Mass Bird Deaths Around the World

Flocks of starlings that create choreographed patterns in the skies over Rome have mysteriously lost their aplomb, with hundreds falling to their deaths after colliding with each other. The birds began plummeting from the sky last weekend, leaving a litter of tiny corpses across roads and pavements.

At Porta Pia, one of the gates of Rome, and in other neighbourhoods, residents had to tiptoe around fallen birds’ bodies, while mopeds risked skidding on corpses crushed by passing cars.

It was like a Hitchcock film — there was a lot of blood and the smell became horrible,” Paolo Peroso, head of the Porta Pia residents’ association, said.

Early tests on the dead birds ruled out poison or disease, said Francesca Manzia, head of a hospital run by the Italian League for the Protection of Birds. “We found they were in good health but suffering from the trauma and broken bones you would associate with collisions, either with each other or with cables,” she said.

An abnormally large number of starlings heading for the same trees could have led to the collisions, while another cause could be attacks by predators, which create panic within the murmurations, she said.

Hundreds of starlings mysteriously drop DEAD from the sky

A few days before, 100s of birds fall from sky in Utah landing on cars as shown in this video:

DRAPER, Utah – More than 200 birds fell from the sky onto a Draper street Monday, leading residents to wonder what caused this mass avian accident.

“It’s one of the rarest things I’ve ever heard of,” said Sergeant Chad Carpenter with the Draper City Police Department.

“As I was driving, these birds were just falling out of the sky,” said Draper resident, Lacey Brown as she was driving down the street on 300 East in Draper.

“They were all on the ground right around here and on the roadway,” Brown said, “They were just falling out of the sky like leaves,” she added.

But they weren’t leaves, they were hundreds of small birds called starlings.

Seeing as I've seen clouds of starlings a mile long I'd not be surprised if some collided at certain times where a few hundred died. Since the causes appear to be trauma I'd say this is a likely cause.

If these are the two choices I'd say its more likely humans are behind it.

I'm just guessing, it's kind of puzzling why flocks of birds behave the way they do sometimes, I think part of the problem is we don't understand birds as much as we may think...

No doubt we do not understand them......we have a long way to go for that.

Having seen clouds and flocks of birds my entire life I don't find such things out of the ordinary.

Dead Crows Were “Falling From the Sky” In Northeast Portland

On the afternoon of January 30, 2018, Portland Audubon began receiving reports of dead and dying crows in NE Portland in the vicinity of Martin Luther King Blvd and NE Jessup Street.

Witnesses observed crows "falling from the sky" as a large flock of crows flew west through the area. Witnesses also observed both dead and dying crows experiencing severe seizures on the ground.

Both Portland Audubon and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife have responded to this situation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also directly involved. At least 10 dead crows spanning a multi-block radius have now been collected.

An additional dead crow was found in downtown Portland in the Park Blocks. The crows will undergo testing to determine the cause of death.

Based on external examination of the dead crows, they appeared to have been in good physical condition in terms of body mass, feather condition, and absence of obvious disease or injury.

Thousands of Dead Penguins on New Zealand's Coast

dead-penguin-nzherald.jpg

Many east coast beaches have been strewn with bodies of the world's smallest penguin species, in Maori called korora, along with shearwaters, petrels and other seabirds.

Although the sight has shocked some visitors to the region, even locals used to seeing dead seabirds are concerned at the number of birds in trouble and carcasses, Whangarei birdman Robert Webb said.

What is killing hundreds of birds in the Riviera Maya?

The strange death of hundreds of birds recorded in the winter of 2017 in the urban areas of Quintana Roo has attracted the attention of scientists and animal protectors.

Several species appeared in a mysterious way under conditions of fatigue or death, which generated an alert regarding the factors that could be altering their habitat.

These events occurred in the urban areas of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Holbox, Mahahual, Bacalar, Puerto Morelos, Chetumal, Akumal, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. In addition, the presence of affected birds in Yucatan and Campeche was recorded.

Authorities registered up to 20 of these cases daily, but another and perhaps the most significant was 200 deaths in the same urban park.

The most affected species have been trogons or black-headed trogons (Trogon melanocephalus) and birds, such as the canoe-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), says the text signed by Mónica Alba.

A team of specialists in wildlife management ruled out that the death and affectation in birds is due to the presence of infectious infections.

'Hundreds' of dead birds and 38 pufferfish wash up on Mount beach

Hundreds of dead birds have washed up in Mount Maunganui and there have been more reports of dead poisonous pufferfish found along the Bay of Plenty coastline.

The Western Bay Wildlife Trust had received "mass" reports of shearwaters, petrels, prions, shags and penguins washed ashore and 38 pufferfish had been collected on Mount Main Beach.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council regulatory compliance team leader Chris Brewer said 18 pufferfish were collected between the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service and Leisure Island on Wednesday and another 20 were picked up between the Mount track and Shark Alley yesterday.

Marine advocates are calling a large number of little blue penguins washing up along the Bay of Plenty coastline the "biggest penguin die-off in many years".

The Department of Conservation (DoC) Tauranga office had answered an average of five calls each week since February, and Western Bay Wildlife Trust's Julia Graham said the trust had 58 calls about dead penguins in two weeks.

"All of the penguins were dead, or died within a short time of arriving on land," Graham said.

Hundreds of shearwaters, petrels, prions, shags and penguins, including dead poisonous pufferfish, were reported to have washed up along the coastline in January this year.

Graham said a combination of factors including lack of food, rough weather and moulting had triggered the mass little blue penguin fatalities. "The combination of all of these events have led to the biggest penguin die off in many years.

"There is very little we can do to help these birds apart from offering them peace and quiet," she said.

Katikati community ranger for DoC Tracy Mezger said the Tauranga office had received a higher number of calls about dead penguins than this time last year.

Mezger said it had received an average of five calls each week for dead, injured, or unwell penguins since February.

"About half the calls have been for penguins already dead," she said. "They are a combination of single penguins or multiple penguins dead and washed ashore, both juvenile and adults."

Most of the calls were about penguins washed up on Mount Maunganui Main Beach, which Mezger said was likely because more people visited that beach than others.

Dozens of birds fall out of the sky in mysterious 'mortality event' | CBC News
Dozen of Birds Rain Down from the Sky in Canada - Coast to Coast AM
The Canadian Wildlife Service is investigating a "mortality event" in which dozens of birds literally fell from the sky on a road near Tsawwassen, B.C.

People were shocked to witness the birds, believed to be starlings, plunge to the ground near the BC Ferries terminal on Sept. 14.

It is unclear whether they were dead before hitting the ground.

'It was horrible'

Kevin Beech says the scene was something reminiscent to an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

"The poor little guys were in blood pools and stuff. It was horrible," he said.

He took a picture and posted it on Facebook, where it was shared hundreds of times.

Those who witnessed the event told Beech it was like a mass suicide as the birds, believed to be starlings, crashed to the ground in a big group.
