Thing was, the man was also brilliant and extremely competent in most respects. He was the one who quickly recognized the significance of the Solomon Islands and implemented Operation Watchtower against apathy and political resistance. Granted, one doesn't know weather that video portrays the whole picture for one to cast the judgement. But at least, if presented information is close to exhaustive, it literally presents gross misjudgement that cost many servicemen their lives and substantial loss of property.

One example of many from many different sources of all nations in that conflict.
 
Fair enough. But only recently I bumped into that principle that government employees have implicit immunity to their own mistakes. Essentially, its more dangerous for them to make loyalty mistakes, then to blatantly damage property and harm human life.

That is completely contrary to my education as an engineer, and even contrary to my experience in attempting to run business. I mean, 90% of adults will be punished economically if making any kind of mistakes. In a business mistakes directly lead to bankruptcy. And the whole legal system, in any country, is completely free to mumble, stumble, drag their feet, and generally be totally unproductive and damaging. In a broader sense, practically all the productivity improvements that are created by science and technology are immediately destroyed by bloating of bureaucracy.

One of these cases was from US, but it could had been from anywhere else. Police chased a armed robber who hid in an residential house. Police smashed that house and house owner sued police for damages. Police responded that they are free to destroy any property because as law enforcement agency they can't be afraid of punishment when enforcing law. I find that completely wrong because they could had easily avoided to smash that house and simply coerced that the armed robber.

In another case public attorney deliberately hid from judge circumstances that were in favour of the defendant, and defendant got 5 years in a penitentiary because judge was not informed about mitigating aspect. Even worse judge refused to listen defendant attorneys' arguments, which is most likely illegal. Practically defendant didn't receive fair trial.

From my engineering perspective that's is as if I wrongly designed building's structure, and building collapsed killing everybody inside. And I walked away free, because "I can not be afraid of punishment" when doing my job, or I have a right to my subjective opinion ??? Honestly, what a nice and cosy job government people have.

In very large organizations there are always places to hide, burrow in like a tick and feed without returning any benefit. Governments tend to breed long term institutional stupidity; there is no competition just keep showing up and you're employed for life and there is very little that can be done, generally.

I saw plenty in places like Metro North Railroad, a subset of the truly massive Metropolitan Transit Authority. Why send just one man when you have six to keep busy? It took a series of accidents that destroyed equipment and killed several people before oversight was given to an outside organization. In the end what happened was less about efficiency or safety and more a cost cutting measure, a way to break certain unions. Unions are another hot mess that rarely suffer the consequences of their behavior. I am thinking of the United Federation of Teachers and the generation of overly sensitive window lickers they seem to have produced as well as the sick bastards they sideline for various reasons yet still pay them indefinitely no matter what they've done. .

I saw an example of institutional stupidity yesterday. We went to a Home Depot and noted that there were tons of snow and ice poised to slide off the angled roof right in the front of the store where people come and go, enough to seriously hurt someone or severely damage a vehicle. Those stores have several rolling accordion style gates and no doubt someone was told to go out and place them in front and they did - except the gates were nowhere useful and accomplished absolutely nothing. I doubt anyone in 'management' bothered to go check themselves to see if the task were done. In fact, assuming those gates weren't crushed my snow and ice I guarantee at some point an employee who needs a gate to shut down an aisle inside for lift equipment could and would just come take one of them if it were convenient.

If I were a small hardware store owner I'd look at that and realize my livelihood is at stake, I could rightfully have my ass sued off in the event of an injury. Not to mention the fact that I actually don't want to see anyone hurt or anything destroyed when it's so easily prevented. If I had such gates of course I'd place them more intelligently so they actually created a safe zone, but more than that if the store were full of roof rakes, shovels, lumber, caution tape and all the other crap like that one is I'd certainly use some to cordon off the area. But no, the corporate drones that run the place realize that even if something happens they will not be held accountable (unless a higher up needs a blamestorm) and the legal department is someone else's problem.

Essentially, we need second government to supervise first government. And then a third government to supervise the second one, and so on. Really nasty.

I have this example. A friend of mine is investment manager. He invests in a particular type of small hydroelectric dams for electricity generation back in Serbia. Serbia is hilly, there are lots of small towns, and there are lots of small creeks in valleys between these hills. So towns get cheap electricity and investors get steady profits.

Anyhow, he told me that it costs on a technical side about x6 months and €150,000 to build the small dam, small shed and put a generator into it, But now wait for it, on the paperwork side it costs €450,000 and it took x2 years. I find it totally staggering. For price of totally useless paperwork one can actually build x3 additional small hydroelectric dams for that small city to get extra cheap electricity for it's people and businesses. This is all in Serbia at Serbian prices.

Now US. I was watching "Shark's Tank" on YT, and there was this inventor who created some device that helps producing more energy from hydroelectric dams, and as always there were few of these business investor guys. So, when inventor finished his presentation one of business guys literarily jumped at inventor's throat and delivered a detailed cost and time breakdown for electricity generation. And what stunned me, was that time for engineering development and for paperwork the same as in the Serbia. Practically this business guy said that it takes x2 years to do paperwork and I forgot how much it costs. I know it sound silly to compare US and Serbia, but shared thing was that it takes x4 times more time and money to do paperwork then to build the hydroelectric facility.

I personally think that some bureaucracy is necessary, but I would say that it is reasonable that paperwork doesn't cost more than about 20% of building cost, and that it should not take longer then x3 months. But for paperwork to take x2 years and to cost 400% more then facility itself, is soul crushing. Just imagine that there would be x3 - x4 times more electricity supply if less money was wasted on paperwork.

Agreed. When we recently looked into building a house I was daunted by the process, all the inspections and approvals and fees etc etc but they really do serve a good purpose. I imagine areas that lack these things have their share of tar paper shacks and unsanitary conditions. In NYC right now a similar process was already a constipated nightmare and is being made worse by the incoming socialists. We have a relative who owns an apartment that we have been suggesting gets sold now before it can't be, but of course that falls on deaf ears.

What you described about those hydro plants is what's going on with local solar farms. We have the option to buy into them and I would but they are being strangled to death by the bloated incompetent state administration. The process kills any potential economic benefit.

There is a tipping point where common sense falls into the pit of bureaucracy and it's a matter of scale. In my small county the real estate process I mentioned makes sense and works reasonably well although it's still prone to the personalities, stupidity and general crapulence all human endeavors have.

I am positive that even in the Apollo program when we had men on the Moon NASA still had a bunch of thick headed nitwits in their midst to contend with. The perfect foil for AI becoming Skynet is likely human intransigence and some genetic need to behave in nonproductive ways. .
 
It's sad to hear they want to retire these, doesn't sound like it makes sense as we have other aircraft that need a permissive environment to operate in. Proven, comparatively inexpensive and already in service. They really do remind me of their namesake P-47s or better yet Douglas Skyraiders for their sheer power and the role they play. You'd think they would be pretty good medicine for those crappy speedboats the Iranians like to run around in

A-10 Warthog Protects Mine-Hunting Littoral Combat Ship In Persian Gulf Drill

The A-10, now in the twilight of its career, is uniquely suited to protect naval assets from lower-end threats, such as swarms of Iranian small boats.

We just got some interesting photos out of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) showing A-10C Warthog ground attack jets exercising with the USS Santa Barbara (LCS-32), an Independence class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) that is currently deployed in the region. At a glance, the two assets seem somewhat strangely paired, but the images highlight a long-standing mission of the A-10, and one that has grown far more prominent in the twilight of its career.

A-10s are currently forward deployed to Jordan, where they primarily fly missions over Syria, striking ISIS-related targets and providing close air support and overwatch to the roughly 1,000 troops still deployed there. The Warthog’s current work in Syria is particularly notable because the aircraft’s future is very much in doubt. As it sits, the Air Force intends to retire the A-10 fully no later than 2029, but that day could come much sooner.

The irony here is that the A-10’s continued use in the Middle East goes against a prevailing narrative that the Warthog needs to go because its utility is limited on the modern battlefield. This argument is not without merit, but it assumes that every tactical air asset in the inventory needs to be able to fight on the front lines on day one of a conflict with a peer-adversary, and that there are not many other tasks needing to be done beyond firing the shots at the ‘tip of the spear’ during such a conflict. It’s also worth noting that the A-10 remains the least expensive tactical jet to operate in the USAF’s stable.

Regardless of the A-10’s impending fate, its ability to deliver rapid, highly precise attacks on small, fast-moving targets, and its ability to loiter for extended periods while soaking up small arms fire, means that its talents can be applied directly to the maritime domain. This is especially true when it comes to countering small boats that can pose a big danger to much larger ships. Such asymmetric dangers are only amplified for ships operating in tight, complex littoral environments, where threats can emerge quickly and attack in large packs, leaving even the most powerful warship’s defenses overwhelmed.

The threat of small boat attacks is something we have discussed regularly for many years, but it has become much more urgent since the advent and rapid advancement of unmanned surface vessels. Iran and its proxies pioneered these weapons, at least in a modern sense, in relatively crude form. Back in 2017, a Houthi drone boat successfully struck a Saudi frigate in the Red Sea, heralding in a new era of naval combat.

Since then, these capabilities have evolved drastically, largely thanks to the war in Ukraine, where the USV has become a major multi-faceted threat that leverages and combines new technologies to achieve exponentially greater effects. Ukraine’s use of kamikaze USVs was so brutally effective that it resulted in the bulk of Russia’s vaunted Black Sea Fleet running from its crown jewel home port in Crimea to safer (but not fully safe) berths on Russia’s western Black Sea coast. Today, Ukrainian drone boats work in the kamikaze role for attacks on ships and shoreline targets and as drone delivery systems for inshore attacks, among other missions.


That takes us to today and the current predicament in the Middle East. The United States and Iran may go at it unlike ever before. As always, fears that Iran could mine the Strait of Hormuz, and areas of the Persian Gulf and the North Arabian Sea, are relevant. For ships operating in these areas, especially U.S. Navy vessels, the danger posed by swarms of fast boats belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), some of which carry missiles themselves, is also highly palpable. This is where the Santa Barbara’s unique mission comes into play — it’s primarily a mine hunter. These ships have fully taken over that role since the sunset of the U.S. Navy’s Avenger class mine hunting vessels, the last of which had recently departed the Middle East once and for all.

While mine hunting is a critical mission set, keeping the mines from being dropped in the water in the first place is a very high priority mission, too, and something the A-10 can really help with. Interdicting boats before they can sow the minefields would be an ideal use of the Warthog’s talents.

For the mines that are already in the water, allowing the Santa Barbara to do its mission without getting destroyed by small boats would be an absolutely top tasking. These ships would become Iran’s top targets, and they would be forced to work right in the highest threat areas where the mines were laid. Their maneuvering would also be restricted. All of this makes force protection for these vessels absolutely essential. The A-10 is a uniquely capable asset for providing overwatch and close air support for the LCS.

Beyond that, any ship in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea that can be seen as unfriendly is at risk of small boat attacks if a major war to break out between the United States and Iran.

A-10s have always had a latent maritime application as it is baked into its basic capability set. However, in the 2000s, as the threat of small boat attacks rose to prominence, especially after the 2000 attack on USS Cole and the 2002 Millennium Challenge war game that highlighted just how big of a problem this threat was, they slowly began to train more actively for it. By the 2010s, this was a publicized mission for the A-10. You can read all about this in this previous post of ours.

Today, we see the A-10 being used for maritime force protection in surprising ways. One of the most unique examples of this is tasking Warthogs to provide overhead defense for U.S. Navy Ohio class ballistic missile submarines while transiting in and out of port. This is where these incredible vessels, which are designed to basically disappear into an acoustic black hole far out to sea, are most vulnerable. The fact that they pack a nuclear powerplant and dozens of the world’s most powerful nuclear warheads that sit atop solid fuel rockets means that an attack could have impacts far beyond losing a submarine, which would be massively tragic in its own right. So, with this in mind, the A-10 has applied its talents in a bit of an experimental manner to guard America’s most prized strategic underwater assets.

In addition, the A-10 is gaining a few extra capabilities just before it heads out to pasture once and for all. This includes the ability to use laser-guided Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II) rockets in the air-to-air realm. This could also be a big help to ships under threat in the Middle East, especially mine-hunters, which Iran would attempt to pummel with its one-way attack drones if it gets a chance during a time of war. Pods of APKWS rockets can also be extremely useful in plinking small fast boats, as they can drastically increase the number of engagements a single Warthog can make without needing to rearm. It can also help the A-10 make precision attacks on swarms of boats relatively quickly if need be.

The A-10’s usual menu of cluster bombs and other weapons can also help stop swarms of small boats before they do major damage to nearby ships. Its massive gun can also be put to use. Finally, Warthogs are finally getting Link 16 connectivity, which will greatly help with their situational awareness and the ability to share targeting info with all types of platforms on the fly. This would be a huge help for making quick sense out of a complex battlespace, and especially when it comes to shooting down aerial drones.

So there you have it, the unlikely pairing of Littoral Combat Ships and A-10s is one borne out of logic as much as necessity. Hopefully this team won’t ever have to be put to the test, but that is an increasing possibility as relations between Washington and Tehran continue to erode.
 
It seems that Japan had built a working rail gun for ships. They sent an engineer to pour through data in a failed US Navy's program, and then Japanese decides to scale their requirements down, thus reducing engineering challenges. So they ended with only 40 mm, 2", railgun, which works.

How could you drop something with a face like this out of a plane?

On Mar. 21, 1962 a B-58 Hustler from the U.S. Air Force erupted in flames as a large, bright red capsule shot out of it, carrying a passenger to safety. But the passenger wasn’t a pilot, and the plane wasn’t crashing. The event was a test of the B-58’s experimental ejection capsules and the occupant of the capsule was a bear.

The Air Force had been struggling to figure out a safe way for pilots to eject at supersonic speeds. Initially, they had tested new ejection seat designs by hiring people they recruited out of unemployment lines to act as test dummies.

The Air Force soon switched to using live animals for the tests, including six bears and a chimpanzee. At first, the bears and other animals tested ejection seats and capsules on rocket sleds. Once the Air Force was relatively sure of the design, they began flying the aircraft and ejecting the animals at altitude.

The animals were given drugs and rigged with sensors before being placed in the ejection capsules.
Most were fine, if a bit loopy, when they landed.

There was one fatality among the animals during testing. One bear had a brain condition that wasn’t detected prior to the flight and the physical strain during the ejection killed the animal. Two other bears suffered minor fractures and bruising during their flights.

Unfortunately, the Air Force needed to be sure that there were no hidden injuries before they returned to human subjects and ordered autopsies, which resulted in the deaths of the animals that had otherwise survived testing.

The Only Navy Warship Authorized to Fly a Pirate Flag at Sea

Although there are dozens of active Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers in the U.S. Navy's fleet, there's something special about the USS Kidd. It doesn't have any secret technology or weapons (that we know of), and its capabilities are the same as any other of its class. The standout feature that tends to capture the attention of even the most landlubberly civilian is the massive Jolly Roger that the Kidd is often seen flying from its mast.

The USS Kidd's pirate flag, the infamous skull and crossbones that hearkens back to the Golden Age of Piracy that spanned the 17th and 18th centuries, is the only one the U.S. Navy has ever allowed to fly on one of its ships. And like most bizarre things that happen inside the Navy, it starts with an honored tradition, one dating back to World War II.


Pirates these days don't really think about hoisting a Jolly Roger to announce their intentions. They usually just go in for the killing and stealing. So if a U.S. Navy vessel flies the old pirate flag when returning to port (and some do), it's all in good fun. No one thinks the submarine USS Jimmy Carter, which was spotted flying the pirate banner back in 2017, is actually out there terrorizing sea lanes and stealing doubloons.

But in the Navy, old habits die real hard. There's no better example than the fact that U.S. sailors wore bell-bottom trousers until the 21st century. So even though most of its ships are more likely to kill pirates than join them, the Navy brass still frowns on making light of lawlessness at sea by raising the Jolly Roger.


Yet, not so much with the USS Kidd. The Kidd gets a pass because of tradition, the most powerful force in the Navy. Tradition is what keeps Navy coffee mugs unwashed and sailors eating cherries out of belly buttons (you're gonna have to ask a "shellback" about that one; don't Google it at work).

The USS Kidd is named for Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who was killed aboard the battleship USS Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the first American flag officer to die in World War II. As he was the commander of Battleship Division One, he ran to the bridge of Arizona, his flagship, to take command during the outset of the surprise attack. He died aboard the ship with 1,175 of his sailors and Marines, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Rear Adm. Kidd picked up the nickname "Cap" while attending the U.S. Naval Academy, a reference to the infamous privateer-turned-pirate Capt. William Kidd, who was executed for the crime in 1701. When a Fletcher-class destroyer was named for Rear Adm. Kidd in 1943, its crew immediately adopted the pirate theme, with the blessing of Isaac Kidd's widow, Inez. Inez Kidd even convinced the Navy to formally give the USS Kidd express permission to fly the pirate flag.

That first crew of the Kidd began calling themselves "the Pirates of the Pacific," picking up downed naval aviators and returning them to their carriers in exchange for a "ransom" of ice cream. That initial USS Kidd, which served the U.S. Navy off and on until 1964, is now a museum ship. In 1981, a new USS Kidd, the first of its eponymous class of warships, entered service and inherited the tradition (and permission) to hoist the Jolly Roger until it was given to Taiwan in 1998.
And so it was for the latest USS Kidd when it was commissioned in 2007. It not only flies the pirate flag when entering and leaving port, but when the vessel makes its way between the U.S. coasts and during multinational exercises, as well. The skull and crossbones can also be seen on the rear of the Kidd's five-inch guns, on its internal doors and probably tattooed on a fair number of its sailors.

A lot of Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are out there, named for a great number of the Navy's leaders and heroes. The USS Kidd (and the Kidds that come after it) will always be the only ship flying the Jolly Roger as part of its own unique piece of history.

U.S. Senate Unanimously Approves Congressman Hamadeh’s Effort to Preserve F-14 Tomcat Legacy


Washington, May 1, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed the companion bill to Congressman Abe Hamadeh’s Maverick Act of 2026. Congressman Hamadeh’s bill will preserve the last three F-14 Tomcats for public display and educational purposes.

The Maverick Act of 2026 creates a narrow exception to the post-retirement restrictions that have destroyed nearly all F-14s, ensuring that its legacy is preserved. The Maverick Act allows three of the world’s final Tomcats to be demilitarized and transferred for public display and education under strict national security safeguards. It does not restore combat capability or reopen foreign transfer.
“I want to thank Senator Sheehy and his colleagues for passing this legislation aimed at preserving for history one of the most iconic aircraft ever flown,” stated Congressman Hamadeh. “As a former U.S. Army officer, I know that many of the men and women I served with felt the same way. That is why I proudly introduced this legislation.”

“I am also grateful to the cosponsors of the bill in the House, who have already offered their enthusiastic support,” stated Congressman Hamadeh.

BACKGROUND:

In an amendment to the FY26 defense bill signed into law by President Trump, Congressman Hamadeh also secured five T-37 jet trainer aircraft from Tucson’s boneyard, saving them from final destruction. These jets trained aces, astronauts, and our first female aviators and now, the Arizona Aviation Historical Group will bring one back to its former glory, promoting historical preservation, STEM, aviation education, and recruitment.

The F-14, a carrier-based aircraft, entered the U.S. Navy inventory in 1972 and retired in September 1996.
Known for its AIM-54 Phoenix missile system and its portrayal in Top Gun, it saw extensive service in the Gulf War, the Balkans, and Iraq.

I saw a short clip of a B1B flying over the White House and lighting off its afterburners but haven't found a decent clip of it to share here. This is one from three years ago at a show and yup, pretty much that's it. I was at EAA Oshkosh in '88 and they had one. First it went by low and slow with it's wings extended then came back a bit later with them retracted going like **** off a shovel and IIRC it lit up the fun pipes then. It's literally visceral, you feel it in your guts.

 
These didn't show what made the 37 that Jim Watson used different. It was the specially developed duck bill choke. I just read his book and he said it created a 2' high by 12' wide dispersal pattern at about 25 yards with #4 shot that acted literally like a buzz saw blade.

How Navy SEAL Chief “Patches” Watson Customized the Ithaca 37 Shotgun​


The shotgun’s devastating effectiveness in close-range firefights made it legendary among SEAL operators in Vietnam.

In his book Point Man Navy SEAL Chief James “Patches” Watson, one of the godfathers of the SEAL community and a legend for his escapades and fighting spirit, recounts his experiences in Vietnam. The book is full of fascinating information about the exotic firearms used by SEALs in that war. And the gun that captured our attention the most was a custom Ithaca 37 shotgun that Patches referred to as “Sweetheart.”

Movies and video games often portray shotguns as throwing a wall of lead. In reality, however, even though, the shotgun’s buckshot spread gives you more room for error, a shotgun still has to be aimed. An inch miss with an M16 could mean a complete miss. An inch miss with a shotgun might mean four or five pellets still hitting the threat. Shotguns are also the easiest weapon to hit moving targets, and in gunfights, people move.

The dense jungles of Vietnam pushed fighting to a close-quarters environment where shotguns were highly effective, since with buckshot, a shotgun fires multiple projectiles per trigger pull making it easier to land effective shots. As a result, many shotguns were used in Vietnam, including the World War I Winchester M1897. The Navy and SEALs seemed to prefer the Ithaca 37.



What made the Ithaca 37 different​


The Ithaca 37 copied the older Remington 1917’s design but had several notable improvements making it easier to produce and more reliable. The Ithaca 37 series served in World War II in a trench configuration with a heatshield and bayonet. Some of these were still being made in Vietnam, but the standard model was the Featherlight Riot gun.

The Ithaca 37 was a fair bit lighter than its contemporaries, which is why it gained the “Featherlight” name, and weighed 6.3 pounds, according to Watson. The riot gun model featured a 20-inch barrel with a simple bead sight. It had a four-round magazine tube and wore a simple grey-looking parkerized finish.

In contrast to most shotguns, which had a loading port and ejection port, the Ithaca 37 loaded and ejected from the same port at the bottom of the receiver. This reduced entrances for dirt, debris, and gunk.



Chief Watson notes that another SEAL carried the full-auto Remington 7188 and that when it worked, it was an impressive and devastating weapon. However, he noted that the 7188 was finicky and fragile, and malfunctioned easily. On the other hand, he writes that he could dip the Ithaca into a muddy creek, then just wash it out and it would be fine.

After a tour in Vietnam with the Ithaca, Watson returned home and went to Frankfort Arsenal. There, he picked up two new shotguns – both were Ithaca 37s.

The folks at Frankfort Arsenal had solved a big problem with the original Ithaca shotguns and had extended the magazine tube to seven from four rounds: with one round in the chamber that gave Patches eight in total.

Mossberg Maverick 88

While the Mossberg 500 series utilizes a top tang safety, the Maverick 88 shotguns feature a trigger guard-mounted cross-bolt safety.

The end of the barrels wore odd muzzle devices that became known as “Duck Bill” chokes. These odd chokes were designed to spread shot horizontally. This new spread pattern promised to offer a more beneficial dispersion of shot in the jungle. The muzzle device was designed to be used with No.4 Buckshot which is the smallest-sized buckshot. Although the military issued shells held 27 pellets, Patches preferred the No. 4 load for the higher amount of pellets it distributed.

Later, Patches cut the stock down to the point where all that was left was a pistol grip. Shortening the stock made the weapon easier to carry and more maneuverable. He also attached a homemade single-point sling to the gun making it ready for instant use.

The lack of a stock made the weapon harder to shoot, but Patches was well trained. As he explains, he only carried his shotgun when he thought the fighting would be up close where the combination of the No. 4 buckshot and Duck Bill choke would allow him to hit anything. (He specifies that 20 yards would be considered long-range in these fights.)



He carried this version of the Ithaca for two tours in Vietnam, and it became his Sweetheart.

The Ithaca 37 series was extremely popular amongst SEALs in Vietnam, according to Patches, and It’s easy to see why.

The Wreck of the IJN Mogami

On May 8th, 2019 the R/V Petrel located the wreck of the Japanese heavy cruiser Mogami in 4,760 feet (1,450 meters) of water in the vicinity of the Surigao Strait.

Mogami
was the lead ship of her class of heavy (Class A) (originally light [Class B]) cruisers, laid down on October 27th, 1931. Under the terms of the London Naval Treaty, cruisers were limited to a maximum gun bore of 8'' and maximum normal displacement of 10,000 tons, but the total tonnage of heavy and light cruisers was also limited. With the Takao class under construction, the IJN was out of offical tonnage for heavy cruisers.
To get around this in the future, the IJN's design team, lead by Adm. Kikuo Fujimoto designed the class with provisions to have the 155mm triple mounts replaced with 203mm twin mounts.
As-built, Mogami displaced 8,500 tons standard, 13,760 tons full, and was armed with five triple 155 mm /60 caliber guns, two twin 127/40 89-shiki guns, two single 40mm /62 caliber HI 91-shiki AA guns, and four triple 610mm torpedo tubes with a set of reloads for each, giving a total of 24 torpedoes. She had an impressive top speed of 37 knots.

In an effort to save on weight, Mogami and Mikuma were constructed with electrically welded hulls and significant use of aluminum in the superstructure. These ships were plagued with issues, and underwent a significant rebuild shortly after they were launched due to the investigation prompted by the Tomozuru Incident.
The brand-new torpedo boat Tomozuru capsized in March 1934, with the loss of 100 crewmembers. During the investigation, it was determined that many Japanese warships were vastly overloaded and top-heavy, including the brand-new Mogami class. This incident caused major damage to Fujimoto's reputation, but he was recalled to his office with the recognition that he was given design requirements that cut ship safety and integrity far too much. However, he died the very next day, and the later events would result in many of his prodigies being dismissed as well. This would have significant consequences for the designs of later warships.
Compounding the issue of instability, the welded hulls were weak, with welds splitting when the main battery was fired, and during the 4th Fleet Incident of 1935, they developed major cracks in their hulls in a typhoon. The IJN did try and remedy these major shortcomings, with a major reconstruction of Mogami and Mikuma starting in 1936 and running to 1938.
1,120 tons were added to Mogami, 1,063 tons of which were taken up with hull reinforcement and additional bulges to improve stability. This increased the beam from 19m to 20.2m and resulted in the speed dropping to 35 knots. Other changes at this time were the removal of the 40mm guns, several stowed torpedoes which dropped the total to 18 weapons, and the addition of two more twin 127mm mounts, four twin 25mm mounts, and two 13mm MGs.
There were few changes until 1939, when Fujimoto's plan was put into effect. The triple 155mm guns were all removed, and twin 20 cm/50 3rd Year Type No. 2 mounts (Actual bore of 203.2mm) were put in their place. But despite the plans to do so, there were many issues. The 155mm turrets needed a larger diameter roller path, so when it was time to replace them, the 203mm guns were fitted to bigger turrets to actually fit the rollers properly. Another issue was that the 203mm guns were longer, which prevented the guns of Turret Two from being lowered past 12 degrees when pointed directly ahead.
During these operations, the catapults were replaced with more modern ones, and the number of torpedoes was restored to the full 24 as originally built.

In late 1941 into early 1942 Mogami operated with Cruiser Division Seven in the southwest Pacific, participating in the invasions of Malaya, Kuching (British Borneo), Sumatra, and Java. On February 28th, 1942 she was involved in the Battle of Sunda Strait, firing six Type 93 torpedoes at USS Houston and HMAS Perth. While the allied cruisers were sunk, the Japanese paid for their wild torpedo fire, with Mogami probably being responsible for the sinking of a Japanese minesweeper and transport, and serious damage to three other ships, including a hospital ship and the command ship of the IJA force that was landing that night.
The next major action for Mogami would not end nearly as well for the cruiser, since in June 1942 CruDiv7 was attached to the Operation MI force heading to Midway Atoll. At 2138 on June 4th, lookouts on the flagship of CruDiv7 (Kumano) spotted the surfaced US submarine USS Tambor (SS-198). The order is given for the line of cruisers to make a turn to port to evade any torpedoes that might have been launched.
Over the next few minutes, the four cruisers make turns of various tightness, with Suzuya nearly hitting Kumano. But five minutes after the order was given, the last two ships in the line, Mogami and Mikuma collided. The last moment maneuvers by Mogami helped mitigate the 28-knot impact between the 13,000 ton ships, but the damage was still severe.
Mogami's bow crumpled down to Turret One, forty feet of steel was crushed back and almost 90 degrees to port, and she was dead in the water. Mikuma suffered most of her damage above the waterline, near the bridge tower, though it was still a 20x6 meter gash with bent-in plating, along with a leaking tank of fuel oil.
Both Mogami and Mikuma were detached from CruDiv7 and sent them to the west at Mogami's best speed of 12 knots. Lt. Cdr. Saruwatari Masayushi, Mogami's damage control officer, did a fantastic job at improving his ship's chances. He led teams to shore up the bow watertight compartments and ordered the disposal of as much flammable material as possible, including all 24 of the Type 93 torpedoes.
At 0630 the next day an American PBY flying boat spotted the damaged cruisers, and they were subjected to several air attacks from Midway by Marine Dauntless and Vindicator bombers, and later by Army B-17s, with only light damage and few casualties.
June 6th, 1942 saw the American carriers turn their planes towards the battered CruDiv, now joined by a pair of destroyers. The first attack by dive bombers was at 0950 from USS Hornet (VB-8 and VS-8 with extras) scored near misses on Mikuma, but landed two hits on Mogami. One hit Turret Five directly, killing every man inside, the second passed through the aircraft deck and ended its travel by detonating in the torpedo room. Had she still been carrying her Type 93s, this could very well have been a fatal hit. Despite the fires and the loss of all three floatplanes, the fires were put out in about an hour.

Next came Enterprise's dive bombers, at 1245 and though the cruisers were now making 20 knots, Mogami took two more bomb hits, one to the aircraft deck and one ahead of the bridge, though these hits only caused moderate damage. Mikuma was not so lucky, and suffered several devastating hits that would ultimately doom her.
The last hit to Mogami stuck the aircraft deck again, the 1000 pound bomb killing nearly every man in the sickbay and starting a large fire. Saruwatari made another hard call and sealed off several hatches in the area to contain the fire, even though there were still men trapped inside.
Despite the loss of Mikuma and most of her crew, and 90 killed and 101 wounded on Mogami, the ship survived to fight another day.
Starting in September 1942, Mogami underwent her last major modification, with the addition of a large aircraft deck on the stern. Except for small details, this would be her final configuration.



The rebuild more than tripled Mogami's aircraft capacity from three to eleven, with the removal of Turrets Four and Five, the conversion of the magazines for those turrets into magazines and fuel tanks for the aircraft, and adding a sprawling arrangement of tracks to store and transport the aircraft.
Originally the aircraft were supposed to be the brand new Aichi E16A1 Zuiun (Allied reporting name 'Paul'), but since there weren't enough of these planes to go around, Mogami got three Mitsubishi F1M2 Type 0 and four Aichi E13A1 Type 0 planes at first ('Pete' and 'Jake' respectively).




Other changes involved the addition of ten triple 25mm AA guns, the removal of the twin 25mm guns, as well as the 13mm guns. She was also fitted with a 1-shiki 2-go/Type 21 air and surface search radar.
Mogami would see some action over the rest of 1943 into 1944, such as the explosion and sinking of Mutsu, some of the Allied raids on Rabaul, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and received another refit in June 1944 that added several single 25mm guns around the perimeter of the aircraft deck (single mounts denoted by 'X' on the drawing above.
On October 22nd, 1944 Mogami departed Brunei on what would be her last operation.

Mogami
met her end on October 25th, 1944 in the Battle of Surigao Strait. The southern thrust of the IJN's attempt to smash the American beachheads on the island of Leyte was split into two groups. In the van of the Southern Force (Force C) were two old battleships, Fuso and Yamashiro, the heavy cruiser Mogami, and four destroyers (Michishio, Asagumo, Yamagumo, and Shigure).
The Second Striking Force consisted of two heavy cruisers (Nachi and Ashigara), one light cruiser (Abukuma), and eleven destroyers. Overall command was given to Vice Admiral Shoji Nishimura, with Yamashiro as his flagship. The Second Striking Force was directly commanded by Vice Admiral Kiyohide Shima abord Nachi, they departed later than Force C and would transit the strait about 40 miles behind the van.
Arrayed against them was a force of six American battleships, most of which were battleships repaired from the damage they'd sustained at Pearl Harbor, three heavy cruisers, five light cruisers, twenty-nine destroyers, and thirty-nine PT boats under the overall command of Rear Admiral Jesse B. Oldendorf.
Over the course of October 24th, the Japanese force had come under air attack, with Mogami suffering minor damage from near misses and strafing. But the fiercest combat wouldn't be until well after the sun set.

Just after midnight (0018-0035 hours) Mogami came under torpedo attack from PT boats, none of which connected. At 0105 she was struck by a dud 6'' shell fired by a Fuso, which failed to identify her in the darkness, killing three men. Then she took station astern of Fuso.
The formation would be under sporadic torpedo attack from PT boats until 0300, when DesRons 24, 54 and 56 launched their own torpedoes. These attacks did serious damage, sinking the destroyer Yamagumo, crippling Michishio and Asagumo, and hitting Fuso and Yamashiro. These hits would doom Fuso before she ever came into range of the American battleships, and she would explode and sink around 0345.

At 0342 the USS Bache (DD-470) engaged Mogami with her main battery of 5'' guns, scoring several hits. Once in the strait Mogami turned to port and accelerated to 25 knots, in an effort to bring her torpedoes to bear on the enemy. At 0354 Hutchens and Daly joined Bache, scoring several more hits, setting fires, and disabling the rear radio room. These destroyers were misidentified as Japanese, which delayed Mogami's return fire.
Mogami continued southeast, making smoke and making ready to launch her torpedoes when she came under fire from two heavy cruisers. One 8'' shell hit and disabled the #3 turret, another that hit at 0359 set a fire near the starboard air intakes, which forced the evacuation of the Number Three engine room and the shut down of the outboard screw on the starboard side.
Shortly after 0400, the port side tubes fired four torpedoes towards the American battle line. Then a barrage of 8'' shells, probably from USS Portland, started to hit home. Two hit the compass bridge and air defense platform on the bridge tower, killing Mogami's CO (Captain Toma Ryo, posthumously promoted to Rear Admiral), his XO (Captain Hashimoto Uroku), and several other senior officers. Two more shells knock out Engine Rooms One and Four, leaving only Engine Room Two and the portside outboard screw operational.
LtCdr Arai Giichiro, Mogami's gunnery officer, took the conn and ordered the stricken cruiser to withdraw. She only managed 8 knots and was steered by hand and with the sole remaining engine.
At 0415, 11 miles southwest of Hibuson Island, lookouts spotted the heavy cruiser Nachi, flagship of Vice-Admiral Shima Kiyohide.
In the confusion of the battle and darkness, the crew on Nachi didn't realize that Mogami was still underway, and the two ships collided at around 0420. The impact tore a hole above the waterline on Mogami's starboard side, near the #1 turret. Nachi came away far worse, with one AA gun destroyed, and a 15-meter gash in her bow near the chain lockers. With the realization that the van of the Southern Force was all but annihilated, the surviving ships start to withdraw to the southwest.
At 0441, Mogami manages to get to 14 knots, but the fires reached unlaunched torpedoes and caused them to detonate. Less than five minutes later the last engine room was evacuated, though the turbine continued to run. At 0450 the badly damaged Asagumo joins Mogami, and Ashigara manages to avoid running into Mogami around 0500.
But the Americans weren't about to let some Japanese warships run without making an effort to pursue them. The heavy cruisers Louisville, Portland, and the light cruiser Denver caught up with Mogami around 0530. Despite at least ten additional hits amidships, LtCdr Arai managed to steer Mogami away from the American ships to escape.
From 0600 to 0630 Mogami, with the other surviving warships of the Southern Force managed to drive off several attacks by PT boats, who failed to score any hits on the ships.
VADM Kiyohide ordered Mogami, limited to 12 knots, and Akebono to head for Cagayan (on the island of Luzon, at the northern tip of the Philippine islands) or Coron (on the island of Coron, west of the main islands of the Philippines).
But it would not come to pass, starting at 0717 hours American aircraft started to make themselves known. The first attack was beaten off without damage, but at 0902 six Avengers and Five Wildcats from the USS Ommaney Bay (CVE-79) strike. The Avengers claim five hits, but actually only manage three hits with 500 pounds bombs. But these are enough.
The last turbine is stopped, and uncontrollable fires start from the forward aviation gas tanks. At 1047 the crew depart, and at 1256 Akebono fires a single Type 93 torpedo into Mogami's port side. The cruiser finally sinks by the bow at 1307, taking 191 sailors and one civilian worker down with her. 700 survivors, 125 of whom are wounded, are rescued by Akebono.


A map that shows the general location of Mogami's wreck, the strait is the north-south waterway north of Surigao City. Coron would be at least 400 miles away, and Cagayan would be at least a thousand miles away.

The Battle of Surigao Strait was a crushing victory for the American force, all of Force C except the destroyer Shigure were sunk by the 26th, and most of the ships in the Second Force were sunk by aircraft or submarines in the next few months of the Philippine Campaign.

The Wreck





Mogami is resting upright, but the damage that she sustained on October 25th, 1944 can be seen even on the sonar images.
As usual, the analysis will start from the bow and work to the stern. New additions and photos will be added to their relative position in the analysis.



A large section from the bow was folded back over the top of Turret #1. While there aren't photos of the starboard side, I suspect that this feature of the wreck had its origin in the damage Nachi inflicted when she rammed Mogami. After Mogami sank, the force of the water would be more than able to fold the bow over in this manner.



This photo shows the anchor chain going down into the chain pipe that leads to the chain lockers. The two cylinders on the lower right are part of an apparatus called a bitt. Bitts are used to secure mooring lines, but any rope that was wrapped around them has long since decayed.



This looks to be the bow combing, used to deflect spray from the rest of the gun mounts and other equipment on deck.



Turret Two looks to be mostly intact. The reason that the barrels on the wrecked warships are so often pointed up to their maximum elevation or beyond is because of the deterioration of the elevation systems, and the somewhat breech-heavy design of many guns results in the barrels pointing towards the surface.

The base of the bridge tower, this is on the level of the commander's quarters, looking from the port side. The cylinder supported by a strut on the top is the bottom of an observation post. The debris on the left side is a platform that once had a pair of twin 13 mm/76 Type 93 machine guns before they were removed during her conversion to a seaplane cruiser.
These guns were Hotchkiss derived, with a close mechanical lineage to the much-maligned 25mm cannon that was so often used by the IJN. Like every other nation, the Japanese determined that even large machine guns weren't suitable for air defense. Even so, they continued to produce these guns by the thousands until the very end of the war.



Slightly higher up the remains of a 1.5-meter navigational rangefinder can be seen on the upper right side of the frame. The observation post is right in the center. In the back is the armored pilothouse, which would be towards the left, and a radio room on the right side.

Another view that shows the interior of the platform. Aside from the compass, there were also 12 and 18 cm binoculars on this level for target spotting. This level is (5) on the diagram below, the rangefinder and observation posts shown above are (13) and (14) respectively.
As much as I would like to, I cannot provide a full breakdown of what every item on the diagram is, because the book that it's from is in Polish. Since I cannot read Polish, and the online translators that are available are poor at translating the more technical terms, the diagram will have to suffice.



Portland was probably firing armor-piercing shells at Mogami. The American Mark 19 8'' AP shell weighed 260 pounds and had an explosive filler of 3.64 pounds of Explosive D. Also known as 'Dunnite' (ammonium picrate), this explosive was used by the US Navy because of its resistance to shock detonation, which allowed AP shells to pass through an enemy ship's armor before the fuse detonated the explosives.
Those killed by the hits included Mogami's commanding officer Captain Toma Ryo, her Executive Officer Captain Hashimoto Uroku, the Navigator LCDR Nakano Nobuyuki, the Communications Officer LT Okubo Takeo, the lookout officer Li (first name and rank unknown), and the Radar, Damage Control, and Assistant Communications officers were also killed.




The 6-meter rangefinder for the main battery, this view is directed from the rear of the rangefinder and the rangefinder tower. This is a 94 Shiki rangefinder tower, which is a somewhat confusing designation.
To keep it simple, the number is the last two digits of the Imperial Calendar Year, which has its origin with the reign of Emperor Jimmu way back in 660 B.C. This particular method started to see use in 1927 A.D., which is the Imperial Year 2587, so a gun or other piece of equipment designed in 1927 would be designated '87 Shiki'.
Based on this, the 94 Shiki tower can be loosely read as 'Model 1934'. This is items (2) and (3) on the diagram of the tower above.

This is the splinter shield for one of Mogami's twin 40 caliber Type 89 12.7 cm Guns. It is possible that the chunks that are missing from the lower shield are from battle damage since Mogami did suffer a protracted bombardment from aircraft and the American cruisers.







This photograph of Mogmai's starboard side in 1943 shows the two twin 12.7cm mounts, as well as 25mm guns, and some of the large number of aircraft located on the stern.



The forward torpedo launcher on the port side. This is a triple mount, and Mogami had four of them in total. By 1944 she was fitted with reloads of all tubes, for a total of 24 torpedoes available to fire.

This is what Mogami's stern looked like in 1943. The monoplanes are Aichi E13A 'Jake' seaplanes, they first flew in 1939 and were a common scout airplane in the IJN for the entire war, with more than 1,400 being produced. Interestingly, some of them remained in service with the French from 1945 to 1947 during the First Indochina War.
The biplanes are Mitsubishi F1M 'Pete' seaplanes. These were the last biplane operated by the IJN, and nearly a thousand were built by 1944 when production stopped. They were versatile aircraft, being used as fighters, bombers, scouts, and towards the end of the war, as kamikaze aircraft.

Unfortunately, there probably won't be more photos or video documenting Mogami in the near future. As the ROV made the turn around the stern, there was an electrical fault that force the Petrel to reel it back in, and they had to move away from the wreck by the time they were able to get it repaired.

The RV Petrel team, sponsored by Paul G. Allen of Microsoft, has continued their work in finding and documenting the lost ships of the Second World War. Yesterday, 3-4-2018, they took video footage of the wreck of the USS Lexington , CV-2. There are just a few things of note shown in the video, but I felt that I couldn't leave this alone. 0:06: There were several 5'' AA guns located on the port stern quarter of Lexington . This is probably gun #10 or #12, since a fallen set of stairs can be seen in the background on the left side of the screen. This is a section of Lexington's general plans from 1941. The AA guns in question are the left two of the group of three on the top of the picture. I don't feel comfortable saying which gun this is, but it gives a general idea of where this gun is located. The Wreck of the Chokai

Chokai was the last of the four-strong Takao class of heavy cruisers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the late 1920s. Imperial Japanese designers worked for several years under the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty to make warships that were superior in quality to their American and British opponents, but the tonnage limitations imposed by the treaty made designs that would satisfy the General Staff almost impossible. When combined with the rapid pace of construction, several technical failings emerged during the trials of many of these ships, including the Takao class. Despite material changes, welding in several parts of the superstructure, and the heavy use of aluminum, the ships suffered from concerns about stability for their entire service lives. The Wreck of the Maya

On June 30th, 2019, the RV Petrel announced on Facebook that they'd located the wreck of a Japanese warship near the island of Palawan. This ship was the Maya , a Takao class heavy cruiser that had last been seen on October 23rd, 1944. The Wreck of the IJN Mogami

On May 8th, 2019 the R/V Petrel located the wreck of the Japanese heavy cruiser Mogami in 4,760 feet (1,450 meters) of water in the vicinity of the Surigao Strait.

Mogami
was the lead ship of her class of heavy (Class A) (originally light [Class B]) cruisers, laid down on October 27th, 1931. Under the terms of the London Naval Treaty, cruisers were limited to a maximum gun bore of 8'' and maximum normal displacement of 10,000 tons, but the total tonnage of heavy and light cruisers was also limited. With the Takao class under construction, the IJN was out of offical tonnage for heavy cruisers.
To get around this in the future, the IJN's design team, lead by Adm. Kikuo Fujimoto designed the class with provisions to have the 155mm triple mounts replaced with 203mm twin mounts.
As-built, Mogami displaced 8,500 tons standard, 13,760 tons full, and was armed with five triple 155 mm /60 caliber guns, two twin 127/40 89-shiki guns, two single 40mm /62 caliber HI 91-shiki AA guns, and four triple 610mm torpedo tubes with a set of reloads for each, giving a total of 24 torpedoes. She had an impressive top speed of 37 knots.

In an effort to save on weight, Mogami and Mikuma were constructed with electrically welded hulls and significant use of aluminum in the superstructure. These ships were plagued with issues, and underwent a significant rebuild shortly after they were launched due to the investigation prompted by the Tomozuru Incident.
The brand-new torpedo boat Tomozuru capsized in March 1934, with the loss of 100 crewmembers. During the investigation, it was determined that many Japanese warships were vastly overloaded and top-heavy, including the brand-new Mogami class. This incident caused major damage to Fujimoto's reputation, but he was recalled to his office with the recognition that he was given design requirements that cut ship safety and integrity far too much. However, he died the very next day, and the later events would result in many of his prodigies being dismissed as well. This would have significant consequences for the designs of later warships.
Compounding the issue of instability, the welded hulls were weak, with welds splitting when the main battery was fired, and during the 4th Fleet Incident of 1935, they developed major cracks in their hulls in a typhoon. The IJN did try and remedy these major shortcomings, with a major reconstruction of Mogami and Mikuma starting in 1936 and running to 1938.
1,120 tons were added to Mogami, 1,063 tons of which were taken up with hull reinforcement and additional bulges to improve stability. This increased the beam from 19m to 20.2m and resulted in the speed dropping to 35 knots. Other changes at this time were the removal of the 40mm guns, several stowed torpedoes which dropped the total to 18 weapons, and the addition of two more twin 127mm mounts, four twin 25mm mounts, and two 13mm MGs.
There were few changes until 1939, when Fujimoto's plan was put into effect. The triple 155mm guns were all removed, and twin 20 cm/50 3rd Year Type No. 2 mounts (Actual bore of 203.2mm) were put in their place. But despite the plans to do so, there were many issues. The 155mm turrets needed a larger diameter roller path, so when it was time to replace them, the 203mm guns were fitted to bigger turrets to actually fit the rollers properly. Another issue was that the 203mm guns were longer, which prevented the guns of Turret Two from being lowered past 12 degrees when pointed directly ahead.
During these operations, the catapults were replaced with more modern ones, and the number of torpedoes was restored to the full 24 as originally built.

In late 1941 into early 1942 Mogami operated with Cruiser Division Seven in the southwest Pacific, participating in the invasions of Malaya, Kuching (British Borneo), Sumatra, and Java. On February 28th, 1942 she was involved in the Battle of Sunda Strait, firing six Type 93 torpedoes at USS Houston and HMAS Perth. While the allied cruisers were sunk, the Japanese paid for their wild torpedo fire, with Mogami probably being responsible for the sinking of a Japanese minesweeper and transport, and serious damage to three other ships, including a hospital ship and the command ship of the IJA force that was landing that night.
The next major action for Mogami would not end nearly as well for the cruiser, since in June 1942 CruDiv7 was attached to the Operation MI force heading to Midway Atoll. At 2138 on June 4th, lookouts on the flagship of CruDiv7 (Kumano) spotted the surfaced US submarine USS Tambor (SS-198). The order is given for the line of cruisers to make a turn to port to evade any torpedoes that might have been launched.
Over the next few minutes, the four cruisers make turns of various tightness, with Suzuya nearly hitting Kumano. But five minutes after the order was given, the last two ships in the line, Mogami and Mikuma collided. The last moment maneuvers by Mogami helped mitigate the 28-knot impact between the 13,000 ton ships, but the damage was still severe.
Mogami's bow crumpled down to Turret One, forty feet of steel was crushed back and almost 90 degrees to port, and she was dead in the water. Mikuma suffered most of her damage above the waterline, near the bridge tower, though it was still a 20x6 meter gash with bent-in plating, along with a leaking tank of fuel oil.
Both Mogami and Mikuma were detached from CruDiv7 and sent them to the west at Mogami's best speed of 12 knots. Lt. Cdr. Saruwatari Masayushi, Mogami's damage control officer, did a fantastic job at improving his ship's chances. He led teams to shore up the bow watertight compartments and ordered the disposal of as much flammable material as possible, including all 24 of the Type 93 torpedoes.
At 0630 the next day an American PBY flying boat spotted the damaged cruisers, and they were subjected to several air attacks from Midway by Marine Dauntless and Vindicator bombers, and later by Army B-17s, with only light damage and few casualties.
June 6th, 1942 saw the American carriers turn their planes towards the battered CruDiv, now joined by a pair of destroyers. The first attack by dive bombers was at 0950 from USS Hornet (VB-8 and VS-8 with extras) scored near misses on Mikuma, but landed two hits on Mogami. One hit Turret Five directly, killing every man inside, the second passed through the aircraft deck and ended its travel by detonating in the torpedo room. Had she still been carrying her Type 93s, this could very well have been a fatal hit. Despite the fires and the loss of all three floatplanes, the fires were put out in about an hour.

Next came Enterprise's dive bombers, at 1245 and though the cruisers were now making 20 knots, Mogami took two more bomb hits, one to the aircraft deck and one ahead of the bridge, though these hits only caused moderate damage. Mikuma was not so lucky, and suffered several devastating hits that would ultimately doom her.
The last hit to Mogami stuck the aircraft deck again, the 1000 pound bomb killing nearly every man in the sickbay and starting a large fire. Saruwatari made another hard call and sealed off several hatches in the area to contain the fire, even though there were still men trapped inside.
Despite the loss of Mikuma and most of her crew, and 90 killed and 101 wounded on Mogami, the ship survived to fight another day.
Starting in September 1942, Mogami underwent her last major modification, with the addition of a large aircraft deck on the stern. Except for small details, this would be her final configuration.



The rebuild more than tripled Mogami's aircraft capacity from three to eleven, with the removal of Turrets Four and Five, the conversion of the magazines for those turrets into magazines and fuel tanks for the aircraft, and adding a sprawling arrangement of tracks to store and transport the aircraft.
Originally the aircraft were supposed to be the brand new Aichi E16A1 Zuiun (Allied reporting name 'Paul'), but since there weren't enough of these planes to go around, Mogami got three Mitsubishi F1M2 Type 0 and four Aichi E13A1 Type 0 planes at first ('Pete' and 'Jake' respectively).




Other changes involved the addition of ten triple 25mm AA guns, the removal of the twin 25mm guns, as well as the 13mm guns. She was also fitted with a 1-shiki 2-go/Type 21 air and surface search radar.
Mogami would see some action over the rest of 1943 into 1944, such as the explosion and sinking of Mutsu, some of the Allied raids on Rabaul, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and received another refit in June 1944 that added several single 25mm guns around the perimeter of the aircraft deck (single mounts denoted by 'X' on the drawing above.
On October 22nd, 1944 Mogami departed Brunei on what would be her last operation.

Mogami
met her end on October 25th, 1944 in the Battle of Surigao Strait. The southern thrust of the IJN's attempt to smash the American beachheads on the island of Leyte was split into two groups. In the van of the Southern Force (Force C) were two old battleships, Fuso and Yamashiro, the heavy cruiser Mogami, and four destroyers (Michishio, Asagumo, Yamagumo, and Shigure).
The Second Striking Force consisted of two heavy cruisers (Nachi and Ashigara), one light cruiser (Abukuma), and eleven destroyers. Overall command was given to Vice Admiral Shoji Nishimura, with Yamashiro as his flagship. The Second Striking Force was directly commanded by Vice Admiral Kiyohide Shima abord Nachi, they departed later than Force C and would transit the strait about 40 miles behind the van.
Arrayed against them was a force of six American battleships, most of which were battleships repaired from the damage they'd sustained at Pearl Harbor, three heavy cruisers, five light cruisers, twenty-nine destroyers, and thirty-nine PT boats under the overall command of Rear Admiral Jesse B. Oldendorf.
Over the course of October 24th, the Japanese force had come under air attack, with Mogami suffering minor damage from near misses and strafing. But the fiercest combat wouldn't be until well after the sun set.

Just after midnight (0018-0035 hours) Mogami came under torpedo attack from PT boats, none of which connected. At 0105 she was struck by a dud 6'' shell fired by a Fuso, which failed to identify her in the darkness, killing three men. Then she took station astern of Fuso.
The formation would be under sporadic torpedo attack from PT boats until 0300, when DesRons 24, 54 and 56 launched their own torpedoes. These attacks did serious damage, sinking the destroyer Yamagumo, crippling Michishio and Asagumo, and hitting Fuso and Yamashiro. These hits would doom Fuso before she ever came into range of the American battleships, and she would explode and sink around 0345.

At 0342 the USS Bache (DD-470) engaged Mogami with her main battery of 5'' guns, scoring several hits. Once in the strait Mogami turned to port and accelerated to 25 knots, in an effort to bring her torpedoes to bear on the enemy. At 0354 Hutchens and Daly joined Bache, scoring several more hits, setting fires, and disabling the rear radio room. These destroyers were misidentified as Japanese, which delayed Mogami's return fire.
Mogami continued southeast, making smoke and making ready to launch her torpedoes when she came under fire from two heavy cruisers. One 8'' shell hit and disabled the #3 turret, another that hit at 0359 set a fire near the starboard air intakes, which forced the evacuation of the Number Three engine room and the shut down of the outboard screw on the starboard side.
Shortly after 0400, the port side tubes fired four torpedoes towards the American battle line. Then a barrage of 8'' shells, probably from USS Portland, started to hit home. Two hit the compass bridge and air defense platform on the bridge tower, killing Mogami's CO (Captain Toma Ryo, posthumously promoted to Rear Admiral), his XO (Captain Hashimoto Uroku), and several other senior officers. Two more shells knock out Engine Rooms One and Four, leaving only Engine Room Two and the portside outboard screw operational.
LtCdr Arai Giichiro, Mogami's gunnery officer, took the conn and ordered the stricken cruiser to withdraw. She only managed 8 knots and was steered by hand and with the sole remaining engine.
At 0415, 11 miles southwest of Hibuson Island, lookouts spotted the heavy cruiser Nachi, flagship of Vice-Admiral Shima Kiyohide.
In the confusion of the battle and darkness, the crew on Nachi didn't realize that Mogami was still underway, and the two ships collided at around 0420. The impact tore a hole above the waterline on Mogami's starboard side, near the #1 turret. Nachi came away far worse, with one AA gun destroyed, and a 15-meter gash in her bow near the chain lockers. With the realization that the van of the Southern Force was all but annihilated, the surviving ships start to withdraw to the southwest.
At 0441, Mogami manages to get to 14 knots, but the fires reached unlaunched torpedoes and caused them to detonate. Less than five minutes later the last engine room was evacuated, though the turbine continued to run. At 0450 the badly damaged Asagumo joins Mogami, and Ashigara manages to avoid running into Mogami around 0500.
But the Americans weren't about to let some Japanese warships run without making an effort to pursue them. The heavy cruisers Louisville, Portland, and the light cruiser Denver caught up with Mogami around 0530. Despite at least ten additional hits amidships, LtCdr Arai managed to steer Mogami away from the American ships to escape.
From 0600 to 0630 Mogami, with the other surviving warships of the Southern Force managed to drive off several attacks by PT boats, who failed to score any hits on the ships.
VADM Kiyohide ordered Mogami, limited to 12 knots, and Akebono to head for Cagayan (on the island of Luzon, at the northern tip of the Philippine islands) or Coron (on the island of Coron, west of the main islands of the Philippines).
But it would not come to pass, starting at 0717 hours American aircraft started to make themselves known. The first attack was beaten off without damage, but at 0902 six Avengers and Five Wildcats from the USS Ommaney Bay (CVE-79) strike. The Avengers claim five hits, but actually only manage three hits with 500 pounds bombs. But these are enough.
The last turbine is stopped, and uncontrollable fires start from the forward aviation gas tanks. At 1047 the crew depart, and at 1256 Akebono fires a single Type 93 torpedo into Mogami's port side. The cruiser finally sinks by the bow at 1307, taking 191 sailors and one civilian worker down with her. 700 survivors, 125 of whom are wounded, are rescued by Akebono.


A map that shows the general location of Mogami's wreck, the strait is the north-south waterway north of Surigao City. Coron would be at least 400 miles away, and Cagayan would be at least a thousand miles away.

The Battle of Surigao Strait was a crushing victory for the American force, all of Force C except the destroyer Shigure were sunk by the 26th, and most of the ships in the Second Force were sunk by aircraft or submarines in the next few months of the Philippine Campaign.

A large section from the bow was folded back over the top of Turret #1. While there aren't photos of the starboard side, I suspect that this feature of the wreck had its origin in the damage Nachi inflicted when she rammed Mogami. After Mogami sank, the force of the water would be more than able to fold the bow over in this manner.



This photo shows the anchor chain going down into the chain pipe that leads to the chain lockers. The two cylinders on the lower right are part of an apparatus called a bitt. Bitts are used to secure mooring lines, but any rope that was wrapped around them has long since decayed.



This looks to be the bow combing, used to deflect spray from the rest of the gun mounts and other equipment on deck.



Turret Two looks to be mostly intact. The reason that the barrels on the wrecked warships are so often pointed up to their maximum elevation or beyond is because of the deterioration of the elevation systems, and the somewhat breech-heavy design of many guns results in the barrels pointing towards the surface.



Turret Three, which was knocked out in the first few shots from the American cruiser force. Unfortunately, there are no released images that show the damage that was done.



The base of the bridge tower, this is on the level of the commander's quarters, looking from the port side. The cylinder supported by a strut on the top is the bottom of an observation post. The debris on the left side is a platform that once had a pair of twin 13 mm/76 Type 93 machine guns before they were removed during her conversion to a seaplane cruiser.
These guns were Hotchkiss derived, with a close mechanical lineage to the much-maligned 25mm cannon that was so often used by the IJN. Like every other nation, the Japanese determined that even large machine guns weren't suitable for air defense. Even so, they continued to produce these guns by the thousands until the very end of the war.



Slightly higher up the remains of a 1.5-meter navigational rangefinder can be seen on the upper right side of the frame. The observation post is right in the center. In the back is the armored pilothouse, which would be towards the left, and a radio room on the right side.

Another view that shows the interior of the platform. Aside from the compass, there were also 12 and 18 cm binoculars on this level for target spotting. This level is (5) on the diagram below, the rangefinder and observation posts shown above are (13) and (14) respectively.
As much as I would like to, I cannot provide a full breakdown of what every item on the diagram is, because the book that it's from is in Polish. Since I cannot read Polish, and the online translators that are available are poor at translating the more technical terms, the diagram will have to suffice.



Portland was probably firing armor-piercing shells at Mogami. The American Mark 19 8'' AP shell weighed 260 pounds and had an explosive filler of 3.64 pounds of Explosive D. Also known as 'Dunnite' (ammonium picrate), this explosive was used by the US Navy because of its resistance to shock detonation, which allowed AP shells to pass through an enemy ship's armor before the fuse detonated the explosives.
Those killed by the hits included Mogami's commanding officer Captain Toma Ryo, her Executive Officer Captain Hashimoto Uroku, the Navigator LCDR Nakano Nobuyuki, the Communications Officer LT Okubo Takeo, the lookout officer Li (first name and rank unknown), and the Radar, Damage Control, and Assistant Communications officers were also killed.




The 6-meter rangefinder for the main battery, this view is directed from the rear of the rangefinder and the rangefinder tower. This is a 94 Shiki rangefinder tower, which is a somewhat confusing designation.
To keep it simple, the number is the last two digits of the Imperial Calendar Year, which has its origin with the reign of Emperor Jimmu way back in 660 B.C. This particular method started to see use in 1927 A.D., which is the Imperial Year 2587, so a gun or other piece of equipment designed in 1927 would be designated '87 Shiki'.
Based on this, the 94 Shiki tower can be loosely read as 'Model 1934'. This is items (2) and (3) on the diagram of the tower above.



The 95 Shiki (Type 95, Model 1935) fire control tower. This is located atop the 94 Shiki tower and is marked as (1) on the diagram above.



This is the splinter shield for one of Mogami's twin 40 caliber Type 89 12.7 cm Guns. It is possible that the chunks that are missing from the lower shield are from battle damage since Mogami did suffer a protracted bombardment from aircraft and the American cruisers.







This photograph of Mogmai's starboard side in 1943 shows the two twin 12.7cm mounts, as well as 25mm guns, and some of the large number of aircraft located on the stern.



The forward torpedo launcher on the port side. This is a triple mount, and Mogami had four of them in total. By 1944 she was fitted with reloads of all tubes, for a total of 24 torpedoes available to fire.

This is what Mogami's stern looked like in 1943. The monoplanes are Aichi E13A 'Jake' seaplanes, they first flew in 1939 and were a common scout airplane in the IJN for the entire war, with more than 1,400 being produced. Interestingly, some of them remained in service with the French from 1945 to 1947 during the First Indochina War.
The biplanes are Mitsubishi F1M 'Pete' seaplanes. These were the last biplane operated by the IJN, and nearly a thousand were built by 1944 when production stopped. They were versatile aircraft, being used as fighters, bombers, scouts, and towards the end of the war, as kamikaze aircraft.





The rear port side torpedo tubes. Since the port side torpedo tubes aren't demolished, it seems probable that the fires and torpedoes that exploded were more on the starboard side of the ship.





A single 25mm cannon, one of the single mounts added during her last refit. This photo also shows how the aircraft deck has caved in. Large portions of it were made of wood, which has long since rotted away.



The port side rudder, with some of the loose debris that has fallen away from the stern. The very end of Mogami is in bad shape, possibly from being crushed under the pressure of the ocean before the interior could fully flood.

Unfortunately, there probably won't be more photos or video documenting Mogami in the near future. As the ROV made the turn around the stern, there was an electrical fault that force the Petrel to reel it back in, and they had to move away from the wreck by the time they were able to get it repaired.

The RV Petrel team, sponsored by Paul G. Allen of Microsoft, has continued their work in finding and documenting the lost ships of the Second World War. Yesterday, 3-4-2018, they took video footage of the wreck of the USS Lexington , CV-2. There are just a few things of note shown in the video, but I felt that I couldn't leave this alone. 0:06: There were several 5'' AA guns located on the port stern quarter of Lexington . This is probably gun #10 or #12, since a fallen set of stairs can be seen in the background on the left side of the screen. This is a section of Lexington's general plans from 1941. The AA guns in question are the left two of the group of three on the top of the picture. I don't feel comfortable saying which gun this is, but it gives a general idea of where this gun is located. The Wreck of the Chokai

Chokai was the last of the four-strong Takao class of heavy cruisers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the late 1920s. Imperial Japanese designers worked for several years under the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty to make warships that were superior in quality to their American and British opponents, but the tonnage limitations imposed by the treaty made designs that would satisfy the General Staff almost impossible. When combined with the rapid pace of construction, several technical failings emerged during the trials of many of these ships, including the Takao class. Despite material changes, welding in several parts of the superstructure, and the heavy use of aluminum, the ships suffered from concerns about stability for their entire service lives. The Wreck of the Maya

On June 30th, 2019, the RV Petrel announced on Facebook that they'd located the wreck of a Japanese warship near the island of Palawan. This ship was the Maya , a Takao class heavy cruiser that had last been seen on October 23rd, 1944. Posted on 7/2/2019 Revised with information from posted video on 7/6/2019 Historical Background At 0557 hours on October 23rd, 1944, Maya was struck by four torpedoes from the USS Dace (SS-247), a Gato class submarine, from a range of 1,800 yards. The first torpedo struck the bow, in the area of the forward chain locker. The second struck near Turret I, the third hit the Number 7 boiler room, and the last stuck the aft engine room. That was thirty seconds of scrape & paste ! I saw the sonar image on X and googled it and found that article. BTW - in any of my posts I usually make the title bold and blue and it's a link to wherever I got it. Occasionally the site won't let me change the color for whatever reason.

The Pacific theater in WW2 is a particular interest of mine and I know the story of the Mogami class heavy cruisers. It and it's sister ship Mikuma participated in Midway and it didn't go well for them. These famous images are of Mikuma before it sank are from a low slow flyby from a US reconnaissance plane.

Mogami collided with her sister and sheared her bow off and had to be taken under tow. She survived only due to the presence of mind of a damage control officer who jettisoned the oxygen fueled torpedoes she carried before they blew the ship to pieces. Mogami survived and was eventually repaired. The Battle of Suriago Strait is another better-than-fiction event and Mogami bought it attempting to retire from it and that sonar image is of her grave.
