I'm sort of open to any punishment solution that will discourage this sort of terrorism since just good policing and letting the government snoop through all Americans online traffic hasn't solved it (instead they spend their time snooping on domestic political opponents).
Many people were maimed for life by this attack. The punishment should fit the crime.

If you wanna punish him. He should receive professional medical and psychological treatment until he realises what he has done.. The remorse and feelings of guilt will hunt the poor bastard for the rest of his pathetic life..

I've used a wood chipper before and I am pretty sure he will have some feeling close to remorse when he faces the business end of a wood chipper.
At the very least he will question some of his life choices.
And the wood chipper isn't the statement it is the 10 pounds of pig manure.
The other benefit is adding them to a general compost heap eliminates the creation of a monument to a martyr.

I'm still waiting for one of the Australians to chip in on how we need to ban Home Depot trucks, pellet guns, and paintball guns and point out how Australians don't have these sorts of incidents since they don't have Home Depot truck rental.

The real solution is to ban bike lanes and those freeloading bikers who don't pay gas tax.
If there were no bike lanes in New York this man wouldn't have had a target to attack.
And yeah, every time there is another Moslem attack the pro-moslem left (who are perfectly willing to throw gays and women under the bus) are suspiciously silent.

Deranged people do deranged shit. Banning Muslims, refugees, guns, political opinions, etc. will never prevent that from happening.
Example, we could outlaw Muslims, deport the whole lot of them, let no more in ever. And in 2017 we still see 59 people die in Vegas, 1 in Anitoch, 1 in Charlottesville, 1 in Alexandria, 1 in Denver, and 5 in Ft. Lauderdale. All considered terrorism. (2 of those attacks were due to radical islamic terrorism, but neither were ethinic middle easterners or refugees. One white, one Hispanic)
We can outlaw guns, do a massive gun grab like the Aussies, get every last one. And boom, 8 people still get run down in Manhattan.
Short of banning human contact I'm at a loss as to what our nation can do about this stuff. But partisan scapegoating is not the answer in my opinion. Nor is banning everything or taking away any more freedoms or rights.

I just got though multiple repetitive conversations with one of the Australians about how gun bans stop murder as a result of a previous incident.
The only guns in this story were by the police (and they shouldn't have shot him since he obviously had an pellet gun and a paintball gun).
The only weapon involved was a rental truck and the only murder venue a bike lane.
Should we ban rental trucks and bike lanes?
The previous incident we still (over a month later and counting) don't know why the hell he did it.
This incident is different. We know why he did it, police found a note, police have talked to him. In fact the suspect (who's name means "sword of Allah") is reportedly bragging in the hospital about how many people he killed.
My wood chipper wasn't entirely serious, but I'm starting to rethink that.
I am concerned that we actually may be dealing with animals and their fate should be determined by what would be a deterrent. The old school notions of rehabilitation or punishment are yesterdays news.
As a side note, capital punishment should be a more mainstream solution than it is. Rehabilitation is based on the theory that if we throw money and programs at inmates we can "rehabilitate" them which means they will create fewer victims (I couldn't get good numbers for how many fewer). Fewer victims is still greater than zero.
However while writing this, I see references to how Islam is like brain washing. Perhaps if Islam is brainwashing we can reverse the process. Publicly make the punishment for moslem terrorism brainwashing. Electrodes and everything. And announce that the brainwashing will continue until said terrorist is converted to a conservative Christian.

I had to clarify the spelling of Houston Street thinking I made a mistake in an earlier post. The street and city name are spelt the same, but the street is pronounced (house-ton). There's some inconsistencies. Early reports said there were shots fired. The official report claims he had a paintball & pellet gun. I think people are familiar enough with guns to know the difference. Was there another suspect? The news said Saipov requested an ISIS flag be brought to him in the hospital.
