Did it deserve a death sentance, no. I would not however hold him up as someone to "protest" over.

I saw video of police trying to force two women out of their car. The police tasered them and got fired for doing it. Excessive force is happening on both sides.

Trump is encouraging excessive force by police & national guard. What a tool.

Although there is a good reason to protest ( but not riot ). Here how these poor bastards get screwed, is they pay the rent 5-6 times higher than a rich neighborhoods.

How Poor Americans Get Exploited by Their Landlords

In an economy that is driven by scientific knowledge, a landlord is just a neandertal parasite. Property is symply a method of steling money from scientists.

People who buy on mortgage rather than rent get screwed too. If you pay off a 30 year mortgage on schedule you will pay 2-3x the purchase price. Of course, purchase prices are exorbitant because the seller usually has a 30 year mortgage of their own to pay off, thus continuing the cycle.

Yeah, I call it stealing money from scientists.

Because what really drives the growth of the economy is scientific discoveries, not the sales and so-called capitalism. Science creates both more things to sell and more methods to sell ( newspapers, TV, the Internet etc. ). Most "capitalists" are dump overpaid unskilled laborers ( and they know it, so they keep quiet about it ), and Donald Trump fits the description to a tee, since he is both dumb and uneducated. He's certainly no scientist.

Over the last 300 years, since science took over the religion, the wealth of nations increased 4,000% relative to the previous 14,000 years. In other words, in 2% of time, science nerds achieved 40 times more financial wealth, than dumb businessmen in 98% of time. So, "capitalists" have nothing to show for the first 14,000 years, but they can certainly 'fix' legal system to be able to steal the credit from scientists. If intellectual property was equal to material property, which is not by law, the market value of "businessmen" wouldn't be higher than that of a street cleaner. How can somebody who's both dumb and uneducated produce value in a knowledge-based economy? He can't.

The thing is banks are in it to make money, they're not a charity.

I purchased a house for £115,000. Took out an 80k mortgage. 35k desposit.

I had been saving since the age of 16. Purchased the house when I was 27. Repayments are £300.00 a month fixed for five years over 30 years. Lowest rent in my area is £550.00, getting towards the coast lowest would be around £750.00.

If I remember correctly, I've just about paid off the interest now.

Renting is just throwing your money away for something you will never own. I wouldn't say the banks screw people if you do your research and are smart about it.

Speaking from personal experience, a few people I know are always moaning about the cost of their rent and are always short. However these same people have the latest IPhone, top of the range car on finance, all the Sky packages (like HBO in the States however with all the Sky packages it equates to around £85.00 a month) and of cause phone contracts where they are paying £70.00 a month.

I think people not living within their means has something to also do with it as well. The "flexible friend culture" of having everything on credit is the biggest issue and of course contributed to the financial crash.

Yes banks have a responsibility to lend to those who can afford repayments but the individual also has an responsibility to be smart about it.

In the UK, The Winston Churchill statue was vandalised on Parliament Square yesterday, along with a Police office being pulled off his horse and assaulted. These sorts of acts will cause people to lose all form of sympathy with with these "protests".

Minneapolis City Council voted to abolish the city's police force in what they call a veto proof majority vote...An astonishing display of stupidity in my opinion, let the gangs and mobs take over, everything will be fine...

It probably means that the sheriff and state police will take over law enforcement in the city, with a "new" police department established at some point in the future.

So far I have only found one article in a left wing publication which acknowledges and questions the left's virus hypocrisy following the outbreak of demonstrations over the death of George Floyd.

We often accuse the right of distorting science. But the left changed the coronavirus narrative overnight | Thomas Chatterton Williams

It is currently the number two most-read article on the Guardian, but good luck finding it on the main page or even in the listings on the Opinion page. The article is, however, far from perfect.

It is not clear where the author even stands on the matter. At one point he writes "Catalyzed by the spectacle of Floyd’s reprehensible death, it is clear that the emergency in Minneapolis passes my own and many people’s threshold for justifying the risk of contagion." So we infer that he is for the demonstrations in defiance of previous advice to shelter-in-place. In the final paragraph, however, he writes
However, there is one inconvenient truth that cannot be disputed: more black Americans have been killed by three months of coronavirus than the number who have been killed by cops and vigilantes since the turn of the millennium. We may or may not be willing to accept that brutal calculus, but we are obligated, at the very least, to be honest."

There is also this
Yet even as the coronavirus lockdown threw 40 million Americans out of work – including Floyd himself – many progressives accepted this calamity, sometimes with stunning blitheness, as the necessary cost of guarding against Covid-19.

He writes this weaselly in the passive voice, but lockdowns in the US were almost universally demanded by leftists, not something foisted upon them by their beastly opponents that they acquiesced to.

He refers to the situation in Minneapolis as an "emergency". But in what sense is it an emergency? Because George Floyd was murdered by a white police officer? He has been removed from the police force and arraigned on criminal charges of murder. The only "emergency" then is the protest in response to the killing, but if this is the emergency, it is not calmed by doing the same thing everywhere else. I think the actual emergency is merely the closing window of opportunity for taking advantage of the unrest for political gain.

There is also this from Politico, but this outlet has a more neutral standpoint (and the article is referenced in the Guardian opinion piece above).

Suddenly, Public Health Officials Say Social Justice Matters More Than Social Distance

From the Politico article:

“We should always evaluate the risks and benefits of efforts to control the virus,” Jennifer Nuzzo, a Johns Hopkins epidemiologist, tweeted on Tuesday. “In this moment the public health risks of not protesting to demand an end to systemic racism greatly exceed the harms of the virus.”
Is this a scientific opinion backed by a quantitative argument? Or is she just making things up to attempt to square her political zeal with her position as a scientist? Why "in this moment"? Going by what the BLM movement is saying, the issue is long-standing and structural. They even say that what happened to George Floyd is not uncommon, so there is no immediate rational impetus for the demonstrations amidst an ongoing viral epidemic. Was Jennifer Nuzzo encouraging people to go out and "protest to demand an end to systemic racism" at the beginning of last month? Was she doing so six months ago? I don't know, but I doubt it. Was the systemic racism situation any better at those times? I also don't think so.

It seems that there are no sane and rational people remaining among the elites of the western world. Having proven themselves to be growing increasingly frivolous before the epidemic, the virus seems to have driven them completely around the bend.

Sheltie

Fratty and out of touch.
In the first few days of rioting here there were houses and apartment buildings that were set on fire. Things calmed down after that and the subsequent mayhem was all directed at businesses or symbolic targets. They tried to take the protest to a large suburban fashion mall about 10 miles outside of town but the county police blocked the entrances and made them leave.

In the early analysis it would appear that those who have suffered the most have been inner city businesses. Many of them were minority owned or oriented. Many of them were owned by political liberals. It's almost reminiscent of the 1960's riots.

Don't shoot me, I'm only the messenger.

So we are getting very "woke" apparantly now in the UK.

It has been decided that "Little Britain" and "Come Fly With Me" will no longer be shown. A number are "UK celebs" are now apologising for their comedic content and sketches in the past in which "black face" was used. I really doubt anyone in their right mind found this offensive.

Wonder when they will ban the film White Chicks?

I might move to Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary amongst other places as it's getting rather silly in the UK

Agreed!

One of the issues I have with them removing this content is that you are then wiping away history. Yes said content may no longer be deemed acceptable however to destroy the past removes it from the public conscious. How are you supposed to learn from yesterdays "mistakes" if yesterday no longer exists? Bring's George Orwell's 1984 to mind.

There are also massive double standards at play in what is acceptable as in the White Chicks example.
