Isaias kicked the snot out of the Hudson Valley. 60K users out of 300K total without power. Me included.
Trees & lines & poles down everywhere. Back yard looks like a huge tossed salad.

Got the generator fired up. Pulled out Mr.Coffee stored just for this purpose. Got hot water, TV, internet, phones. A couple of small fans. At least the weather broke and we're not supposed to get the 90+ boiling we have been getting.

Later I'll have to go find a gas station with power and get an additional 10 gallons. Got plenty now, can always use more. Could always siphon it out of the 'vette if necessary.

I wonder how long this could go on. Power company is talking days ......

Damn, it just grazed my area, we had a worse storm a couple days before that tropical storm came through...Hope you get power restored soon, I need to buy a generator for another back up, but that's the problem if one doesn't have fuel stored for it, then you have to find a fueling station that has grid power to pump the fuel...Guess if necessary you could take a longer road trip and get fuel if days go by without electrical power restored...

I got home about 2 and the power had just come back on. Very unusual to be out at all much less 12 hours.

Spent all morning talking about generators, cords, plugs, panels ad nauseum. What I would say is if you wait until there's an emergency to go looking you're screwed. I don't want to hear about or talk about suicide plugs. You want to do that go ahead just leave me out of it. My last name isn't Kevorkian. If you don't know what a neutral is you should, at least if you want to stick your fingers in the wires.

The cord & plug route has been the way to go for me as this happens infrequently, but it is a p.i.t.a. In a couple of weeks when the shelves are restocked I think I have my answer. Burying UF wire in this area means the trench has to be minimum 40" deep. It's over 60' long. Ungood. I can only get a 250' roll of 10/3 UF and that's $258.

But in conduit it only has to be 18" deep.

A 100' roll of #10 AWG THHN stranded is about $30 so I need 4 rolls; black, red, white, green. 70' of plastic pipe and connectors won't even cost $25. Have to check the volume fill for individual conductors but it'll be 3/4" or 1" pipe. I can get that into my garage and then run Romex or MCLite 10/3 over to my panel. I might leave it near the panel in a junction box and come up with a L14-30 arrangement of socket cap + plug + 10/4 SJOOW cord to a double pole breaker. I'd still prefer not to leave anything permanently connected. I think if I do all that the cost would be about the same as just buying the UF cable itself, and that includes the cost of a mechanical generator lockout.

I have forgotten more about this stuff than most people I encounter have ever known. You gotta dig the lingo, man. I met so many nitwits today with, shall we say, creative theories on the topic.

Brutal hailstorm hits Critérium du Dauphiné cyclists and spectators in France

hailstorm-Criterium-du-Dauphine-1024x692.jpg

The finish of stage 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné was battered by a brutal hailstorm on Thursday afternoon, catching out a chunk of the peloton as they rode to the finish atop the Col de Porte and the crowds along the road.

Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) had long since taken the stage victory and overall race lead, but even the Slovenian was affected by the storm, his wife and young child forced to seek shelter in the car of Cyclingnews reporter Peter Cossins.

Meanwhile, the podium ceremony was cut short after the inflatable roof collapsed just as Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) was receiving the white jersey for best young rider.

Other riders caught up in the storm while they were still riding included Tony Martin (Jumbo-Visma), who sought shelter under a fan’s rubber raft, Luis León Sánchez (Astana), and Jérôme Cousin (Total Direct Énergie), who finished 14 minutes after the time limit haven taken shelter further down the climb.

A video taken by Groupama-FDJ directeur sportif shows a large group of riders making their way up the climb in the heavy hail. The video shows 22 riders, including Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) passing through before Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) passes, almost coming to a stop before heading off again.
