Things You Thought You Knew.

Hi guys, just wondered if anyone would like to share anything that you thought you knew to be correct, and might even have preached this fact to friends and family members only to find out at a later date that you were wrong? [in some of my cases,.. for years. lol] ... for instance in my case i was always under the impression that it was a truism that I was told by some 'expert' on a TV documentary when I was just a kid ...that although being the ocean's most powerful, awesome and lethal predator , the Orca otherwise known as the Killer-whale was in fact harmless to mankind. ... and further to this, "there had been no cases in man's recorded history in which a killer-whale had harmed a human being." ... I clearly remember the 'expert' saying this ..with the codicil that "there have been the odd tale from murky ancient folk-law that claim the odd accidental non-fatal injury that was caused by irresponsible behaviour by the injured party and completely accidental-identification by the Orca, and as soon as the offending whale realised it's mistake , would completely back off and leave the foolish victim alone".
This would have been in the early 70's sometime, it was told by a seasoned whale expert ... and was on TV so had to be true... right? ... and so armed with this great knowledge I went ahead for the next forty-odd years boasting this knowledge to my friends, family, my own 'dad-knows-best-kids' and practically anyone else that would listen.
... So can you imagine just how gullible and downright foolish I felt when I saw the 'Blackfish Documentary' on TV a couple of years back? ... ... ... this is a YT much shortened down version of the 90 mins-or-so version that opened my eyes a few years back, but will give you the flavour of what I mean.

God my kids had a good laugh at Daddy-know-all!
There's probably more, and perhaps even better instances of my erroneous-knowledge-passing that will come to mind if this thread thrives , but I was just reminded about this by my son who just asked me to take a look at this Youtube clip that he found fascinating ...
...of course it's not a shark..but an orca, and i'm not even sure that the clip is legitimate because I haven't seen it before... but it just reminded me of that 'Blackfish revelation' and prompted me to start this thread.

... I surely can't be the only one that has been humbled when finding that 'I didn't actually know what I know' can I?.... So please take the time to share [no matter how trivial it seems] and might find it a bit of fun having a laugh at ourselves!

Cheers.

Well, ... there you go, it turns out that it wasn't very hard to find out that 'the man on the beach' clip was in fact not real at all! ... and was a scene from a Spanish commercial a couple of years ago. :biggrinn8: ...

.... but the Blackfish documentary is very-much sound. [i think lol.]

Cheers.
