The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS has stunned astronomers with a vast, high-energy halo that seems to glow far brighter than standard physics predicts. Around this icy visitor, instruments are picking up an immense X-ray structure stretching roughly a quarter of a million miles, a scale and intensity that has quickly turned a routine flyby into one of the strangest space stories of the year.

Instead of a neat, textbook comet tail, researchers are now grappling with a sprawling, 250,000-mile cloud of X-ray emission that appears to wrap the object in a ghostly cocoon. I find that this discovery is forcing scientists to revisit basic assumptions about how interstellar debris behaves when it barrels into the solar wind, and it is reopening old debates about what, exactly, counts as “natural” in the deep sky.

When astronomers first mapped the high-energy environment around 3I/ATLAS, they did not expect to find a luminous shell of X-rays extending some 250,000 miles from the nucleus. That scale is enormous even by comet standards, and the brightness of the glow has raised the possibility that the signal is either being misread or that something genuinely new is happening in the interaction between this object and the charged particles streaming from the Sun. CIA refuses to 'confirm or deny' that it has records on comet 3I/ATLAS

Signs of a potential cover-up concerning a CIA investigation of the interstellar object have been unearthed. With 3I/ATLAS now heading away from the Earth to resume its journey through the solar system and with NASA having conclusively determined it to be little more than a normal comet, it would have seemed as though the story of this intriguing interstellar interloper was all but over.

But as recently highlighted by Harvard's Prof Avi Loeb in his latest blog entry, it seems that it wasn't always a foregone conclusion that 3I/ATLAS would turn out to be harmless. On December 31st, the CIA replied to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted by The Black Vault's John Greenewald Jr. by stating that it could "neither confirm nor deny" the existence or nonexistence of any records pertaining to 3I/ATLAS.

Greenewald Jr., who is going to file an appeal, maintains that this is a standard response when records do exist, but the CIA doesn't want to release them for various reasons. "If [the conclusion that 3I/ATLAS is a comet] was clear all along to everyone within government and academia - as NASA officials presented the case, then why would the CIA treat the possible existence of records dealing with a natural comet as sensitive enough to be classified?" Loeb wrote.

He went on to suggest that this could indicate that 3I/ATLAS had been investigated by the CIA as a possible "black swan" event (something that could pose a serious threat to human society), but that revealing such a possibility would have been detrimental to social cohesion. In other words, there would be no point even suggesting to the public that the object had the potential to end human civilization considering how extraordinarily unlikely such a possibility actually was.

Still, this is the first time the CIA has offered a response of this nature in relation to an astronomical object, suggesting that it must have held some real significance to the powers that be.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember them using the classic movie line of "we can neither confirm nor deny" in the past. Seems like their standard response used to be more like "no files pertaining to your requested search terms of X, Y, and Z eligible for public release have been located." But yes, it would make total sense for the CIA to do some work on 3I/Atlas and other space anomalies. Even if it was mostly just to see if we can figure out what other nations know about them. Also as I understand it, the CIA has alot more latitude in what they can do outside the USA since they are officially not a military service and not bound by various treaties, i.e. Air America during Vietnam.

That unexpected boost, a form of “non‑gravitational acceleration,” is turning this already rare interstellar object into a crucial test of how well we understand both comets and the space between the stars.

Instead of following the clean curve predicted by gravity from the Sun and planets, 3I/ATLAS is drifting off the purely ballistic track astronomers first calculated. The deviation is tiny in everyday terms, but in precision orbital mechanics it is large enough to demand an explanation, and it is already fueling a new round of debate over whether familiar comet physics can fully account for what we are seeing.

What makes 3I/ATLAS so unusual

From the moment astronomers reconstructed Its early path through archival images, 3I/ATLAS stood out as something that did not belong to our neighborhood. Orbital calculations show that 3I/ATLAS is the most hyperbolic object yet observed, with an eccentricity of 6.14, far beyond the values seen for long‑period comets that still originate within the Sun’s distant gravitational reach. Another analysis of Its path reports an orbital eccentricity of around 6.14 and a speed of nearly 210,000 kilometers per hour relative to the Sun, making it unbound to the Sun’s gravity and ensuring it will never loop back for a second pass.

NASA’s detection of “non‑gravitational” acceleration

As 3I/ATLAS swung through its closest approach to the Sun, NASA teams tracking its motion noticed that the comet was not exactly where a gravity‑only model said it should be. The acceleration was measured at 203 million kilometers from the Sun, a distance of 1.36 astronomical units, and the deviation showed up only after careful Analysis of the tracking data. That is exactly the regime where solar heating should start to wake up a comet’s ices, so the timing immediately pointed scientists toward familiar physics rather than exotic explanations.

Each jet of escaping gas carries momentum, and by Newton’s third law the nucleus recoils in the opposite direction, just as a garden sprinkler slowly turns as water sprays out.

Measurements from previous missions show that the gases given off are water, CO, CO2 and similar species that sublimate at very low temperatures, and that the speed of these jets in sunlight can reach around 700 metres per second, according to detailed studies of jet structure from the Rosetta mission’s fine structure work. For a small, low‑mass nucleus like 3I/ATLAS, even a modest amount of such outflow can add up to the kind of subtle acceleration NASA is now folding into its trajectory models.

Comparisons with ‘Oumuamua and the alien‑craft speculation

3I/ATLAS is only the third known object to pass through our solar system from outside it, and that history inevitably invites comparisons with 1I/2017 U1, better known as Oumuamua. Enigmatic interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS yields intriguing new discovery

The object, which made headline news last year, appears to contain something that scientists were not expecting. By now, just about everyone will have heard about 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar object - thought by most scientists to be a comet - that was discovered passing through our solar system last year. Most of the intrigue surrounding this object came courtesy of a vocal minority - including Harvard's Prof Avi Loeb - who believed that there was a reasonable chance that 3I/ATLAS could in fact be an artificially constructed object controlled by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization.

Evidence of this came in the form of various anomalies concerning the object's speed, composition and trajectory that Loeb in particular had interpreted as evidence of artificial construction.

When 3I/ATLAS reached its closest approach to the Earth and headed off back toward interstellar space, however, it quickly became apparent that there was nothing intelligent about it at all. That said, this intriguing interstellar interloper is still throwing up surprises - as evidenced recently when a new study using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile discovered that 3I/ATLAS is home to an anomalously large amount of methanol. Considered a precursor to the development of life, methanol is found in other comets in our solar system but not in anywhere near as high an amount.

Its presence in 3I/ATLAS in such large quantities offers a hint at what the conditions might have been like in the distant solar system where this object began its journey through the cosmos. "Observing 3I/ATLAS is like taking a fingerprint from another solar system," said study lead author Nathan Roth of American University. "The details reveal what it's made of, and it's bursting with methanol in a way we just don't usually see in comets in our own solar system."
