Hell, it’s getting dark around 4pm here in PA.

Geez, that makes the day much shorter, I guess this will continue until the winter solstice passes, then the days will get longer again...

Part of the reason it has been so dark around 4pm is that it has been overcast in this part of the state for the past week or so. I had to turn on the lamps at 3pm one day because we had a big rainstorm. My arthritic bones were hurting that day!

I hate it it when a basic software standard is changed, with no notice or trail to find out what the new standard is.

I have a 2017 Canon Printer-Scanner which I rarely use anymore, but I needed to connect it to my new laptop. Configuring the printer function was a little tricky, but not bad. Today I needed to use the scanner function, but none of the software I downloaded recognized it. I called Canon support, but they rebuffed me as I lacked the appropriate support subscription, or whatever.

After some sleuthing, I learned that what I needed was the IJ Scan Utility. Only it's not available for download anywhere, not even on Canon's site. Eventually, I learned that that it had been automatically downloaded with the standard drivers for the printer, and found out where to locate it. Well, I found the IJ Scan folder, but there is no EXE file in it!

Out of desperation, I went to the Microsoft App Store to find out if it could possibly be there. And that's when I learned that Windows now has a universal app to be used with scanners! I installed it, and presto, the scanner worked fine.

Here's the thing. Google said nothing about this app. Canon's support page said nothing about it. And even the inbuilt Windows Troubleshooting Routine is ignorant of its existence or necessity.

WTF!

The only semi-good thing about my adventure is that it stimulated memories of the old, more complicated and involved procedures that were required for setting up devices and configuring software.

Also, isn't it something that there would be problems setting up a printer-scanner from 2017? I guess that was a helluva long time ago! :what:

I hate it when everyone is optimistic that 2021 is going to be a better year than 2020 was and in the start of January 2021 you can plainly see that it just isn't going to happen.

... you accidentally hit 'download' on a 500+ episode podcast in iTunes and no matter how much pausing and canceling I hit it has a single minded Terminator-like obsession to download all of them slooooooowly. And when it's done, I just delete them :finger:

... when someone is totally dependent upon GPS for the simplest navigation; 5 minutes from home and you're lost without a cell signal. Just had to meet someone who is too busy looking at her phone to look out the windshield. Never seen a better candidate for a self driving car.

I can't get lost. Dialed in baby, know where I'm at.

Maybe if somebody actually removes me from the Earth it would take some recalculating ......

I can't stand pumping gas anymore at Sheetz nor at BP, both of them play these loud fraking commercials right on the gas pump while I'm filling up...Seriously the commercials they play are loud and extremely annoying, we can't even get any peace pumping gas anymore...So-called modern life, so many conveniences but they come with a lot of bs tied to them...

We get the same thing at the Speedway convenience stores and pump stations. I try not to go there unless the gas price is considerably cheaper. If it isn’t voice commercials at the pump, the area is inundated with billboard type ads. Luckily we have a few grocery stores where you can accumulate points and apply them to lower gas prices.

There's grocers here like Harris Teeter that have points accumulation programs which give discounts for gasoline, I haven't utilized them before because those stores are further say from my house than other places...The Harris Teeter grocer closest to me have their own gas pumps too, in front of their store, but to go there is about a 25-30 minute drive...I shop at that grocer sometimes, they carry items I can't find at other places, but I don't go there often...

Went to a drug store drive thru last night and picked up a big pile of stuff.

I am not making this up. Sat there and watched young man with the dull look of a barnyard animal pack a large paper bag full of the order and then turn to the drive thru drawer where his Mark 1 Organic Computer - that insanely complex and beautiful organ - slowly added up the fact that it couldn't possibly fit. That took a little shoving and more shoving but noooooo ... that wasn't it.

So he stood there clearly impaled upon the horns of a dilemma.

I had enough and actually had to say to him " put a little in at a time " at which time he brightened and proceeded to do it with relish.

I .... had .... to .... tell.... him .... to ....put....a....little...in...at...a....time.................................................................

Maybe we should send him off for one of those free college educations I hear talk about.

You allow your 13 year old son to go to a friend's house for the 1st time in months and he returns smelling of booze and pot. He then gets sick..
Well he punished himself...

So was it the kids that were into that or was it residue from the parents toking on his clothing and hair ? Sounds from your review on it the kids were dabbling in illicit substances , well at their age it is anyways. Smacked bottoms maybe in order ?
