‘Real-life vampire’ considered so dangerous she was padlocked inside grave with a sickle at her neck: archaeologists

‘Real-life vampire’ considered so dangerous she was padlocked inside grave with a sickle at her neck: archaeologists

Just in time for spooky season, archaeologists have unleashed grisly new information about how a “real-life vampire” spent her final moments.
An elite female “vampire” who died some 350 years ago was first unearthed two years ago at a medieval graveyard in Pień, Poland. Dubbed Zosia by researchers, new illustrations of what the 18-year-old vampiress might have looked like suggest she had fair skin, blue eyes, short hair and a single protruding incisor tooth.
Forensic artist Oscar Nilsson has worked alongside Swedish police forces for decades, modelling the faces of crime scene victims. Now, he is tasked with reconstructing the face of âZosia,â a woman buried as a vampire in 17-century Poland â and hopes to restore her human dignity in the process. 7

Two years ago, the remains of a “female vampire” were uncovered by archaeologists. Miroslaw Blicharski/Aleksander Poznan
Zosia was also laid to reset with a silk cap on her head, which signifies that she was of a high social status.

But her rank wouldn’t save her from being accused of evil: Of about 100 other skeletons at the grave site, only Zosia was covered with a sickle across her neck and a giant padlock on her toe.

Scientists reveal the truth about 'holy grail' cup found at famed 'Indiana Jones' filming location

Professor Dariusz Polinski, who has led recent research on Zosia with study partner Magda Zagrodzka, told the Daily Mail, “It can be assumed that for some reason those burying the woman were afraid that she would rise from the grave. Perhaps they feared she was a vampire.”
Experts believe that the sickle and padlock were fitted to the corpse as a form of “double protection” for villagers out of fear that the “vampire” could rise from the grave; the sickle would’ve ensured that she would be decapitated had she attempted to rise from her grave.
“The sickle was not laid flat, but placed on the neck in such a way that if the deceased had tried to get up most likely the head would have been cut off or injured,” Polinski explained.

Polinski and Zagrodzka worked with Oscar Nilsson, a facial recognition expert who took a digital scan of Zosia’s skull and made a copy using a 3D printer. He used clay to mold new “muscles” of her face, as well as silicon to give new skin.
Bone scans examined by medical investigator Dr. Heather Edgar at the University of New Mexico found an abnormality in Zosia’s breast bone.
The abnormality suggests there might have been a physical deformity that caused her great pain and “marked this person [to others] in a negative way,” being a reason she was feared to be a vampire before she was sacrificed and buried, Edgar told the Times.

With the Swedish-Polish wars ensuing during the time of her death, researchers believe it’s possible that Zosia was Swedish and considered an “unwanted outsider.”
About 30 of the 100 graves were found with signs of being restrained, which ultimately led to the site’s nickname, “Field of Vampires.”
Polinski said that the cemetery was specifically for people who were “excluded from the community;” however, all of the graves were left unmarked and there are no written records regarding the bodies.

Among the other graves include a partially exhumed child, a woman with advanced syphilis, a pregnant woman and a man with a child’s corpse at his feet.
Some bodies were turned face down, some were weighed down with stones and others had coins in their mouths.
“Ways to protect against the return of the dead include cutting off the head or legs, placing the deceased face down to bite into the ground, burning them, and smashing them with a stone,” Polinski told the Daily Mail.
Zosia having the sickle over her neck suggests that she was feared the most by those who killed her.

According to Smithsonian magazine, Eastern Europeans initially became fearful of vampires in the 11th century, believing that “some people who died would claw their way out of the grave as blood-sucking monsters that terrorized the living.”
By the 17th century, “unusual burial practices became common across Poland in response to a reported outbreak of vampires,” Science Alert reported.

Polinkski and Zagrodzka plan to return for more excavations, including a night-time excavation using fluorescent lighting that could uncover new bones.

The latest findings about Zosia, the “real-life vampire,” are the subject of a new two-part documentary called “Field of Vampires,” which will air on Sky History on Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 at 9 p.m.

Kansas Woman, 37, Dies After Backing into Moving Airplane Propeller While Taking Photos

Authorities in Kansas say a woman has died after she backed into an airplane propeller while taking photographs.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said 37-year-old Amanda Gallagher was taking pictures at the Air Capital Drop Zone in Derby, on Saturday, Oct. 26, when she backed into the moving propeller, according to local CBS affiliate KWCH and local ABC affiliate KAKE.

Gallagher was critically injured, and transported to a local hospital where she later died, local NBC affiliate KSNW reported.

More than $8,400 has been raised via GoFundMe to help Gallagher’s family with funeral expenses following the fatal incident.

Abbey Charboneau, who organized the online fundraiser, said Gallagher died “doing what she loved, skydiving and taking pictures.”

“Amanda Gallagher was kind, adventurous, creative and beautiful inside and out,” Charboneau wrote in the description of the fundraiser. “She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend and will be greatly missed.”

A spokesperson for Cook Airfield, where the incident occurred, would not speculate about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young lady who died yesterday,” they said in a post on the airfield’s Facebook page.

Once upon a time in Southern California, a person wore a bear costume to damage luxury cars so friends could allegedly cash in on hefty insurance payouts.

Four people in the Los Angeles area were arrested and charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy after claiming their fancy vehicles were damaged by a bear — only for insurance investigators to discover the destruction was actually caused by a person wearing a bear costume.

The fake beast allegedly broke into a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost on Jan. 8 that was parked just northeast of Los Angeles at Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains, according to the California Department of Insurance Fraud Division.

The owner of the luxury car submitted a video to the insurance company to seemingly prove that the creature wrecked the vehicle, but the Insurance Department didn’t bite.

“Upon further scrutiny of the video, the investigation determined the bear was actually a person in a bear costume,” the California Department of Insurance and Fraud revealed in a statement.

The alleged fraudsters sent insurance companies a video of the fake bear break-in, insurance officials claimed.

Ruben Tamrazian, Ararat Chirkinian, Vahe Muradkhanyan and Alfiya Zuckerman have all been charged with insurance fraud and conspiracy.
“The insurance companies were defrauded of $141,839, because of the alleged fraud committed by the suspects,” the California Department of Insurance stated.
The state insurance department also released footage from what they call “Operation Bear Claw” — detailing the alleged animal production.
Surveillance video showed the alleged beast entering the window of the Rolls-Royce’s passenger side but as it makes its way into the back seat, the animal’s “fur” appeared very shiny and smooth – like it was a halloween costume bought at a store as opposed to a creature in the wild.
Photographs released by investigators revealed the interior of the Rolls-Royce had very straight and parallel marks damaging the seats and doors, which the car owner claimed was from the bear’s claws.
The suspects claimed marks on the inside of cars were bear scratches.

A biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reviewed footage and suggested it was a person in a costume. Later, the bear costume was found in the suspects’ home after a search warrant was executed.
A photograph of the outfit showed what appeared to be a onesie with bear-like fur, attachable paws for the feet and hands and claw-like blades that seemingly could have been used to scratch the seats.

This incident wasn’t the only suspicious claim.
Detectives found two additional insurance claims with two different insurance companies where the suspects used the same date and location for their wild claims.
“Each of those claims involved two different vehicles, a 2015 Mercedes G63 AMG and a 2022 Mercedes E350, and the suspects again appeared to use a bear costume to make it appear that a bear also entered and damaged those vehicles,” the California Department of Insur

Argentina's mysterious spinning island revealed: Isle is shaped like perfect circle but no one knows why it rotates

This is the island which has left experts baffled for years. Known as the 'The Eye', this mysterious green patch of vegetation floats on a clear water lake in Argentina.

Some even think it is a camouflage for a massive alien base that lays quietly beneath the surface - albeit proof of this has not emerged.

Those lucky enough to have travelled there have said it is almost a perfect circle as the movement of the land mass rubs off as it moves around, slowly creating the smooth 360 degree outlines.

So to find out more about the strange island, famous Argentinian documentary director Sergio Neuspiller flew over the the special place and once he landed decided to go on a mission to explore it.

Once there he climbed onto it and waded through the overgrown vegetation. He told the Uruguayan newspaper El Observador: 'We found the perfect circle, as seen from the air.

'The water looked black but in reality it was completely transparent water, something that is almost impossible to find in the Delta.'

He revealed how the bottom of the take was made up of earthy ground which makes it seem dark from afar. He also said the water is a lot colder, which is surprising given the fact most lakes in the area are typically warm. The main reason the perfect circle floats is as a result of water currents slowly shaping and moving the island

In 2016, a team of researchers and filmmakers opened a Kickstarter campaign to help fund their probe into uncovering the mystery of this remote island.

Richard Petroni, a hydraulic and civil engineer from New York who teamed up with Mr Neuspillerm said: 'We have discovered a mysterious island near the Parana river, which, intriguingly, moves and rotates on its own axis.

'Besides, it features a neat circular structure bordered by another perfectly circular streak of water. It's something real and accounts for several supernatural stories bearing connections to UFOs and other paranormal aspects.'

The island was first spotted by the film crew six months ago when they were looking for a place to shoot a film covering other paranormal occurrences, such as ghost and alien sightings, in the area.

7,000-Year-Old Weapon Shows “Unprecedented Degree” of Precision and Technical Mastery

Christopher Plain·December 5, 2024

A study team led by researchers from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) says that a 7,000-year-old weapon kit consisting of two bowstrings believed to be the oldest ever found in Europe and a set of three wood arrows discovered in the Cave of Los Murciélagos in Albuñol, Granada, reveals an “unprecedented degree of precision and technical mastery” in their construction.
When describing the complexity of the bowstrings, which were woven together from the tendons of three different animal species, Raquel Piqué, a researcher in the Department of Prehistory of the UAB and coordinator of the study, said that “this degree of precision and technical mastery, where every detail counts, attests to the exceptional knowledge of these Neolithic artisans.”

The research is also the first to confirm the decades-old theory regarding reed woods’ use in the construction of prehistoric Europe’s arrows.

7,000-Year-Old Weapon Kit Surprisingly Well-Preserved

In the study outlining their discovery, the team notes that the organic arrows and bowstrings were exceptionally well preserved because they had dried out. This desiccated condition allowed the researchers to study their 7,000-year-old weapon kit in unprecedented detail.
First, the team found that the ancient bowstrings were made from animal tendons. When examined more closely, the team found that they were made using braided strands of tendons from three distinct animal species. Testing revealed that the tendons belonged to Capra, a genus that includes several species of goats and ibex; Sus, a genus to which wild boar and pigs belong; and a species of roe deer.
“Not only were we able to confirm the use of animal tendons to make them, but we also identified the genus or species of animal from which they came,” explained Ingrid Bertin, researcher at the UAB and first author of the published article.
Thanks to the exceptionally well-preserved bowstrings, the team could also tell that the braiding method allowed the ancient manufacturer to extend the length of the overall string. Piqué says this technique allowed for the precision manufacture of strong and flexible ropes “to meet the needs of experienced archers.”
“The identification of these bowstrings marks a crucial step in the study of Neolithic weaponry,” Bertin adds.

Arrows Show Advanced Consideration for Performance and Aesthetics

Along with confirming the reed wood arrow hypothesis, the arrows found within the 7,000-year-old weapon kit reveal the designer’s technical sophistication as well as an unexpected concern for the aesthetic.
For example, the arrows were made from a measured combination of willow wood, olive wood, and reed wood. Bertin says this advanced combination of unique materials “offers a hard and dense front section, complemented by a light back, which significantly improves the ballistic properties of the arrows, whose tips are made of wood without stone or bone projectiles.” The arrows were also tied with sinew fibers.

According to the study authors, the arrows were so well preserved that they still had their feathers attached, indicating a possible desire for function and style. The team also found that the arrows were covered in birch bark pitch. Obtained by a controlled “heat treatment” of the bark from a birch tree, the research team believes this material could have been added for its protective properties. They also suspect it could have been used for its decorative properties, “which adds an aesthetic and functional dimension to the equipment.”

Opening New Ways for the Study of Ancient Weaponry

Having successfully characterized the materials and advanced manufacturing techniques revealed by their 7,000-year-old weapon kit, the researchers hope to explore the exact purpose of the technical and aesthetically designed arrows. Bertin said, “Future experiments may clarify whether these arrows could have been used for hunting or close-range combat or whether they could have been non-lethal arrows.”

In the study’s conclusion, the authors say these sophisticated ancient weapons may reveal the technical prowess of the individuals who made them and offer a peek into the minds of the people who used them. The researchers also believe their methods can provide a proven approach to studying weapons technology from this time and region.
“The discoveries contribute to enrich the understanding of the artisan practices and daily life of prehistoric societies and open ways for the study of ancient weaponry, by revealing methods and materials that can be investigated at other European Neolithic archaeological sites,” said Raquel Piqué. “In addition, they provide a better understanding of the symbolic sphere linked to these grave goods from a funerary context, such as is the Cave of Los Murciélagos.”

The study “Iberian Neolithic societies had a deep knowledge of archery techniques and materials” was published in Scientific Reports.

Resistance can be futile when dealing with New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles. b0055b0055b0055

A nearly blind Long Island retiree who hasn’t driven in four years had been crushed with a mountain of tickets across the country – including from the Big Apple – all because of a Star Trek-theme vanity plate she used to have, according to reports.

Huntington resident Beda Koorey, 76, gave up her old license plate, NCC 1701 — the name of the famous starship in the renowned sci-fi series — at the start of 2020 as her eyesight was waning.

But the vanity plate, which was picked by her ex-husband, has caused endless agita due to motorists purchasing the same fake novelty plates for their cars which they get caught up in driving infractions, News 12 reported.

The vanity plates can easily be bought online.
The vanity plates can easily be bought online.Amazon

Those tickets are then mistakenly sent to Koorey, leaving her desperate for a solution.

“The mailman comes. I go, ‘Here comes another ticket,'” she told the station earlier this month.

“And I’m getting phone calls from all over the country.”

She’s received tickets from as far as Montreal, Canada, even though she’s never even been to the country.

The grandmother’s also been hit with $16,500 in fines from New York City for driving infractions she didn’t commit.

“I can’t even sleep. All I see are tickets with cars with my plates on them,” Koorey told News 12. “This is making me sick every single day.”

“I’m blaming the Department of Motor Vehicles because when these people are inputting those plates, it’s coming back to me,” she added.

The fake Star Trek vanity plates can easily be bought on e-commerce businesses like Amazon and replace real plates.

But the nightmare might soon be over after a lawyer volunteered to help the elderly woman.

Kenneth Mollins told CBS 2 that Koorey was still attached to the Star Trek plates even though the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles claimed her name and address were removed.

After reaching out to top officials at the state agency, Mollins told Koorey on Thursday the issue should now be fixed.

The city’s Department of Finance, which collects parking and red camera ticket fines, vowed to work with Koorey to toss the 194 Big Apple tickets against the Long Islander.

Mollins meanwhile is working to get the hundreds of tickets issued in 23 other states to be tossed for Koorey.

I hit 'play' on this out of sheer boredom yesterday, I know it was universally panned. It came as quite a surprise that we both got a kick out of it. I'm not going to tell you it's good, it isn't so it's 5/10. But that means at least half of it was okay and I got a few chuckles out of it.

It doesn't look it from the trailer immediately but it is a Christmas movie. Really. Just not for the tots, there is some language and WWF type violence but that's accepted in 2024. It's not the Burgermeister Meisterburger we remember, but when you consider the Heat and Cold Misers and Mother Nature then leaning into mythology at Christmas time a bit isn't out of place.

When you think back to the old Rankin animations, drugging and ripping the teeth out of a Bumble is hideous. It can no longer feed itself so you've committed it to a life of subservience. Not including Rudolf in any reindeer games and then only because you needed him isn't exactly DEI either. Just putting it in perspective.

I hadn't noted and Woke or DEI nonsense although they obviously made an effort to diversify the cast, even across species which was something to see. We're all inured to special effects but that polar bear Rodrigues, oh God that's impressive as are the reindeer. Not the Coke bear at all.

So have fun with this one, and be good for goodness' sake.

Terrifying new developments in mysterious figure seen by side of dark and lonely road after multiple smashes

A mysterious figure spotted by the side of a dark Nebraska road after multiple crashes is feared to have taken a terrifying new step. The individual, who has been spotted immediately after four separate incidents, is believed to have made hoax calls posing as one the victims to a news station that reported on them. WOWT reported that three voicemails, all from the same man, were left with the station pretending to be one of the victims they spoke with asking that the story be taken down.

It comes as investigators visited the home of an unidentified person of interest, although they have yet to make any arrests. Garrison Beach and his wife Skylar had spoke with the outlet last week about how they had been travelling on Highway 36 outside of Bennington when they crashed. The couple had to swerve to avoid a piece of metal seemingly left in the middle of the asphalt, and ended up down a ravine. As they made their way back up the incline they were met with an odd figure who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, unnerving the pair.

One of the voicemails shared by the outlet say: 'Hello, this is Garrison Beach and I would like the news article about the accident to be removed.' The real Garrison Beach said: 'I just think it’s crazy that we’re at the point of someone calling in and impersonating me on the phone to try and get the story taken down. 'That clearly wasn’t me making the phone call. Someone has something to do with the accident or was spooked about the awareness this has risen, and wants it gone.'

The couple had a small interaction with the man who has been seen on at least four occasions after crashes on the road. The man asked them to wait for emergency services inside his own vehicle, which they had spotted at an intersection with the lights on - seemingly watching the road. The unnerved couple declined, with Skylar telling the outlet: 'It was just very odd. He was right there when we got out of the car. 'Since our car was in the ravine, no one would know we were down there. It was odd how fast he showed up, as if he watched the whole thing happen. 'As soon as we said, "No, we’re going to wait for the police", he kind of just walked back to his car.

'It was pretty scary. I remember screaming and I wasn’t sure when we’d start rolling, but we were fortunate to walk away from the accident.' Garrison believes it was the same individual they spoke with that night who left the voicemail, saying the voicemail sounded similar. On Wednesday morning, local officers investigating the mysterious happenings served a search warrant.

Numerous deputies searched a Bennington home of a person of interest in the case in the hopes of finding evidence that points to the weird happenings. The person of interest sat in a police car while deputies searched the property and was allowed back inside after two hours. No arrests have yet been made. The man had left the scene before the couple could get his name, but it appears this type of behavior has happened before on the exact same stretch of road. Kyle Sorenson had an almost identical story from the Beach couple, with his vehicle striking a kids bike that had been left in the middle of the road. Sorenson recalled to the outlet that immediately after he collided with it, the man appeared behind him in his vehicle. He told the outlet: 'I hit a kid’s bike that had been left right in the center of the road. As I looked in my rearview mirror, I saw someone sitting on Pawnee Road. 'They pulled up behind me and it was this individual saying he was checking to make sure we were okay.'

After seeing little damage on his vehicle, Sorenson left the scene unscathed but his wife later spotted the man following a car that was leaking oil on the highway. Sorenson added: 'In two weeks, this has been three incidents where he was immediately the first person on the scene.' Speaking of the voice messages, Sorenson told the outlet: 'Yeah that [voicemail] definitely sounds like the same person who pulled up behind me.' Capt. Eric Sellers with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said that they do not believe abduction is the motive in the case. He said: 'They’re the first person there to help out and call 911, so in their mind, they’re a hero, but they are causing these crashes.' Sellers said that the person is not breaking the law by impersonating Beach, but if he made the same call to the police it would be a crime.

Hidden details in a historic map have helped shed light on one of the great mysteries in American history.
The 16th-century map provides insights into the fate of the settlers who formed the so-called Lost Colony of Roanoke.
This small settlement of more than 100 English colonists was founded on Roanoke Island off the coast of what is now North Carolina in 1587.But the colonists seemingly vanished shortly after its founding due to unknown circumstances.
The map in question—created by a governor of the colony, John White—may hold a vital clue that could reveal what happened to at least some of the colonists. The map—known as "La Virginea Pars"—was created by White to document the region.

An examination of the map by researchers revealed a paper patch where it appears as if someone had covered up a small section to correct a mistake but never painted anything over the top.

This patch—corresponding to modern-day Bertie County, less than 100 miles inland from Roanoke Island—was found to conceal a red-and-blue symbol resembling a fort.

This hidden marking suggested that the site marked on the map was home to a previously unknown English settlement.

Follow-up investigations of the site conducted by researchers from the First Colony Foundation found no evidence of a significant settlement, or a fort for that matter. But the team did uncover several English artifacts, including pottery, adding to similar prior finds at the site.
According the foundation, these finds align with the hypothesis that some of the colonists relocated to this location after fleeing from Roanoke Island, potentially explaining one aspect of the mystery, Popular Mechanics reported.
While the site may not have housed all of the Roanoke colonists, it is possible that it served as a refuge for a few of them. Questions still remain though and continued archaeological investigations may reveal more about what happened to this group of early settlers.

What is the Lost Colony of Roanoke?

In 1587, under the leadership of John White, more than 115 English settlers—including men, women and children—established a colony on Roanoke Island.
This endeavor was England's second attempt to establish a permanent settlement in the New World.
Shortly after their arrival, the colonists faced shortages of supplies, prompting them to persuade White to return to England to procure necessities.
Due to various delays, including the Anglo–Spanish War, White's return was postponed, and he did not make it back to Roanoke Island until 1590.

What Do We Know About What Happened?

Upon his return in 1590, John White found the Roanoke settlement deserted, with no sign of the colonists and none of the settlement's structures or supplies remaining.
The only clue was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a post and the letters "CRO" etched into a tree. There were no indications of a struggle or battle.
White interpreted these carvings as a possible message indicating that the colonists had relocated to Croatoan Island (now Hatteras Island)—home to the Croatan people.
However, adverse weather conditions and other challenges prevented White from conducting a thorough search of the area, leaving the fate of the colonists unresolved.

What Questions Are Still To Be Answered?

Despite various theories and ongoing research, several questions about the Lost Colony of Roanoke remain unanswered.
Firstly, did the colonists assimilate with local Native American tribes? Some historians propose that the settlers integrated with nearby tribes, such as the Croatan or Hatteras people, to survive.
Archaeological evidence, including English artifacts found in Native American sites, supports this theory, but conclusive proof is still lacking.

X-ray scans and AI have meant the inside of ancient scroll can be revealed
A badly burnt scroll from the Roman town of Herculaneum has been digitally "unwrapped", providing the first look inside for 2,000 years.
The document, which looks like a lump of charcoal, was charred by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD and is too fragile to ever be physically opened.

But now scientists have used a combination of X-ray imaging and artificial intelligence to virtually unfurl it, revealing rows and columns of text.
More work is needed to make the scroll fully legible to decipher its contents, but the team behind the project say the results are very promising.

The ancient scroll was burnt to a crisp by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius

"We're confident we will be able to read pretty much the whole scroll in its entirety, and it's the first time we've really been able to say that with high confidence," said Stephen Parsons, project lead for the Vesuvius Challenge, an international competition attempting to unlock the Herculaneum scrolls.
Some letters are already clearly visible in the ancient text and the team believes it's a work of philosophy.

Some Greek letters can be seen on the papyrus scroll

Hundreds of carbonised scrolls were discovered in Herculaneum, which like its neighbour Pompeii was buried beneath metres of volcanic ash.
In the past, some of the documents, which are made from a thick paper-like material called papyrus, were prised open but they crumbled into pieces.
The University of Oxford's Bodleian Library holds several of the scrolls. Thought to be unreadable, they had been left untouched for decades.
"We've never been convinced before that any of the techniques would be safe enough or effective enough to get any information from the scrolls," explained Nicole Gilroy, head of book conservation.
But the promise of a hi-tech solution prompted the team to get one of the precious scrolls out of storage.

Diamond Light Source used X-ray imaging to see inside the scroll

It was placed in a specially made case and taken to Diamond Light Source in Oxfordshire.
Inside this huge machine, which is called a synchrotron, electrons are accelerated to almost the speed of light to produce a powerful X-ray beam that can probe the scroll without damaging it.
"It can see things on the scale of a few thousandths of a millimetre," explained Adrian Mancuso, director of physical sciences at Diamond.
The scan is used to create a 3D reconstruction, then the layers inside the scroll - it contains about 10m of papyrus - have to be identified.
"We have to work out which layer is different from the next layer so we can unroll that digitally," said Dr Mancuso.
After that artificial intelligence is used to detect the ink. It's easier said than done - both the papyrus and ink are made from carbon and they're almost indistinguishable from each other.
So the AI hunts for the tiniest signals that ink might be there, then this ink is painted on digitally, bringing the letters to light.

Handling the charred scroll is a difficult job - they are extremely fragile
"We can tell the entire scroll is full of text," said Stephen Parsons.
"Now we can work on making it show up more clearly. We're going to go from a handful of words to really substantial passages."
Last year, a Vesuvius Challenge team managed to read about 5% of another Herculaneum scroll.
Its subject was Greek Epicurean philosophy, which teaches that fulfilment can be found through the pleasure of everyday things.
The Bodleian's scroll is likely to be on the same subject - but the Vesuvius team is calling for more human and computing ingenuity to see if this is the case.
For Nicole Gilroy, the work is providing a link to the past.
"I just love that connection with whoever collected them, whoever wrote them, whoever rolled those scrolls up and put them on the shelves. There's a real human aspect to it that I just think is really precious," she said.

Still a pretty horrifying thing to happen to someone. The article conveys unconfirmed reports that it was probably a bullshark. I would be more wary of a bullshark than a great white, even, with their propensity to attack humans.
