Artist sells absolutely nothing for $18,300

An 'invisible sculpture' consisting of absolutely nothing whatsoever has sold for a ridiculous price at auction. Modern art can sometimes be a contentious subject, with everything from piles of rubbish to mundane objects selling for whopping great sums simply because such pieces have been defined as 'art'.

Sardinia-born artist Salvatore Garau however has now taken things one step further - perhaps as far as it is possible to go - by presenting and selling an 'invisible sculpture' at auction.

Entitled "I Am", the piece, which fills an area of totally empty space measuring 150 x 150cm, is literally nothing at all, with the only physical component being the owner's certificate of authenticity.

And the price for this piece of absolutely nothing whatsoever ? $18,300.

In a world where a banana taped to a wall can sell for $120,000, it's not entirely surprising.

"The successful outcome of the auction testifies to an irrefutable fact: the void is nothing but a space full of energy, and even if we empty it and nothing remains, according to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle that nothingness has a weight," said Garau.

"It therefore has energy that condenses and transforms itself into particles, in short, in us!"

At least the new owner of the piece won't have to worry about anyone stealing it...

Although I scoff at such pseudo-art, I say good for him that he could get a rich nitwit to shell out the dough.

Man punches Albuquerque mayoral candidate after taunting him with flying dildo

Man punches Albuquerque mayoral candidate after taunting him with flying dildo

Bernalillo County Sheriff and Albuquerque, New Mexico mayoral candidate Manny Gonzales was attacked at a campaign event Tuesday.

A mayoral hopeful in Albuquerque was punched at a campaign event by a man who was also accused of flying a drone adorned with a dildo around the candidate while he was on stage.

It’s the second time the “Dongcopter” — complete with its own Twitter account — has harassed a New Mexico politician in recent days.

Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III, who was not injured, brushed off the brazen Tuesday night stunt as the work of “political operatives,” according to The Albuquerque Journal.

The incident, which was partially captured on video, happened as about 70 people gathered to hear the Democrat speak at the Revel Entertainment Center, the paper said.

The venue’s owner confiscated a drone attached to a sex toy that was flying over the stage while the candidate spoke, and 20-year-old Kaelan Ashby Dreyer tried to get it back, according to the report.

“Is that a dong on a drone?” a woman in the audience reportedly asked.

A scuffle ensued and Dreyer threw a punch at the sheriff’s arm while reportedly yelling “he’s a tyrant.”

“He tried to take a swing at me and he glanced across my arm,” Gonzales reportedly said. “He struck me and I just took a step back. It wasn’t anything I was very concerned about. I’ve been in a lot worse situations”

The suspect was arrested on charges of petty misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, the article said.

The candidate said he believes three other people were involved in the perverted exploit, according to the paper.

On Wednesday, Gonzales held a news conference where he accused Dreyer and his cohorts of working for incumbent Mayor Tim Keller, a rival Democrat.

“It was a coordinated effort, very intentional, and these people were trained,” the candidate reportedly said.

“I was trying to answer one of the lady’s questions that was with this group of four that were political operatives for somebody, I believe possibly the other campaign,” Gonzales said, according to the paper.

Keller’s campaign reportedly said it had no part in the stunt, which it called “disruptive, rude and immature”

“To suggest we were behind it is pathetic and the kind of desperation that has marked Manny’s troubled campaign,” Keller campaign manager Neri Holguin told the paper.

For his part, the suspect also dismissed the allegation.

“Manny Gonzales is trying to associate me with Tim Keller or radical leftist behavior,” Dreyer told the Journal. “I’m not a fan of Tim Keller either and identify as libertarian.”

Gonzales has less than three weeks to collect enough signatures to be on the ballet, the article said.

Video posted on a Twitter account entitled “Dongcopter” shows the adult aviation device flying outside a church that was being visited by Republican congressional candidate Mark Moores last week.

The owner of the account changed her background image to show the drone harassing Gonzales, and posted a direct attack on the candidate late Wednesday night.

“For the record @SheriffManny/@MannyForABQ Tim Keller sucks too (more on that later) but at least he isn’t a corrupt cop trump nut who fought against police lapel cams and every other form of accountability for years. We are all dongcopter. Not you tho.”

I didn't know there was an election for Mayor this year, he is stupid and has made some very bad decisions that has gotten the city sued over the last 2 years. At least there are 2 other candidates besides Keller and Manny to vote for.

I just looked at the candidates and I was glad that the current mayor could be out, but his competition so far is kind of disappointing. How stupid is politics getting.

Yes Virginia, that IS a rubber d**k hanging from that drone ....

Think about it, when we grew up what did we have? Rubber band wind up balsa wood planes, maybe a glow in the dark frisbee. Now a kid can have a friggin' drone with an HD camera and it's own Twitter account! WTF ! Isn't that amazing?

Oh Gawd, this is priceless. My wife and I are still cracking up over this. Thanks you Albuquerque, thank you. I needed that ....

It was adult who owned and operated the drone. I don't know if he was arrested but I think what he did was assault, not the dildo on the drone but what he did afterwards. And you are welcome. Albuquerque doesn't get in the national news very often but when we do it is for something stupid like this.

Actually, once I read flying rubber dildo I just cracked up and paid little attention to the rest of it. Thousands of years of civilization to get here and we fly dongcopters to pester one another ....................

Mermaid Blamed for Car Crash in Jamaica

A fatal car crash on a bridge in Jamaica has renewed longstanding rumors within a nearby community the waters below are inhabited by a bloodthirsty mermaid. The accident, which saw one woman die and nine other people require hospitalization when a pair of vehicles collided head-on, reportedly took place in the town of Bog Walk on Tuesday morning. The crash occurred just days after another incident at the bridge wherein a woman also perished, leading to many in the community to cast the blame for the tragic events on a rather unlikely suspect: a mermaid said to lurk in the Rio Cobre, which runs beneath the bridge.

Frequent visitor to the river, Daniel Gayle, explained that legend has it that whenever the river "changes its color" and appears dirty, "that's when it's dangerous and that's usually when the mermaid is active." His assertion that there is a sinister supernatural being living in the water beneath the bridge was echoed by another resident who recalled an incident decades ago wherein a fisherman pulled a giant scale from the water and claimed that it came from a creature with a fish's tail and a human head. When the man went back to the river to try and catch the mermaid, it is said that the entity killed him.

The decades-old tale was seemingly confirmed by another resident, dubbed Lady G, who revealed that when the unfortunate man's body was found it was discovered that the creature had attached "a string of fish" to his shorts in what one assumes was some kind of warning to others who might dare to tangle with the mermaid. "This river is haunted," she said to a local media outlet, "it has its time when it takes a lot of lives and then cools down. Nothing can be done about it." According to Lady G, the deaths at the bridge will continue until the mermaid's thirst for blood is satiated. To that end, she ominously lamented, "sad to say, but we are expecting more."

Weird object spotted underwater in surfer video

Footage posted earlier this year on Instagram appears to show a weird shape being carried along by the waves. The clip, which can be viewed below, shows surfer Ryland Rubens riding the waves in San Diego, Southern California as part of an entry for the Regional Wave Of The Winter competition.

While his performance on a surfboard is certainly impressive, the video ended up attracting attention for a very different reason - if you look closely on the left-hand side, it is possible to see a large object being washed along by the wave.

Some have speculated that the object could be some sort of undersea creature, while others have offered up more skeptical interpretations of the clip - instead maintaining that it is nothing but a large clump of kelp or seaweed that has been dragged up from the ocean floor.

The object certainly does look a little strange, especially given its almost spider-like appearance. Sadly, however, it's much more likely that it is simply a piece of kelp being carried along by the tide.
