Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Generally I like this series but was annoyed by such a long wait since the season 2 cliff hanger. There were a couple of episodes that were real stinkers and I was fully prepared to be disappointed.

No spoilers but having watched the first two episodes I was more than pleasantly surprised. It's no secret episode 1 involves the Gorn and it was a tad 'busy' for me but wrapped it up nicely. Had to watch Arena afterwards.

I have multiple copies of TOS on DVD but haven't bothered to actually hook up a DVD player and just stream whatever's available. In this case Amazon Prime shows TOS as it aired without the later Okuda refinements to the special effects. I prefer them as they were - just getting old I guess.

SNW is very current but not Woke, fortunately.

When I saw the title of episode 2 'Wedding Bells Blues' I thought Oh God, another singing episode or something equally bad.

You'd be hard put to find more of a TOS purist than me and I don't like to see canon violated. In this case they have embraced it and to boot, have included TNG and even the animated series. I was pleasantly surprised. There are a number of cookies they toss in there that just tickled me - but they are subtle and you have to watch for some of them. Watched another TOS episode afterward from which they lifted a few things verbatim but if I mentioned which one that would be a spoiler.

Hard pass for me, I don't care for this show, I think they keep beating a dead horse reviving the Spock era over and over again...Current Star Trek for me is post Voyager, post DS9, post TNG, not revisiting the 'past'...

Well that’s OK. After all these decades there’s no lack of Star Trek to choose from, it’s a buffet.

The TNG movies after First Contact were difficult to watch as were the Chris Pine iterations.

Tom Paris had a holodeck Camaro didn’t he? Do you think he ever took Seven of Nine to a simulated drive in movie in it and …. you know … had his warp core ejected ? :)

Yes indeed, even a couple animated shows to boot lol...

I do not like the Chris Pine movies one bit, and all of that alternate timeline nonsense in an attempt to make sense of and fit those movies into the preexisting Star Trek cannon is utterly ludicrous in my opinion...

The TNG movies after First Contact left me scratching my head, with all of the various stories and possibilities available, they chose those lame arse stories to make into a movie...The third season of Picard with all of the main original characters of TNG coming back for one last hurrah is far better than those earlier movies, even worth rewatching...I have the complete TNG, Voyager, DS9, and Enterprise series in digital format and rewatch various episodes on occasion when I get a craving for some Star Trek lol...I never purchased TOS episodes but I do have all of their movies, Wrath of Khan being my favourite one from that group of movies!...

I think he also had a 50s style rocket ship, playing in some sort of sci-fi holodeck show, all 50s style black and white lol...He even got Seven of Nine to join him on the holodeck for one of those retro 50s skits...

I remember Chaotica and Satan's robot. Enterprise had some good bits too, Jeffrey Combs just owns any character he plays. "Don't push the pinkskins out onto the thin ice....." and of course Weyoun. I love that scene with Worf inconveniently breaking his neck. DS9 was my favorite after TOS and of that In the Pale Moonlight probably the best. Andrew Robinson did a fantastic Garak.

Like all of the series they have their good and bad bits. Years ago we went to The Star Trek Experience while were were in Vegas and that was a hoot. I sat in Quark's bar and had a freaky looking James (Long Island) T. Kirk with movie quality costumed Klingons and Ferengi wandering around. They faithfully recreated the TNG bridge and honestly I always thought the original TV version was a bit dorky - very very empty when you are actually standing in it. It improved eventually.

Star Trek Original Series Set Tour
This is a bit long for me to take a day trip with the critters at home and I suspect I'd have an equal disappointment seeing the TOS sets in person. That isn't my concern - dying of secondary embarrassment is.

I rewatched that episode after your mention of it, yes indeed, a fabulous one!...Actually I'm intent on rewatching that entire season six now, starting tonight with episode one...:smile8:

A lot of the Bajoran story line and 'fire pahs' or whatever was less than fabulous and the story line with Quark's mother was a bit nauseating but they more than made up for it. Didn't it end with General Martok laughing and swilling blood wine amongst the wreckage while his Federation counterparts stood aghast ? That's not PC :)

Trials and Tribble-ations is also a favorite. Terry Farrell - yeee wowza !

Ugh. I know I'm probably the only fan of this series here but what the hell.

Waited two years for the third season and what a disappointment. They have all the right ingredients but can't seem to write well enough to bring them together.

It is entirely TOS oriented as a show with that premise would necessarily have to be but pandering to that demographic isn't sufficient. There were all sorts of neat little Easter eggs sprinkled around and I actually like the latest iteration of these characters and don't mind up to a point but there needs to be some substance behind it and there isn't. It's a bit of a spoiler but personally I laughed when the young/happy/annoying new guy got his face blown off - not in a Charlie Kirk way just as dark humor. Unfortunately that story line is, not to put too fine a point on it, extremely bad and seems to have been the linchpin of this season. Flat out stupid ending.

Apparently there will be one more season of this sometime soon and it's supposed to morph into the first year of Enterprise's original 5 year mission. Paul Wesley grew on me as Kirk and having seen several versions of that character think he's doing a creditable job. Carol Kane is 12 years older than me but it was nice in amongst all the young people to have a representative of an older age group making hilarious wisecracks that only children of the 70s and 80s would really understand. They've already got all the pieces in place and AFAIK this is on the books.
