Stellantis has said that this is not due to an increase in demand for electric vehicles, but rather because the zero emission vehicle mandate, which requires 16 percent of all van sales next year to be electric, or else it will face heavy fines for every ICE vehicle over the quota, means it cannot sustain its operations at the Luton factory.

The ZEV mandate had been relaxed by the outgoing Tory government, after they stupidly and rashly introduced it a few years ago, but one of the first acts of the new Labour energy secretary, the fanatical ideologue Ed Miliband, was to re-instate the punitive schedule. One of the claims of the incoming Labour government was that its mission was economic growth, and that its green energy plans would somehow lead to the creation of jobs. So far, it is only costing jobs.

Which explains a lot about this past election here and why Starmer is facing recall or whatever it's called over there. We liked that flavor of BS a few years ago but it's gone past it's Sell By date, now we'll get different nonsense for a while.

yeah, but the BIG problem is that more I read history more of these zelaous diletants I find. They are all over the time and space if you want.

For example, recently I learned that one such a zelaut, Lenin, wanted to abolish money, so as soon as he highjacked power he started inflating money supply which led to widespread bankrupcies and layoffs of his main supporters, Russian working class people.

Or another zelaut was Hitler, who was by Oct. 1941 informed by his minister of finance that his government is bankrupt, because Hitler spent tons of money on both preparing for war and on widespread social programs.

Now, I'm not comparinging anybody to Hitler or Lenin, but Environmental crowd can be very ideological. As well as liberal crowd, or neo-con crowd, or woke crowd etc. etc. Just want to point to blinkered zealots dragging everybody else into bankrupcy with their agendas that are little bit more then conspiracy theories.

OBD data can't track movements but can give impressive amounts of data. Add ^^^^ that to it and I'll bet incidents of late night back road encounters eventually drops to zero.

I was watching one of these UFO videos and there was this ex-Navy Seal saying that all the secret agents are "chipped". Essentially wherever they go in person their body is GPS located.

If you like that then you should look into oral white blood cell counts and remote viewing. That was some weird **** JB Alexander spoke about that I have a hard time getting my head around. There is something about those cells that lend themselves to RV that would provide 'proof of life' and other information in say, a hostage situation.

Electric motorcycle that can fly and self .... drive and fly apparently. Who doesn't need that?

Hate to be a party pooper but no, this isn't the answer for congested urban areas. Anything that has what, eight rotating blades of Death on it would be contraindicated. Then again, it depends on exactly how you intend to address urban congestion doesn't it? Thin out the herd perhaps? Oh Jeez, it's not even 0800... too dark.

Seriously, just go to any Walmart and sit in the parking lot for half an hour and then we'll see about whirling blades of doom.

The average motorist is not competent to fly an aircraft. There are good reasons why flying instruction is much more intensive than driving instruction, lasts longer, has a larger theoretical component, and staying licenced to fly has more stringent medical requirements, and requires proof of currency and annual renewal. Despite this, there are still people who should not be flying who manage to slip through the cracks sometimes. There are many more people who slip through the cracks among the motoring public. No society wants or needs the average car driver in charge of aircraft.

Furthermore, VTOL aircraft are all inherently very noisy (you can hear any powered, light conventional aircraft approaching from thousands of yards away, at least, regardless of whether it is VTOL or not). To have thousands of these overhead in congested urban areas would lead to unbearable noise pollution.

Still further, aviation only works because the skies are relatively uncongested with aircraft. To greatly multiply the number of aircraft in the skies at once threatens to make the whole endeavour untenable.

Indeed, hence my comment about any parking lot Walmart or otherwise: they are basic IQ tests that far too many fail to even consider handing over the keys to something even more dangerous. How a company can market that and expect it to sell is beyond me.
 

EV maker recently worth more than Ford teeters on the brink as it mulls bankruptcy​

Nikola, a hydrogen class-8 truck manufacturer, is in talks about an upcoming bankruptcy, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Initial discussions appear to revolve around a potential Chapter 11 filing. Executives are debating a sale or restructure of the company, according to The Journal.

A Nikola spokesperson told the publication the company is still assessing its financial position.

In 2020, the company went public before even producing a vehicle for the market. At one point, Nikola's worth hit $30 billion and made it more valuable than Ford. But the brand's image quickly crashed.

Its rise was fueled by bold promises from founder Trevor Milton, who was later convicted of securities fraud in 2022 for misleading investors about the company’s zero-emissions technology.

The company captured headlines after it admitted to doctoring a promotional YouTube video. In the video, the manufacturer rolled a truck down a hill, claiming it was operating under its own power - but in reality, it was simply taking advantage of gravity.

If common sense might be applied for a brief period - which would probably require CERN to actually measure in today's political climate - don't relatively small electric vehicles actually make sense for congested urban areas? Apart from pollution those are places where the necessary infrastructure can be more readily developed.

For others hybrids still make sense to me as do good old ICE vehicles depending on application.

I'd have no problem with federal tax incentives for such things, nor do I have a problem with mandating minimum mpg standard for ICE vehicles as long as they applied with common sense, a commodity sorely lacking lately.

Since when did one single solution ever solve a problems large and complex as this? That applies to UFOs ...... :)

Sounds like somebody finally took a page out of Henry Ford's book and figured out how to make a simple vehicle again. It also sounds like Jeff Bezos put his money into something potentially useful. From the '70s into the '90s tiny utilitarian pickup trucks were quite popular and I think would be again if they were available. Instead we get the overpriced American Colossus. This is a really interesting idea, I hope it gains ground.

The only thing I didn't care for is that it's affordable after government tax incentives, but honestly that's really not unusual.

 
US car manufacturers call examination of Chinese BYD most popular model "extinction event" ( for US car industry ). BYD's model is much cheaper and much higher quality for the price. Same feeling is in Germany, where all car manufacturers are moving their manifacturing to China because of the high level of vertical integration, meaning that all parts are made by one manufacturer in one location.

At least DT is doing something about it, instead of just printing money like previous administrations.

A lot of the threat to the Western car industry from cheap Chinese EVs is due to self-created pressure to adopt EVs in the first place, by fining western companies for producing ICE vehicles.
