DeVos calls out 'adults who are fearmongering' over school reopenings: 'Kids have got to continue learning'

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos told "Tucker Carlson Tonight" Tuesday that her department is "seriously considering" withholding federal funding from school districts that do not make a honest effort to bring students back for in-person classes this fall.

"We are looking at this very seriously, this is a very serious issue across the country," DeVos told host Tucker Carlson. "Kids have got to continue learning and schools have got to open up. There's got to be a concerted effort to address the needs of all kids, and adults who are fearmongering and making excuses simply have to stop doing it and turn their attention to what is right for them and the students and their families."

Later in the interview, DeVos told Carlson that "if nothing else, this whole coronavirus has made more and more parents aware of what's going on in their own children's schools -- or what isn't going on.

The days of online classrooms are upon us. DeVos is thinking in old school terms. My guess is sitting in a large school room is going the way of retail stores.

America sets grim new covid record with 60,000 new cases in a single day, bringing total to nearly 3 MILLION - as California and Texas shatter previous daily tolls for infections

The United States has set a grim record of more than 60,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day - as the total number of positive infections across the country neared 3 million. Just over 60,000 new cases were reported in 24 hours on Tuesday, up from the previous record of 53,600 infections set last Thursday. The number of cases across the US now nears 3 million and more than 131,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic took hold in March. National deaths from COVID-19 increased by just over 1,100 on Tuesday. Despite the daily spike, deaths across the country have on average been trending downwards. California, Hawaii, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas on Tuesday shattered their previous daily record highs for new cases. The biggest jumps occurred in Texas and California, the two largest US states, with more than 10,000 each.

Donald Trump claims Dr. Fauci is WRONG to say the US is still 'knee-deep in the first wave' of coronavirus infections and slams him for bad advice on masks

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he disagrees with the assessment of the country's top immunologist, Anthony Fauci, on the dire situation the United States faces as cases of the novel coronavirus continue to spread.

'The current state is really not good,' the highly respected Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in a Facebook and Twitter livestream on Monday. 'We are still knee-deep in the first wave of COVID-19 infections,' he said.

Trump, speaking Tuesday in a TV interview, disagreed with Fauci, a key player on the White House's own Coronavirus Task Force.

'I think we are in a good place,' the president said in an interview on the 'Full Court Press' news show hosted by a former Fox News anchor, adding: 'I disagree with him.'

'Dr. Fauci said don't wear masks, now he says wear them,' he continued, adding that the immunologist has 'said numerous things' that according to Trump was bad advice.

Drinks, a quiet meal, and a course of panic buying: Melbourne's last hurrah on a sunny winter's day before the frustrating darkness of lockdown - as many businesses say they WON'T be back
  • Melburnians dined-out in the winter sunshine for one last time before lockdown restarts at 11.59 Wednesday
  • Beers flowed and hot meals were served up at the city's bars and restaurants for the last time until late August
  • Many Melbourne businesses fear it will probably be the last time they ever open - many will not survive
  • People continued to panic buy in the suburbs as supermarkets are hit by the new lockdown restrictions
  • Melbourne was packed with last minute shoppers, diner and drinkers enjoying a last taste of freedom
  • On Thursday, the bustling CBD will once again become a COVID-19 ghost town devoid of shoppers and diners

WHY ARE THY OBSESSED WITH OPENING THE SCHOOLS ?

Right now I'm listening to a press conference live with VP Pence and others telling the US
why it is "essential to get our schools open" - Are they obsessed with spreading the virus
around? - What is wrong with these people? - They could use all online education for awhile
could they not? - No chance of spreading Covid 19 around that way is there?

Have they finally given up in trying to control Covid?
- Is their policy now to let everyone get it ?

I suppose that many of his voters believed, in spite of Trump's many serious character flaws that were evident before he was elected, that he would be a strong leader. However, Trump is a weak and evasive leader, pretending that problems do not exist, rather than dealing with them. Definitely not the sort of leader you want in a time of crisis.

Goldman Sachs has done the math and a national mask mandate to halt the spread of coronavirus would have a big impact on the U.S. economy

Mask wearing could save the domestic economy from a 5% hit to GDP, Goldman says

Wearing a mask has become a uniquely hot-button issue in the U.S., which finds itself in the throes of a coronavirus crisis that appears to be drifting out of control by the day. However a recent report from Goldman Sachs projects that a lack of a national policy mandating the use of facial coverings throughout the U.S. is delivering an unnecessary hit to the domestic economy.

A team of economists lead by Jan Hatzius, chief economist at Goldman, makes the case that a national face-mask mandate could partially substitute for renewed lockdowns, as COVID-19 inflections flare up in a number of southern and western states in the U.S., that would “otherwise subtract 5% from gross domestic product.”

The Goldman crew attempted to explore the link between mask usage to protect against the transmission of droplets that pass on the COVID-19 infection, with the team looking at three key elements:

  1. A US regional panel in which we relate the growth rate of infections and fatalities to the introduction of state face mask mandate
  2. A large country-level cross section in which we relate cumulative infections and fatalities to the lag between the onset of spread and the introduction of a face mask mandate
  3. A smaller country-level panel in which we relate the growth rate of infections and fatalities to lagged mask usage.

“We start by showing that a national mandate would likely increase face mask usage meaningfully, especially in states such as Florida and Texas where masks remain largely voluntary to date,” the Goldman researchers write in their 11-page report.

Their data showed that countries that fail to reach widespread masking usage see both infections and deaths increased:

The Goldman report comes as Florida, Texas, California and Arizona—the states that have accounted for much of the recent rise in U.S. cases—imposed new restrictions and rolled back their reopening plans.

There are now 10.4 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 world-wide and at least 509,706 people have died, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. continues to lead the world, with a case tally of 2.68 million and death toll of 129,545.

On Monday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, said that pandemic is “not even close to being over.”

Still, mask wearing in the U.S. has been lax and not uniform.

Boris Johnson is set to give gyms the green light to reopen within DAYS - provided they take measures to slow the spread of Covid

Ministers were last night finalising which sectors will get the go-ahead to restart, but Whitehall sources said health officials were satisfied that indoor gyms were safe to reopen, provided they take stringent measures to slow the spread of the virus. They will be allowed to reopen by 'mid-July', and possibly as soon as next week. Other sectors being considered for reopening include swimming pools, beauty salons, nail bars, bowling alleys and casinos. However, other sectors, such as theatres and nightclubs, look set to remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Obama admin shut down H1N1 testing, complicating Biden's attacks on Trump's coronavirus screening

(Excerpts)

Joe Biden is stepping up his attacks on the Trump administration's coronavirus testing management, saying Wednesday that "the crisis in Arizona is the direct result of Donald Trump's failure to lead and his desire to 'slow the testing down,' and Americans are suffering the consequences."

During the 2009 swine flu epidemic, however, the Obama administration suddenly told states to shut down their testing, without providing much in the way of explanation.

"In late July, the CDC abruptly advised states to stop testing for H1N1 flu, and stopped counting individual cases," CBS News reported in 2009. "The rationale given for the CDC guidance to forego testing and tracking individual cases was: why waste resources testing for H1N1 flu when the government has already confirmed there's an epidemic?"

Ron Klain, who served as Biden's chief of staff at the time, and currently advises him on health matters, remarked last year: “It is purely a fortuity that this isn’t one of the great mass casualty events in American history. It had nothing to do with us doing anything right. It just had to do with luck.

Colorado city to mandate coronavirus face coverings, threatening up to a year in jail for violators

The city of Englewood, Colo. located just south of Denver, will require all citizens to wear face masks Friday as coronavirus cases are on the rise. Violators will have the right to a trial but could face up to a year in prison or a $2,600 fine.

The emergency order was issued by City Manager J. Shawn Lewis and approved by the city council Monday, detailing that everyone over the age of 6-years old will be required to wear a mask when outside of their homes.

The order directs all members of the public to wear face masks that cover both their nose and mouth while in any retail, commercial, or government offices along with all health care facilities, including veterinary offices.

All people taking public transportation are required to wear face masks. Drivers of public transportation services, like Uber and taxi services are required to wear a face mask unless members of their family are in the vehicle.

Face coverings are not required when in a personal office and individuals are more than six feet apart from one another.

With the Corona virus and talk of bubonic plague in China, it reminded me of the Georgia guidestones. One of the things carved into the granite was a wish to lower the population to 500 million. Granted the world’s population is around 7.8 billion give or take. Is this possibility the beginning of a de-population of the planet? The situation isn’t looking too good right now. Disease and strife are everywhere. I don’t normally go in for the global elite talk but something is negatively impacting the planet. Who knows, we made need those grain seeds Bill Gates has stored in the Arctic.

There are three states with over 100 coronavirus related deaths...There are huge waiting periods in some states at testing facilities, I think more and more people are wanting to be tested now...

I went out on a drive around in the country and stopped at Walmart and a grocery store on my way home...Both shops require exact change or round up, otherwise use plastic because of the US coin shortage...
