What discovered Mayan city Valeriana might have looked like

A huge Maya city has been discovered centuries after it disappeared under jungle canopy in Mexico.
Archaeologists found pyramids, sports fields, causeways connecting districts and amphitheatres in the southeastern state of Campeche.
They uncovered the hidden complex - which they have called Valeriana - using Lidar, a type of laser survey that maps structures buried under vegetation.
They believe it is second in density only to Calakmul, thought to be the largest Maya site in ancient Latin America.
The team discovered three sites in total, which are the size of Scotland's capital Edinburgh, “by accident” when one archaeologist browsed data on the internet.
“I was on something like page 16 of Google search and found a laser survey done by a Mexican organisation for environmental monitoring,” explains Luke Auld-Thomas, a PhD student at Tulane university in the US.
It was a Lidar survey, a remote sensing technique which fires thousands of laser pulses from a plane and maps objects below using the time the signal takes to return.
But when Mr Auld-Thomas processed the data with methods used by archaeologists, he saw what others had missed - a huge ancient city which may have been home to 30-50,000 people at its peak from 750 to 850 AD.
That is more than the number of people who live in the region today, the researchers say.
Mr Auld-Thomas and his colleagues named the city Valeriana after a nearby lagoon.
The find helps change an idea in Western thinking that the Tropics was where “civilisations went to die”, says Professor Marcello Canuto, a co-author in the research.
Instead, this part of the world was home to rich and complex cultures, he explains.
We can’t be sure what led to the demise and eventual abandonment of the city, but the archaeologists say climate change was a major factor.

There are no pictures of the city but it had pyramid temples similar to this one in nearby Calakmul
Valeriana has the “hallmarks of a capital city” and was second only in density of buildings to the spectacular Calakmul site, around 100km away (62 miles).
It is “hidden in plain sight”, the archaeologists say, as it is just 15 minutes hike from a major road near Xpujil where mostly Maya people now live.
There are no known pictures of the lost city because “no-one has ever been there”, the researchers say, although local people may have suspected there were ruins under the mounds of earth.
The city, which was about 16.6 sq km, had two major centres with large buildings around 2km (1.2 miles) apart, linked by dense houses and causeways.
It has two plazas with temple pyramids, where Maya people would have worshipped, hidden treasures like jade masks and buried their dead.
It also had a court where people would have played an ancient ball game.
There was also evidence of a reservoir, indicating that people used the landscape to support a large population.
In total, Mr Auld-Thomas and Prof Canuto surveyed three different sites in the jungle. They found 6,764 buildings of various sizes.

The ruins were found in eastern Mexico, in Campeche
Professor Elizabeth Graham from University College London, who was not involved in the research, says it supports claims that Maya lived in complex cities or towns, not in isolated villages.
"The point is that the landscape is definitely settled - that is, settled in the past - and not, as it appears to the naked eye, uninhabited or ‘wild’," she says.
The research suggests that when Maya civilisations collapsed from 800AD onwards, it was partly because they were so densely populated and could not survive climate problems.
"It's suggesting that the landscape was just completely full of people at the onset of drought conditions and it didn't have a lot of flexibility left. And so maybe the entire system basically unravelled as people moved farther away," says Mr Auld-Thomas.
Warfare and the conquest of the region by Spanish invaders in the 16th century also contributed to eradication of Maya city states.

Many more cities could be found

Lidar technology has revolutionised how archaeologists survey areas covered in vegetation, like the Tropics, opening up a world of lost civilisations, explains Prof Canuto.
In the early years of his career, surveys were done by foot and hand, using simple instruments to check the ground inch by inch.
But in the decade since Lidar was used in the Mesoamerican region, he says it’s mapped around 10 times the area that archaeologists managed in about a century of work.
Mr Auld-Thomas says his work suggests there are many sites out there that archaeologists have no idea about.
In fact so many sites have been found that researchers cannot hope to excavate them all.
"I've got to go to Valeriana at some point. It's so close to the road, how could you not? But I can't say we will do a project there," says Mr Auld-Thomas.
"One of the downsides of discovering lots of new Maya cities in the era of Lidar is that there are more of them than we can ever hope to study," he adds.
The research is published in the academic journal Antiquity.

My niece called last night and her daughter got caught up in this. She is obviously extremely upset.

This link is from a local paper and it has a video in it worth taking a look at. Apparently this kid posted it somewhere on social media and his intent is obvious and blood curdling.

Kenosha police arrest teen who reportedly tried to enter elementary school with gun

Considering this episode and that very recently an armed felon that police were chasing randomly entered and holed up in the house directly across the street from hers prompting a huge standoff for hours, I'd say it's time to move. Kenosha is actually nice to look at but Jesus .......

When I was a kid the biggest threat was nuclear annihilation. I remember the duck & cover drills, as if they would do any good other than to allow you to kiss your own ass goodbye. Now it's mass shootings. What's next ? Skynet HKs ?

I understand the need to curb vigilantism and why the Manhattan DA needed to look into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jordan Neely.

Shaken subway riders, military chokeholds, a death certificate: How prosecutors built their case against Daniel Penny

I see the people carrying 'abolish the police' are carrying signs saying Neely was 'beloved street artist'. Well, maybe he was and we should get rid of those pesky police officers.

But let me first ask those folks and anyone else if they've ever been in a subway car when something like this happens? Ever experienced it yourself? I most certainly have and usually it's just wanting money or incoherent rambling. My wife was recently on the 6 train and another street artist entered the car an - no shit - loudly starting raving that he was going to kill white people.

Like many others she left immediately. What, did the man need a hug ? Did the City fail him for lack of after school programs, or is it OK because there are too many white people already? Jesus H Christ.

How would you feel, or if it were your wife or loved one in that situation ? This isn't a case of vigilantism, this is yet another example of a DA with a racial agenda. Kyle Rittenhouse was a vigilante and just asking for trouble, Daniel Penny was minding his own business quietly.

As a reminder of how dangerous people like that can be have a look at this. Another lunatic with a record that should not be running loose but is.

Suspect in New York City stabbing spree that left 3 dead was recently released from jail and had long criminal history

British rock band Sports Team robbed at gunpoint during CA coffee run

British rock band Sports Team was robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight on Monday when they had stopped for coffee in California on the first day of their US tour.
The band — consisting of frontman Alex Rice, guitarists Rob Knaggs and Henry Young, bassist Oli Dewdney, drummer Al Greenwood, and keyboardist Ben Mack — touched down in California ahead of their first gig in Sacramento on Tuesday.
But after stopping at a Starbucks in Vallejo — nearly an hour away from their show — at 9 a.m., the band’s van was ransacked by a group of armed men.

“Just been robbed at gun point 10 minutes into the US tour,” the London-based rockers wrote in an Instagram post Tuesday.

The band’s tour manager bravely confronted one of the robbers, who in turn pulled “out a gun,” according to footage of the ordeal that was filmed from inside the gas station

“Man runs in saying some guys are smashing into a van,” they continued, alongside video footage of the robbery. “Ran out to try to stop it and find masked guys ransacking the van.”

The “Here’s the Thing” hitmakers said that local police advised them to “submit a police report online” as they dealt with the materialistic losses and a smashed passenger window.

The band claimed the brazen thieves stole their laptops, in-ear monitors, cameras, and other personal items, Rice told Sky News.

Sports Team’s instruments were safe and was able to perform at the Goldfield Trading Post in Sacramento Tuesday night.
“They can take our Nintendo Switches but they can never take our ability to play rock songs about motorways,” they quipped.
“In all seriousness pretty shocking how resigned everyone seemed to be to it. ‘It happens.'”

Recounting the incident hours later, the band’s drummer said everyone “ran out, shouting.”

“Somebody opened the door and was like, does anybody have a white Sprinter van? Because you’re being robbed right now,” Greenwood told BBC News.

“Lauren, our tour manager, was slightly ahead of me, and somebody else ran past us in the opposite direction, and said, ‘Careful, he’s holding something.'”

“I really thought I was about to watch someone get shot, because it took a while for our tour manager to realize. In the video, you can hear me screaming at her to get down.”

Authorities continue investigating unusual drone activity around Trump's golf club in New Jersey

Authorities are still investigating mysterious drone activity observed several times in northern New Jersey in recent days, including the vicinity of President-elect Trump's Bedminster golf club.

Multiple videos show drones flying in Somerset and Morris counties over the past few weeks, including Dec. 1 and Dec. 3. In a video from Nov. 25, a Morris County resident named Mike Walsh spotted drones flying over Black River Middle School in Chester.

"I can see three drones right in this view," Walsh says in the video. "I see them coming right this way."

The Morris County border is two miles north of Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, which is located in Somerset County. Drone sightings were also spotted in Bernardsville, Mendham and Parsippany, among other Garden State towns.

On Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed to Fox News Digital that an unusual drone was spotted in northern and central New Jersey skies Nov. 18.

In response, the FAA issued two temporary flight restrictions. One of the flight restrictions involves the airspace above the Trump property and is in place until the end of this week.

"At the request of federal security partners, the FAA published two temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) prohibiting drone flights over Picatinny Arsenal Military Base and Trump National Golf Club Bedminster," the agency said.

The flight restriction affecting Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. Army research center, will last until Dec. 26.

"Safely integrating drones into the National Airspace System is a key priority for the FAA," the FAA told Fox News Digital. "We look into all reports of unauthorized drone operations and investigate when appropriate."

The Morris County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Fox News Digital Wednesday it was investigating the incident in tandem with other agencies. Fox News Digital reached out to the FBI Newark field office, the New Jersey State Police and the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office for additional information.

A Syrian airplane took off from Damascus airport around the time the capital was reported to have been taken by Syria’s rebels, according to data from the Flightradar website, suggesting ousted president Bashar al-Assad may have been onboard.

The aircraft initially flew towards Syria’s coastal region, a stronghold of Assad’s Alawite sect, but then made an abrupt U-turn and flew in the opposite direction for a few minutes before disappearing off the map.
Reuters has not been able to ascertain who was on board.

Two Syrian sources say there is a very high probability that Assad may have been killed in a plane crash as it was a mystery why the plane took a surprise U-turn and disappeared off the map.

Having Assad hanging around would not be a plus for anyone. I think I've watched too many spy thrillers because part of me wants to believe that at a certain point that Russian pilot bit adieu and left the aircraft.

I'd say if he's still alive and headed for Russia he might want to stay on the ground floor of wherever he lives.

Numerous drone sightings in New Jersey frustrating but don’t pose safety concern, governor says

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) — Dozens of drones have been spotted across New Jersey in recent weeks, including near sensitive sites such as a military research facility, which can be frustrating but don’t appear to pose a public safety concern, Gov. Phil Murphy stressed Monday.
The FBI has been investigating reports about several mysterious nighttime drone flights that started occurring last month across central New Jersey and has asked the public for help. Since then, residents have reported seeing drones in other areas.
While speaking at an unrelated bill signing event in Princeton, Murphy noted there were 49 reports of drones on Sunday, mostly in Hunterdon County. The Democratic governor said those numbers included possible sightings and potentially the same drone being reported more than once.

“This is something we’re taking deadly seriously. I don’t blame people for being frustrated,” Murphy said.

It’s unclear who is piloting the drones and why, but federal and state officials have repeatedly stressed that there is no known threat to public safety.

Drones are legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial use, but they are subject to local and Federal Aviation Administration regulations and flight restrictions. Drone operators also must be FAA certified. Most, but not all, of the drones spotted in New Jersey were larger than those typically used by hobbyists.

The flights initially raised questions in part because they took place near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and manufacturing facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster.

Most of the drones have been spotted along coastal areas, and some of the devices were recently spotted over a large reservoir in Clinton.

The FBI asks that residents share any videos or photos they may have of the flights, along with any other relevant information.
U.S. Rep Chris Smith, a Republican, said he was on Long Beach Island Monday night with Ocean County Sheriff Mike Mastronardy to look into the situation.

“Understandably, New Jersey residents are very alarmed at this significant and reoccurring phenomenon, and the tepid response from our state and federal agencies so far is totally unacceptable,” he said. “The people of New Jersey deserve swift and bold action on the part of our state and federal agencies to investigate, assess, and address the situation immediately and to alleviate the growing concerns of our community.”

I can see legislation coming everywhere that drones will be banned for private use. They are already a prolific weapon of war.

Very likely there are people who know more about these things but lacking any sort of cohesive reporting agency or response they have no one or no where to come forward and relate any info to.

If the governor were serious he'd find someone, anyone, to put on point for this and come up with a common reporting system in a jiffy. It's not ET and apparently these things are bigger than commercial drones.

I'd hate to see a reservoir poisoned.

Hell, have the Tedesco brothers roll that Nightcrawler over to have a sniff.

I just watched a cute Christmas movie with wild fight scenes in it.

My nephew could probably be inserted into Ukraine like a Rambo because of all the hyper realistic violence and combat he's absorbed through games. Kid sounds like a Navy SEAL when he's talking in detail about we[pons he's never even seen much less held.

Then he hangs around with his friend scrunched down real low in a car and they each have their 9mm with them because, you know, they need one. Their idols are typically sports and music figures, all of whom seem to spew some sort of violent message.

Actual for-real publicly elected representatives have lauded the lunatic that assassinated a CEO as it somehow being good while at the same time music 'moguls' with as much or more $$$$ are being revealed to be something less than good citizens.

We have to suffer commentary about Luigi Mangione being hot - that's disgusting. How would it sound if that young girl that just did this was deemed to be 'hot' and become a media celebrity ? Would she have a spot on The View ?

Add to all that we've just had several years of the most rancorous division and name calling I've seen and are and are still at it. I've heard talking heads say 'we can't humanize' DT and other. Great, treat others as less than human. just great.

Guns are clearly the problem, not the atmosphere in which they exist. Thankfully mine are all locked up or they might've gone out on their own and done something like this.

These kids have been programmed
