Ohio will give 5 people $1 million each in COVID-19 vaccine lottery

Five vaccinated Ohioans will win $1 million each through a new lottery announced Wednesday, in one of the largest financial incentives announced by a state to combat declining demand for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Starting May 26, the state will award $1 million each week to an adult who has received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Gov. Mike DeWine said. There will be five total drawings.

"I know that some may say, 'DeWine, you’re crazy! This million-dollar drawing idea of yours is a waste of money,'" the governor said during an address Wednesday. "But truly, the real waste at this point in the pandemic -- when the vaccine is readily available to anyone who wants it -- is a life lost to COVID-19."

America’s Air Quality Worsens, Ending Years of Gains, Study Says
New data reveals that damaging air pollution has increased nationally since 2016, reversing a decades-long trend toward cleaner air.

U.S. air pollution is worsening after improving for years

The researchers say three factors could explain the increase in air pollution: stronger economic growth in recent years, an increase in wildfires and weakened federal "clean air" rules.

Bill Maher has tested positive for COVID-19, forcing HBO to scrap Friday’s scheduled taping of this week’s episode.

In a statement, HBO said Maher is “fully vaccinated” and “feels fine.” Friday’s guests were to have included astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and “Hardcore History” podcast host Dan Carlin.

“Bill tested positive during weekly staff PCR testing for COVID. He is fully vaccinated and as a result is asymptomatic and feels fine,” HBO said. ” ‘Real Time’ production has taken every precaution following COVID CDC guidelines. No other staff or crew members have tested positive at this time. The show will be rescheduled at a later date.”

My perspective is different and maybe because I was raised by germaphobes.

Living in a sterile environment weakens the immune system, we need interaction with germs and bacteria around us, it makes for a healthier individual within the realms of common sense...Drinking creek water is not a good idea of course lol...

COVID news live - latest updates: Warning early action key to tackling Indian variant and avoid 'damaging' 4th lockdown - as Wales delays relaxation of rules

Indian variant 'clearly out-competing' Kent variant and could delay June lifting of lockdown, expert warns

An expert has said that the variant which first emerged in India is “clearly out-competing” the Kent strain and that it could see the June lifting of lockdown delayed.

Paul Hunter, professor in medicine at the University of East Anglia, said the Indian variant was spreading faster than the Kent variant in a number of areas around the UK.

"Indeed it's now in most regions of the UK, with the possible exception of Yorkshire and Humber in the North East, which seem to have very few cases so far," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

He said the "big question is how many of people who are getting the Indian variant will end up requiring hospitalisation" and that this could delay life going back to normal on 21 June.

He said: "I think the step four is in doubt in June now, but we really need to see what impact it has on severe disease before we can really be certain…

"If the epidemic continues to increase, if the Indian variant of the epidemic continues to increase at the same rate as it has over recent weeks, we're going to have a huge number of cases by June."

Asked about what is known about the Indian variant's resistance to vaccines, he said: "It seems to be a little bit more resistant from the early indications, from what people are saying who are doing this sort of work.

"Not as resistant as the South African variant, but a little bit more resistant than the Kent variant."

Where is the Indian COVID variant spreading?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has admitted he is "anxious" about the variant which first emerged in India amid a rapid rise in UK cases.

Calls are being made for vaccines for over 16s in effected areas to help stem cases which have number 1,313 - up from the 520 recorded last week.

The cases are not evenly spread and are focused in several areas where officials are especially concerned.

As we mentioned earlier, Bolton is a particular hotspot and surge testing is underway there.

Sky News has looked at the data to map where cases are spreading below.

I've been hearing about things like this anecdotally. Wonder how prevalent. I guess it must be doing something if he's not sick, I guess he could still carry it. Stories like this make my head hurt and do not motivate me to get the shot. Haven't had any particularly strong objection to doing do but also haven't been too worried about it either. Already had the damned virus, not looking forward to a possible reaction to the shot(s) that may or may not need a booster and may or may not be entirely effective. I'm sure I'll get whacked with 'the science' lecture but subjectively that's how it looks to me.

I thought the UK lockdown was already lifted because of the percentage of those vaccinated...
COVID-19 Response - Spring 2021 (Summary)

It would be fair to say that we are in a partial (and gradually lifting) lockdown. Restrictions began to be eased on the 8th of March, and every few weeks they lift a few more. The last lot of restrictions are due to be lifted on the 21st of June (in England, the other nations of the UK make their own decisions, although they could align on the same date, I have not checked their timetables).

My daughter was fully vaccinated and 3 weeks after her second Pfizer shot she got very sick with some kind of virus. She was test both the quick test and the real test and found to be negative. A week later she feels better but still has a cough. Just like the flu, just because you get a respiratory virus does not mean it is the flu or covid19.

If Bill Mahr is not feeling ill then he probably does have the antibodies from the vaccine to keep him healthy.

Texas reports zero COVID deaths 2 months after Biden slammed 'Neanderthal thinking'

Texas reported zero deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday, just two months after Gov. Greg Abbott drew heat from the White House for rolling back business restrictions and lifting the state's mask mandate.

It marked the first time the Lone Star State reported no coronavirus deaths in about 14 months, according to state health data. Abbott said the case numbers reported on Sunday – 388 – were the lowest in more than 13 months, while the number of hospitalizations was the lowest in 11 months.

President Biden skewered Texas, as well as Mississippi, at the beginning of March for relaxing lockdown measures, accusing state officials of "Neanderthal thinking." At the time, Abbott had announced that businesses would be allowed to operate at full capacity – even though some health experts cautioned at the time that dropping preventative measures could lead to a spike in cases.

"I think it's a big mistake," Biden told reporters, following the announcement from Texas. "Look, I hope everybody's realized by now, these masks make a difference. We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease because of the way in which we're able to get vaccines in people's arms."

Since then, however, caseloads nationwide have dropped as more Americans are vaccinated.

Hmmm. What about Arizona? I don't think they shut down for more than 3 weeks. I know last summer their cases and deaths were high and they were one of the 3 worst states in the union for deaths.

To be fair, the above Texas numbers were for yesterday, a Sunday, when reporting numbers are typically lower anyway, but it's still good news though...

Yes, I guess I was wondering why Texas got called out and Arizona didn't. On the 12th Arizona had 469 new cases and 2 new deaths.

The Indian variant is proliferating fast in the UK. A raft of restrictions were lifted on Monday, meaning that people in England may now congregate indoors with members of other households for the first time this year, as well as dine inside restaurants and drink inside pubs.

PM Johnson's decision to delay adding India to the 'red list' of countries as a ploy to gain the favour of the Indian government while conducting trade talks is coming back to bite us (neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh were added while they had lower rates of transmission than India).

He had been claiming that nothing would delay the full re-opening of society on the 21st of June, but now it is a 'maybe', most likely leading to a 'yes', in delaying the lifting of restrictions. Reports are also that we may have to return the tiered system of local restrictions that was in place until December of last year, before the third national lockdown was implemented.

I've read reports that say the Indian variant is more contagious than the UK variant but it isn't any more deadly, but then another report said there's still a possibility it's more deadly, there's not enough data yet to confirm either way...Most reports I've read have stayed fairly optimistic about the effectiveness of the vaccines against the Indian variant, also without and confirmation either way...

AstraZeneca vaccine is 90 percent effective, new real-world data suggests

Two doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine are between 85 and 90 percent effective, the first analysis of real-world data suggests.

Public Health England’s study underscores the “incredible impact” of Britain’s vaccine rollout, ministers said, and shows the jab produced with Oxford University offers high protection from symptomatic Covid-19.

It comes as another milestone is passed in Britain’s wider vaccine rollout, with more than 37 million Britons now having had a first dose, and 21.2 million second shots administered.

As countries scale back or ditch the use of the vaccine altogether over concerns at extremely rare side effects, a panel of leading experts, including the deputy chair of the UK’s Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), has stressed that "we mustn't bash" the AstraZeneca jab because it is an “incredibly good” vaccine.

PHE’s latest surveillance report estimates that vaccines have prevented 13,000 Covid-linked deaths among those aged 60 and above in England alone, and stopped 39,100 hospitalisations in those aged 65 years and over.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his chief medics have expressed increasing optimism that the Indian variant will not scupper the June 21 “freedom day” when all restrictions are due to be lifted, as vaccines are working against all strains.
