However, not everyone is so convinced. Chris Lintott, an astronomer at the University of Oxford, told Live Science: 'Any suggestion that it's artificial is nonsense on stilts.' He added that these claims are an 'insult to the exciting work going on to understand this object.'

However, Loeb insisted the anomalies warrant investigation, not ridicule. 'I laid out this possibility in order to encourage observers who are convinced that 3I/ATLAS is a comet to collect as much data as possible in an attempt to prove me wrong,' he said. 'In the presence of ample data, there will be no leeway for them to shove anomalies under the carpet of conventional thinking.' The professor also predicted that 'An optimal intercept of Earth would entail an arrival in late November or early December of 2025

What makes 3I/ATLAS so unusual, Loeb argued, is its trajectory, passing behind the sun from Earth's perspective, which he speculates could provide cover for deploying smaller probes toward Earth if it's an artificial craft. Referring to the object as a 'mothership,' he explained that its position would be an efficient way to seed habitable planets with probes. This strategy would allow the devices to 'intercept the planets while the mothership continues on its journey to the next star.'

'It may come to save us or destroy us. We'd better be ready for both options and check whether all interstellar objects are rocks,' said Loeb. The arrival of 3I/ATLAS has presented a different challenge than the distant alien signals sought by SETI researchers for more than six decades.

Even if 3I/ATLAS turns out to be artificial, Loeb said humanity lacks the technological means to intercept it.

The object's speed at perihelion, its closest approach to the sun, will be nearly 60 miles per second, far beyond the capabilities of chemical rockets. And its 'clocking' move behind the sun will make it impossible for Earth-based telescopes to observe. 'The protocol on how to respond to an alien threat depends on the nature and intent of the associated spacecraft,' said Loeb. 'There is no international organization ready to make a global decision on how to engage with 3I/ATLAS, should it be an alien spacecraft.'

He has proposed a standardized alert scale for interstellar objects, similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes. On such a scale, a harmless comet would be a zero, while confirmation of alien technology could rate a ten. 'This isn't just a matter for one country,' Loeb emphasized. 'If the next object is a probe, all of humanity will be affected. We must be ready to act, together.'

While Loeb has suggested alternative ideas for what 3I/ATLAS could be, a team of more than 200 researchers said it is more likely to be a comet. They identified the object's coma, the cloud of ice, dust and gas surrounding it, which Loeb determined was not present.

NASA told to chase potential alien probe before it's gone forever

A mysterious object from outside our solar system-one that a Harvard scientist suggests could be alien technology-is making its way past the sun, and scientists are racing to catch up. Dubbed 3I/ATLAS, the object was first detected by NASA on July 1. It will make its closest pass to the sun on Oct. 30, at a distance of 130 million miles, before disappearing back into space.

3I/ATLAS is only the third known object from another star system to visit our own, following 'Oumuamua in 2017 and comet Borisov in 2019. Because it's moving so fast-more than 37 miles per second-launching a new spacecraft from Earth is virtually impossible. A recent pre-print study from Michigan State University calculated that a mission would have needed to launch at 15 miles per second on the day of discovery just to intercept it in time.

Instead, scientists are looking into existing spacecraft already in orbit around other planets. Harvard Professor Avi Loeb has proposed redirecting one or more of them to intercept 3I/ATLAS, including NASA's Juno probe, currently orbiting Jupiter.

In a recent study, Loeb questioned whether 3I/ATLAS could be an alien probe, pointing to its unusual trajectory past Venus, Mars and Jupiter, which he said showed "precision." The object has already been observed by major observatories, including Gemini North in Hawaii and the Very Large Telescope in Chile. NASA also plans to study it with the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope.

Loeb believes Juno, which is scheduled to plunge into Jupiter's atmosphere at the end of its mission in Sept. 2025, could be repurposed. He suggests using its remaining fuel to redirect it toward 3I/ATLAS when the object passes within about 34 million miles of Jupiter in March 2026.

Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has backed the proposal in a letter to interim NASA Administrator Sean Duffy, urging the agency to explore extending Juno's mission. "It is recommended that NASA conduct a study to assess how much fuel is left in Juno's engine, and I support an extension of the Juno mission at least until mid-March 2026 at a cost of about $15M per 6 months from the current expiration date of mid-September 2025," Luna wrote.

But not everyone is on board. "Juno does not have enough fuel to visit 3I/ATLAS. Its main engine is also malfunctioning," Jason Wright, a professor at Pennsylvania State University, wrote on X. "An extended mission for Juno would be awesome, but a visit to 3I/ATLAS makes no sense."

Other options are still on the table. Researchers are exploring whether Mars Odyssey or the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter could be redirected, though it's unclear if either has the fuel to make the journey. One of the craft could theoretically reach the object if launched by September, according to the Michigan State team.

"It would require a lot of fuel and a lot of rapid mobilization from people here on Earth," said Atsuhiro Yaginuma of Michigan State University. "But getting close to an interstellar object could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Scientists baffled as interstellar object produces its own light

The mysterious interstellar object hurtling through our solar system has just given scientists more evidence that it may be a craft from another part of the galaxy. According to Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, the object dubbed 3I/ATLAS seems to be generating its own light, similar to a vehicle turning on its headlights, but its source is currently a mystery. The shocking revelation came from a picture an astronomer took of 3I/ATLAS using the Hubble Space Telescope on July 21.

The light from 3I/ATLAS in Hubble's photo appeared as a glowing area focused on the side of the object facing the sun. It’s not a beam or laser shooting out like a spotlight, nor was it a uniform glow covering the entire surface. Until now, the prevailing theory has been that the fast-moving object is a giant comet approximately 12 miles long , which will make its closest pass to Earth on December 17. In a new report, Loeb said this glow might be caused by dust coming off the object's surface as it is heated by the sun.

However, the glow's brightness decreases sharply with distance, which doesn't match how typical comets behave when they reflect sunlight. According to Loeb, this has added yet another potential clue that 3I/ATLAS might be artificial, containing a powerful source of energy that's capable of generating light we see from millions of miles away. '3I/ATLAS could be a spacecraft powered by nuclear energy, and the dust emitted from its frontal surface might be from dirt that accumulated on its surface during its interstellar travel,' Loeb wrote in a statement.

'This cannot be ruled out, but requires better evidence to be viable,' he added. Normally, comets glow because of the dust and gas around them reflecting sunlight. This light usually spreads out more evenly and doesn't dim as quickly as you move away from the comet's core. Scientists expected the brightness of 3I/ATLAS to follow a similar pattern, but instead, it drops off sharply, suggesting the light might be coming from something else entirely.

The discovery was similar to standing near a bright flashlight. The light is intense up close, but as you walk away, it fades fast. Loeb and his colleague Eric Keto suggested that if 3I/ATLAS is producing its own light, the supposed comet could be much smaller than the 12 miles scientists initially thought. If it's creating its light, Loeb estimated that 3I/ATLAS could be as small as 300 feet long, with the object's brightness fooling our telescopes until it gets closer to Earth.

This would put 3I/ATLAS in a similar size category to Oumuamua, the first interstellar object recorded passing through the solar system in 2017. Just like 3I/ATLAS, Loeb has remained convinced that Oumuamua was an artificially created spacecraft sent to probe our solar system . At the time, the scientist noted that Oumuamua displayed the strange ability to speed up without the influence of gravity as it traveled through space.

With 3I/ATLAS, scientists have already noted strange patterns emerging, months before the object makes its closest approach to Earth in December. In July, Loeb and his team found that 3I/ATLAS was on an extremely unusual course that would take it close to three different planets: Venus, Mars, and Jupiter. The astrophysicist and UFO researcher explained that the object's course was so rare that the chance of a natural space rock randomly flying along such a path was less than 0.005 percent.

Astronomers have also found that 3I/ATLAS does not appear to have a coma, the cloud of gas and dust that typically surrounds comets. Loeb previously said this suggested the giant object could not be a comet, which should have a smaller core and be part of a larger population of interstellar objects. Loeb explored several other ideas to explain this light. One possibility is that the object is evaporating icy particles as it gets closer to the sun, which could explain the glow and lack of a tail.

However, other natural explanations, like a piece of a star explosion or an object heated by rubbing against space material, seem unlikely because they don’t fit the data researchers have gathered so far. A black hole or radioactive material wouldn’t produce enough light for telescopes to see. There’s also not enough material in space to cause friction heating. Scientists hope to get better images when 3I/ATLAS passes close to Mars on October 3. These new images could help figure out whether 3I/ATLAS is a natural space rock or something more unusual, like a piece of alien technology.

Interstellar object caught emitting mysterious metal that suggests 'technological origin'

An interstellar object speeding through our Solar System has been spotted spewing a metal unlike anything seen in natural comets.

The Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile detected an unusual nickel plume from the object, known as 3I/ATLAS. Unlike natural comets, which always emit nickel alongside iron, 3I/ATLAS shows the metallic element without any detectable iron.

Harvard physicist Avi Loeb highlighted the anomaly described in a new study, noting that this nickel signature is a hallmark of industrial production of nickel alloys.

'Is this anomaly another clue for a possible technological origin of 3I/ATLAS?' Loeb wrote in a blog post.

'The paper suggests that chemical formation occurs through the nickel carbonyl channel, an extremely rare process in comets, but a standard technique in industrial nickel refining,' he added.

The new study, published by astrophysicists in Chile on Wednesday, found that 3I/ATLAS is shedding nickel at roughly five grams per second and cyanide at 20 grams per second, with both rising sharply as the object moves closer to the sun.

Researchers noted that the mechanisms driving these emissions are not typical of natural cometary processes.

They hypothesized that nickel might be released from dust through gentle processes, such as sunlight, causing it to evaporate or breaking down small nickel-containing compounds.

Astronomers have found something strange in the James Webb Space Telescope's first images of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as it hurtles toward our sun, according to a new study.

The telescope's initial observations suggested that 3I/ATLAS has one of the highest carbon dioxide (CO2) to water (H2O) ratios ever recorded in a comet. This unusual chemistry, if confirmed, could shed light on 3I/ATLAS' mysterious origins beyond our solar system.
Scientists have been using various telescopes to learn all they can about 3I/ATLAS since its discovery in July. The extremely rare comet is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever recorded, and researchers are keen to study its makeup before the intruder whizzes past our sun in October and exits the solar system for good.


The first James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations took place on Aug. 6, with researchers making use of the JWST's near-infrared spectrograph to decipher the comet's physical properties based on the light it emits. They reported their findings Monday (Aug. 25) in a preprint paper posted on the European research repository Zenodo, so they have not yet been peer-reviewed.

Comets develop an atmosphere, or coma, as they fly by stars. This cloud of gas and dust grows larger and brighter the closer a comet gets to a star, with ice and other materials on the comet heating up and releasing gas in a process called outgassing. The JWST imaging revealed that 3I/ATLAS' coma was dominated by carbon dioxide, according to the study.

The researchers noted that the high carbon dioxide content could be linked to exposure to radiation or where the comet formed in relation to the distance at which CO2 froze (the CO2 ice line) around its parent protoplanetary disk — the swirling gas and dust that surrounds young stars and from which planets, comets and asteroids are born.

"Our observations are compatible with an intrinsically CO2-rich nucleus, which may indicate that 3I/ATLAS contains ices exposed to higher levels of radiation than Solar System comets, or that it formed close to the CO2 ice line in its parent protoplanetary disk," the researchers wrote in the study.

Astronomers are learning more about 3I/ATLAS with each new observation. Their findings so far indicate that the comet is whizzing along at speeds in excess of 130,000 mph (210,000 km/h) in an unusually flat and straight trajectory that is unlike anything else in the solar system.

Initial size estimates put the comet at around 7 miles (11 kilometers) wide. However, subsequent data from the Hubble Space Telescope suggested that 3I/ATLAS is probably closer to a maximum of 3.5 miles (5.6 km) across. Either way, it's likely the largest interstellar object ever seen. 3I/ATLAS could also be the oldest comet ever seen, with one study suggesting it's around 3 billion years older than our 4.6 billion-year-old solar system. It's currently unclear where the comet came from.

That hasn't stopped some from speculating. Last month, a controversial preprint study explored the idea that 3I/ATLAS could be a piece of "possibly hostile" extraterrestrial technology in disguise. However, experts told Live Science that the study's claims were "nonsense" and "insulting."

"No one knows where the comet came from," David Jewitt, an astronomer at UCLA and science team leader for the Hubble observations, said in the statement. "It's like glimpsing a rifle bullet for a thousandth of a second. You can't project that back with any accuracy to figure out where it started on its path."

The object known as 3I/ATLAS was first revealed on July 1st following its discovery by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) - a robotic astronomical survey which uses multiple telescopes to scan the night sky for small near-Earth objects. Believed to measure 12 miles across, the object is heading toward the inner solar system at 152,000 mph. While many scientists believe that 3I/ATLAS is likely to be a comet, others, such as Harvard's Professor Avi Loeb, maintain that it could in fact be under intelligent extraterrestrial control.

Now a new paper analyzing spectroscopic data recorded by the Very Large Telescope (VLT) has highlighted a peculiar anomaly in the plume of gas surrounding the object. Most notably, it seems to contain nickel but not iron which, according to Loeb, is something you would typically expect to see in the industrial production of nickel alloys. "Natural comets generically show iron and nickel simultaneously, as both elements are produced together in the ejecta of supernova explosions," he wrote.

"Is this anomaly another clue for a possible technological origin of 3I/ATLAS? The paper suggests chemical formation through the nickel carbonyl channel which is an extremely rare and exotic possibility in comets, whereas it is a standard technology for industrial nickel refining." So could this be further evidence that 3I/ATLAS was artificially constructed? "On the one hand I would be pleased if 3I/ATLAS turned out to be a CO2-rich comet, implying that humanity is not at risk from alien technology," Loeb wrote. "But on the other hand - humanity desperately needs a wake-up call to avoid self-destruction."
