Measles in Minnesota: Child is hospitalized and second is isolating at home after testing positive for disease that is most dangerous in under-5s

Measles has been spotted in two children in Minnesota including one whose illness was so severe it led to them being hospitalized, local health officials say.

The youngsters — both under five years old — started displaying symptoms of the disease shortly after returning from an unnamed nation where 'measles is common'.

While one child is on emergency wards at a hospital the second is currently in isolation at home.

Neither was vaccinated against the disease, and both lived in Hennepin county which includes Minneapolis.

Unvaccinated children are at 'highest risk' from measles, the World Health Organization says. Figures show up to one in 300 Americans children die from the disease.

Measles has been eliminated in the United States for almost 20 years thanks to a comprehensive vaccination program. But globally the disease continues to circulate in a handful of countries including Brazil, India and areas of West and Central Africa.

Contact tracing is now underway to determine whether the disease has spread.

FDA approves GSK’s Priorix vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella

(Excerpt)

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced that it has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Priorix, a live measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The vaccine can be used to immunise those aged 12 months and above to help prevent contracting measles, mumps and rubella.

The treatment is currently licensed in more than 100 countries globally, including all European countries, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, with a roll-out of over 800 million doses to date.

Measles, mumps and rubella are highly-contagious viral diseases and account for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide.

More recently, increasing instances of measles outbreaks have been recorded in the US and globally, with over 400,000 cases confirmed in 2019, which marks a considerable regression in the decades of progress made towards the elimination of measles in many countries.
