Post-Apocalypse Survival

Dundee

Fading day by day.
I think sooner of later you would have to find or begin to build a community.
Imagine what could be accomplished in that situation with the just the folks here. One of the greatest gifts you all have given me over the years is humility, and the honest realization of how much I don't know, and how much others do. So many times in the early years I would barge into a thread head first guns a blazing, only to find after half a dozen posts how much knowledge others have, and what a twat I was. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Imagine a post apocalyptic world with all of us together. Can you imagine what we could achieve. You folks know so much, I have known most of you now for almost a decade, a few longer than that. And even now, I am still constantly surprised how much knowledge and wisdom you all have. Every day I read a post from someone I know and am amazed by something they say, or can do. So a community would be essential for long term survival I think.
Contributions from a mix of people would be essential for getting the balance right in a new community.

When it comes to surviving, know-how is key. When it comes to rebuilding, knowledge is paramount. When it comes to living...well, I would choose a loyal friend over both.

In a desperate post apocalyptic world and if I was alone I would choose my canine friend over most humans...I'm sure there will be many nice people left in the world but given the situation its much harder to trust a stranger...

I think the availability will depend on the scenario and I would imagine that these would need to be boiled to lessen the bitterness. I would check if the boiled 'tea' that is left has any medicinal uses as well. I certainly wouldn't dispose of any boiled water that I cooked in if potable water were an issue. I'd strain out any solids, bottle it and use it for washing if nothing else.6bf4892c31f7a3017fdd32431d4e1f9b--wild-edibles-healing-herbs.jpg

to reply to a few previous posts,

the sailboat idea is a great one, they make very good fallout shelters if you stay inside and wash the top of the boat off every 6 hours or so (use seawater to wash it off with)
as long as you are in at least 8 foot of water, it will absorb radiation from below you,
with nothing around to catch the dust, you just have to keep your boat clean and stay inside so you are not breathing to much of the air.

as to the food preservation, dried is by far the best way to go for quite a few reasons.
largest one is that it takes way less energy and technology to support.
second is that in most cases it keeps the highest food value for when you go to actually use it.

living through an Apocalypse has been one of my hobbies for a long time now,
best way to do that in my opinion is to start living like that now.
I am set up to farm, and getting way closer to doing it totally off grid
the water supply is my last issue, but with everyone else gone, the water table would get way higher in a year or a bit longer, so I would not need the deep well pump I currently rely on. (or so I hope)
the idea of having to travel to a safe spot may work, but it is way better to already be there in the first place.
