Western North Carolina was hammered by the hurricane Helene, many roads are closed or under water...Half of highway 40 is in the river, its shut down to and from Asheville indefinitely until major repairs can be performed...Many cell phone towers are down, state roads in the mountains are washed out...My brother and his family live in Cherokee County in the mountains and stuck there for a while...

New York State Taking Drastic Action Due To Hurricane Helene​

As of 6 a.m. on Friday, at least three people are dead as Hurricane Helene slams the southeast.

One person was killed in Tampa after a highway sign fell onto their vehicle. Another two people are dead in Wheeler County, Georgia, after a possible tornado hit a mobile home, The storm packed winds of around 140 miles per hour when it landed in Florida.

On Thursday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that she has deployed a team of 16 swift water rescue personnel, two canines and emergency response equipment to North Carolina.

“New Yorkers lead by example and help our neighbors in times of despair,” Hochul stated. “Our expert swift water rescue team and the equipment they will bring with them will help save lives and protect against the potential destruction of property from Hurricane Helene. I thank these brave New Yorkers for answering the call and look forward to their safe return.”

How New York Team Will Help In North Carolina​

The 16-member water rescue team comprises members from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the Department of Environmental Conservation and State Police.

This team can conduct search and water rescues for people and animals, provide emergency medical care and support helicopter rescue operations.

"They are trained to operate in areas with compromised access to roadways, utilities, transportation and medical facilities, and with limited availability of shelter, food and water. Equipment sent to North Carolina with the team includes Zodiac boats and motors with trailers, two high-water rescue vehicles and drones," Hochul's office stated.

The storm isn't expected to impact New York State much. Though residents, including in the Hudson Valley may see some rain this weekend.

Wrong, at least 55 people are dead and who knows how many are missing or maybe dead since many towns cannot be fully accessed yet...

My brother is stuck in the mountains in Cherokee County, flood waters have washed out all the roads to get in or out...Many cell phone towers were also lost in the region making phone contact spotty...He has supplies and fuel stocked and helping others in that area...

The Hudson Valley Post is written on a high school newspaper level - I think one of the local wacky DJs does most of it.

I would not be surprised to see Connecticut deploy specialized teams as well.

RALEIGH, NC — With civilians working hard to rescue their neighbors along the path of devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene and FEMA revealing a lack of available money, the state of North Carolina asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for $100 Billion in U.S. funding.

Though President Biden approved North Carolina's request for federal disaster relief, uncertainty about the timetable for receiving funds amid various obstacles and bureaucratic red tape, the state's officials decided to go directly to the man with more U.S. taxpayer dollars than anyone else.

"He's the man with the money," said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. "I have a lot of faith in the Biden administration to provide us with help, but we simply can't afford to wait around while the federal government drags its feet. If we want the level of U.S. funding we need to help with relief efforts, we need to go where all the money is. I knew I had to get Zelensky on the phone right away."

A source within the Ukrainian government disclosed that it may be difficult to come up with the amount of funding North Carolina needs. "We would be happy to help," the source said. "We just need to figure out where all the money went. There's been so much of it over the last few years that it's hard to keep track of it. North Carolina can be sure that we will get back to them as soon as we can."
At publishing time, North Carolina had sent an urgent plea to the Taliban asking if it had any spare U.S. military helicopters it could have to help rescue hurricane victims.

Yeah are having some colder nights and cooler days, tonight forecast 40 degrees and a high of 68, perhaps more normal for mid-October than we're used to...

Weeks and weeks of picture perfect weather is at an end, it's snowing. We got an inch or two of wet heavy stuff that looks like it'll just melt and make a nuisance.

I'm glad I don't have an old car project out in the driveway right now.
