People in India can see the Himalayas for the first time in 'decades,' as the lockdown eases air pollution
(CNN) — People in the northern Indian state of Punjab are reacting with awe at the sight of the Himalayan mountain range, which is now visible from more than 100 miles away due to the reduction in air pollution caused by the country's coronavirus lockdown.

Indians in the city of Jalandhar and the surrounding area have posted photos online of the views from their homes, with some saying they haven't seen the peaks of the Himalayas for decades.
"For the first time in almost 30 years (I) could clearly see the Himalayas due to India's lockdown clearing air pollution. Just amazing," Manjit Kang wrote.

The phenomenon is made possible by a dramatic improvement in air quality in recent weeks, after industries shut down, cars came off the road and airlines canceled flights in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Delhi saw up to a 44% reduction in PM10 air pollution levels on the first day of its restrictions, India's Central Pollution Control Board found. The PM10 standard measures airborne particulates 10 micrometers or smaller in diameter.
The report said that, in total, 85 cities across India saw less air pollution in the first week of the nationwide lockdown.

Meanwhile the air quality in Jalandhar, which sits more than 100 miles from the Himalayas, has been measured as "good" on the country's national index for 16 of the 17 days since the nationwide lockdown was announced.

By contrast, the same 17-day period last year failed to register a single day of "good" air quality -- and in the first 17 days of March this year, only three days saw "good" air quality.

The period has therefore marked an unintended but welcome breath of fresh air for the country's crowded and polluted cities. India is home to 21 of the 30 worst polluted urban areas in the world, according to data compiled in IQAir AirVisual's 2019 World Air Quality Report, with six in the top ten.
The nation has been in lockdown for more than two weeks, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordering "a total ban on venturing out of your homes."

Only essential services have been operational, including water, electricity, health and fire services, groceries stores and municipal services. All other shops, commercial establishments, factories, workshops, offices, markets and places of worship have been closed and interstate buses and metros were be suspended.

The country has reported nearly 6,000 cases of Covid-19, and 178 deaths, according to figures from the Johns Hopkins University.
While the famous mountain range is more visible than in recent memory, it is also more deserted.
Many of its mountains have been closed to climbers for nearly a month, with both the Nepalese and Chinese sides of Mount Everest shutting down in early March.

Frankly, there are aspects of social distancing that I appreciate. I've had enough bad breath, farts and body odor thrust upon me to last a lifetime. This has cut waaaaay down on that.

As Above So Below
Would this be considered a positive thing?...Maybe a not so bad thing?...

Virtual strip clubs are popping up on Instagram with some dancers raking in up to $18,000 as thousands watch - including celebrities like The Weeknd and Diplo

I recently started riding my bicycle again for the first time in over a year. I can take relaxing rides just about anywhere because there is so little vehicular traffic. Venus has been visible just after sunset along with the moon in the crystal clear sky which has significantly less pollution. Gas prices continue to tumble because demand is so low. I just checked my checking account about 2 hrs ago and saw that my $1200 payment is pending and will post on Wed. My neighborhood is almost completely free of panhandlers and noisy drunks. Whenever I see my neighbors or store clerks now we all try to positively encourage each other. I've gotten a lot of things done around the house that I had been putting off. And ... drum roll ... I don't have to feel guilty about putting off going to the dentist.

I just don't understand who would pay for this when there is so much free porn already on the internet (not that I would know about that or anything). In Virginia, in order to help the restaurant industry, they just made it legal for bars to sell alcoholic drinks to go, but why would someone do a booze takeout when you can go to the liquor store instead and get all the booze you want for a fraction of the bar price? You're willing to pay a lot more for a drink at a bar because of the entertainment factor. Seems like it would be the same for strip clubs -- being there is most of the fun.

My heart goes out to people who own restaurants, however. I have one friend who's already stressed out because his restaurant had to close and he can no longer go to his beach house on the NC Outer Banks because the islands are now closed to all non residents, even if they are property owners. That's gotta really suck!

I have lost about 10 pounds so far from just not eating in restaurants all the time. I would guess it's because I tend to eat more and eat less healthy things in restaurants than when I am at home.

There are a lot of people of varying political persuasions who are saying that coronavirus is a vindication of their own politics. Good for them, I guess.

As above, so bellow
another positive is that when compared with Spanish flue back in 1917 this time around we are many times less victims. Somebody said that back in 1917 about 3-5 M people died in a first wave. For coronavirus first wave we are still around 100,000. I don't know what was impact on economy back than.

It's much too early to be doing any victory laps about the number of fatalities; we're already at >200,000 deaths and that number is still skyrocketing - this virus could end up dwarfing the number of deaths caused by the Spanish flu before it's all over:

When you look at the graph on a logarithmic axis, it doesn't look so bad. There is a visible flattening trend. But this is the slowing of the US/European pandemic. When it gets going in other parts of the world we are likely to see a three-humped curve.
