Robots grading student tests?...

More States Opting To 'Robo-Grade' Student Essays By Computer

Here's a little pop quiz.

Multiple-choice tests are useful because:

A: They're cheap to score.

B: They can be scored quickly.

C: They score without human bias.

D: All of the above.

It would take a computer about a nano-second to mark "D" as the correct answer. That's easy.

But now, machines are also grading students' essays. Computers are scoring long form answers on anything from the fall of the Roman Empire, to the pros and cons of government regulations.

Developers of so-called "robo-graders" say they understand why many students and teachers would be skeptical of the idea. But they insist, with computers already doing jobs as complicated and as fraught as driving cars, detecting cancer, and carrying on conversations, they can certainly handle grading students' essays.

.
I must admit, as a teacher, this seems dubious to me. I wonder what criteria the robots are programmed to detect?

Amazon is hiring fewer workers this holiday season, a sign that robots are replacing them
“We’ve seen an acceleration in the use of robots within their fulfillment centers, and that has corresponded with fewer and fewer workers that they’re hiring around the holidays,” May told CNBC on Nov. 2. He added that 2018 is the “first time on record” Amazon plans to hire fewer holiday workers than it did the previous year.

Amazon bought robotics company Kiva Systems for $775 million in 2012, and began using its orange robots in warehouses in late 2014. By mid-2016, it had become clear just how big a difference those robots were making. The little orange guys could handle in 15 minutes the sorting, picking, packing, and shipping that used to take human workers an hour or more to complete. In June 2016, Deutsche Bank predicted Kiva automation could save Amazon nearly $2.5 billion (those savings dropped to $880 million after accounting for the costs of installing robots in every warehouse).

they dont need us anymore once the robots are smart enough
already they kill our food sources to bring our numbers down
we will answer to robots in the future its already happening
i call someone a fucking robot answers!

That will never happen as artificial intelligence would never have a self driven desire. Data and logic could never supply them with one.
They will evolve more and more over time and eventually there will be artificial humans or androids.

But you ever need to shut one down any good EMP will do the trick.

thats something called "big brother"
i can't stop hearing idiots preaching about the dangers of A.I, but its all bullshit, sentient A.I is impossible
the real danger is the government using them for spying
Not that I 'm claiming otherwise, but why do you hold that sentient A.I. is impossible?

It seems to me this can be tampered with far too easily, groups of individuals could be targeted and given intentional lower grades simply by tweaking the criteria they make up, a double whammy...

its impossible to A.I to advance to a sentient level, simply because conscience is a complex thing
Are you invoking something non-physical? A materialist would say that an organic brain is just a sophisticated machine. Sentient A.I. would therefore just be a silicon (or whatever) machine of comparable sophistication to a human brain.

thats the problem, we have no idea if its material or non-material, if it turns out that our brain is just a radio tuned to a "soul" in another dimension, we are out of luck

I wonder if that means, in the future, we could augment ourselves with quad AI processors?

This is just sad. A robot arm that can feed you after you've had to much to eat. I can see this helping people that can't use their arms.

I've been studying Ai, It's a broad Subject. People are currently frightened at what is basically a smoke and mirror show.

When people wonder how Far A.I has come, I'm here to tell you guys, Right now, The pinnacle of Artificial intelligence is still ANI, Artificial narrow intelligence. It's all scripted, It's not a lot different from a chatbot, No matter how much memory or how many responses it has, It's still running off a script. "Those Scary things" are randomly generated from an algorithm based upon forming a grammatically comprehensible sentence with words that apply to the topic.

It's little more intelligence than if a calculator spoke its numbers and sums, We haven't even made it to AGI, Artificial general intelligence, That would be an intelligence with no uncanny valley, It would be like speaking with a human, It wouldn't have to be Einstein, It would just have to convince people it's really thinking. Some Chatbots have passed the Turing test Turing test - Wikipedia, but the Turing test is flawed, It's a test designed to see if a machine can fool a person of average intelligence into thinking they are speaking to a person. Even Eugene Goostman Eugene Goostman - Wikipedia One of the only Bots to ever pass the test was just a cleverly scripted chatbot, Of an eleven-year-old child. including intentional mistakes like misspellings and improper grammar to add to the childlike realism. <---Smoke and mirrors basically

We haven't achieved AGI, Artificial general intelligence, With some scientists believing that General Machine Intelligence will be achieved sometime within the next twenty to five hundred years and That's just the second stage of AI, That we haven't even reached yet, Then there is artificial superintelligence, That's what people worry about, ASI, Is at the very least a hundred years away, That's really wishful thinking.

Now, All that withstanding, WBE, Whole Brain Emulation, IS something entirely different than A.I Mind uploading - Wikipedia While this may sound like Science fiction we have already emulated the brains of incests inside drones and they do work and function as a hive, People can even pay vast amounts of money and attempt to have their mind uploaded, It's not dangerous, What they do is, they monitor your brainwaves, All five states for 48 hours, During this time they will talk to you get your responses try to figure out your personality, And record those things, What results is an image of your mind functioning Like an ISO file or a rom from a cartridge, then they can Emulate this data inside a machines, It's still not conscious and it's not really you, but it's like a Digital imprint of functions they derive from you with the best techniques and equipment available, Someday, They believe they will be able to record all brain function precisely, creating a perfect emulation of the human mind, and it most certainly looks like they may, None the less, These machines will be Copies. It will not be our own consciousness
The Idea of WBE is tricky. It's trying to tackle the A.I Issue while also granting immortality to those who seek it.

For all our study, for all our Technology, For all our money, The Consciousness is this mysterious thing that we not only don't fully understand, We simply can't even begin to comprehend it. What is consciousness? How does it work? Where is it located in the brain? How do we copy it or make it? Consciousness, It's something philosophical, Yet Real, It's something we can't duplicate Because we simply can't understand what exactly it is :/
