DPS Crew Discovers Mysterious Monolith From Air In Remote Utah Wilderness

The Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was assisting Utah Division of Wildlife Resource officers counting bighorn sheep when the crew spotted something mysterious from above.

    The discovery was made Wednesday.

“One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it,” said pilot Bret Hutchings. “He was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!’ And I was like, ‘what.’ And he’s like, ‘There’s this thing back there – we’ve got to go look at it!’”

The crew circled back and landed the helicopter to take a closer look. They couldn’t believe their eyes.

Tucked in a red rock cove was a shiny metal monolith protruding from the ground. “I’d say it’s probably between 10 and 12 feet-high,” Hutchings said. “We were kind of joking around that if one of us suddenly disappears, then the rest of us make a run for it.”

Hutchings said it didn’t look like it was dropped into the ground from above. It was firmly planted there. “We were, like, thinking is this something NASA stuck up there or something. Are they bouncing satellites off it or something?” Hutchings questioned.

That said, the crew decided it didn’t appear there was any scientific purpose to it. Hutchings said it looked as if it was manmade – perhaps more of an art form than any kind of alien lifeform. “I’m assuming it’s some new wave artist or something or, you know, somebody that was a big (2001: A Space Odyssey) fan,” Hutchings said, referencing a scene in the movie.

Because the monolith was in an area the crew feared amateur adventurers might get stuck, they were intentionally vague about its location.

The group left with pictures and videos but few answers. Hutchings said he had seen many unusual things from the helicopter over the years, but never anything quite like this. “That’s been about the strangest thing that I’ve come across out there in all my years of flying,” Hutchings said.

I wonder how it's anchored in the ground, how deep it goes, that may give a clue to its construction...

There has to be a prosaic explanation for that. Yes, I'd like to know how far down it goes. Must be more to this story.

Maybe a charging station for your gravity drive? Or do you order there and then zip over to Roswell for curb side pickup?

So it would look more like the "2001: A Space Odyssey" monolith.

MYSTERIOUS MONOLITH HAS BEEN THERE FOR YEARS, ACCORDING TO GOOGLE EARTH

    Well, that was fast.

Over the weekend, a team of biologists discovered a bizarre metal monolith in the middle of the Utah wilderness, prompting real-world intrigue as well as humorous comparison’s to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

It’s still a mystery as to who put it there or why — but a group of eagle-eyed Reddit users have already discovered the location of the monolith on Google Earth.

It may only be a matter of time until crowds show up to take a selfie with the unusual construct. But just so we’re clear, you probably shouldn’t visit — you’d only end up putting yourself and others in danger, not to mention needlessly bothering the nearby wildlife and traveling during a pandemic.

    Rugged Hills

According to Google’s archive of satellite imagery, the monolith appears to have been erected at some point between August 2015 and October 2016, and is less than a mile away from what appears to be a trail.

A spokesperson for Utah’s Department of Public Safety speculated to The New York Times that it could have been there even longer, telling the paper that for “all we know it’s been installed since the ’40s and ’50s.”

“Somebody took the time to use some type of concrete-cutting tool or something to really dig down, almost in the exact shape of the object, and embed it really well,” the spokesperson added. “It’s odd. There are roads close by, but to haul the materials to cut into the rock, and haul the metal, which is taller than 12 feet in sections — to do all that in that remote spot is definitely interesting.”

    Major Hike

It would be quite the expedition — and not without risks — to get there. According to Google Maps, it’s about an hour and a half drive from the nearest highway — with a little more than half a mile of unpaved road to cover at the end of the journey.

The location was initially kept under wraps by authorities to keep nosy trespassers at bay.

“The exact location of the installation is not being disclosed since it is in a very remote area and if individuals were to attempt to visit the area, there is a significant possibility they may become stranded and require rescue,” a recent Utah Department of Public Safety statement read.

Officials are now calling for its removal as “it is illegal to install structures or art without authorization on federally managed public lands, no matter what planet you’re from,” according to the statement.

They better hope it wasn't really erected by aliens. They might get pissed!

Mysterious metal monolith appeared in Seattle nearly two decades ago, like Utah

    (Excerpt)

Well, it seems that Seattle also had a similar mystery two decades ago. Read this interesting essay by Walt Crowley found on HistoryLink.org.

“In the morning of January 1, 2001, Magnuson Park visitors discover a metalic monolith atop Kite Hill. The oblong object measures approximately three feet wide by nine feet tall and appears to be hollow. There is no indication of the identity of its creators or their planet of origin.

“Magnuson Park is located on the grounds of the former Sand Point Naval Air Station in northeast Seattle. The millennial monolith bore a striking resemblance to an alien artifact depicted in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, witnesses said.

“Once news of the monolith reached the airwaves, it attracted droves of visitors. Many came to the park to delicately touch the structure, possibly in the hopes of raising their consciousness, and of obtaining a higher plane of thought.

“Although no one of this earth obtained permits to install the monolith, park officials’ only concern was that of the safety risk. They pushed against the structure, but it would not give. They decided to let it stand, pending further investigation.

    A Migratory Monolith?

“It didn’t stand for long. Sometime during the wee hours of January 3, the monolith disappeared as mysteriously as it had arrived. All that remained was a hole containing a concrete platform, used to anchor the obelisk. In place of the monolith lay a single red rose, its stem snapped in two.

It didn’t take long for some hikers to find that monolith. So much for secrecy.

It would be great if it ratcheted up human intelligence, but I don't think that will happen.
