Another US Naval Ship Collison

As I was an engineer in the Navy during the Persian Gulf war I'm also stunned by the losses of life with these accidents lately...

I wonder if there's any truth to the possibility of hacking the computer systems?...

Just leaves you at a loss for words doesn't it?

As Above So Below
Just leaves you at a loss for words doesn't it?

I know when I was out on the seas we knew where every ship was in the general area and it's trajectory...What is the problem now with these collisions?..

Navy crews at fault in fatal collisions, investigations find

Here is news of the official report of the incidents.

It is sad reading. If I was an opponent of the US I wouldn't be nearly as worried about the US Navy.

One of the collisions was in part because the sailor didn't understand how his navigation station worked.

In both cases the almost total lack of situational awareness is breathtaking. And in the case of the McCain the captain was on the bridge during collision and had been for hours.

Sadly, the Navy seems to be faced with trying to fix stupid, and stupid is hard to fix.

This is the fifth collision of a US warship this year.
Japanese boat crashes into US Navy destroyer in Pacific Fleet’s 5th collision this year
A US Navy destroyer has collided with a Japanese tugboat in Sagami Bay, off the east coast of Japan, making it the fifth such incident involving the Pacific Fleet this year.

An official statement from the US Navy's 7th Fleet said the tugboat lost its propulsion and drifted into the USS Benfold on Saturday, sustaining minor damage.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65) was participating in a scheduled towing exercise in Sagami Wan Nov. 18, when the tug boat lost propulsion and drifted into the ship.

The way I read this is the tug was towing the Benfold, lost power suddenly, and the sleeker more massive destroyer overran it before the Benfold could fire up the engines and put them in reverse.

Now, there will be lessons learned from this. But depending on the length of the tow rope they wouldn't have had a lot of warning or time to respond. Since this is a possibility in a real towing emergency they should have been more on top of the situation and had some options to keep the boats apart.

Towing with a rope is not a trivial process.
