Fess up...are you one of 'them' ?

At Peace.
Well! A little 3n1 oil on the locomotive gears, then I rubbed down the track with a cloth. The Locomotive with matching Coal Bin and a Caboose ran as well as it did in 1976.

I only set up an oval with two straight pieces on each side, so I didn't add the box car, fuel tanker, and rock hopper today, but I do have some track for a bigger layout and will try to run it with all the cars next time... Christmas maybe?
It was fun... I sort of skipped back in time about 45 years this evening. And it was great!

So a question to anyone who wishes to answer...If you were to load up everything you own, all your material possessions, hoarded goods and functional goods, what size moving truck would you need to put everything into it, a 10ft, 14ft, 20ft, or 24ft moving truck and would you need to take more than one load?...The dimensions were chosen because they are comparable to what Uhaul truck rental sizes are...

Right now I would need a semi truck trailer and a 24 ft moving truck. I have a 2800 sq ft house and a 900 sq ft garage full of stuff. This winter I will be culling things. Maybe sooner because I want to rearrange my living room and get the sewing machine back in the spare bedroom. (still have a lot of stuff from my mother that I have not gone through and my daughter left stuff when she moved out)

Good question.

I reckon I can could get everything into a 20 foot container. It's the furniture that would take up most space.

Over the last few days I have been working on my workshop (as opposed to working in it) and I had time to reflect on this problem.

I have three cars. My daily driver Citroen Saxo. Due for it's test at the end of the month; will need some welding.
A Citroen ZX from years back. This is going through a major welding procedure that is being hampered by the rain we have been having recently. Needs to be done by the end of August to temporarily replace the Saxo.
And my BMW 518i . but that has been sold. Just waiting for the buyer to make room in his garage and take it away.

The point is, the big shed and most things in it are really related to the cars. If I get rid of the cars I will not need all the equipment. Hence not need all the space.
But as I define myself by what I have done over my life, I'm a machinist/mechanic, then getting rid of the cars will take away my reason detre.
Not looking forward to the day I have to hang up my driving license.

A few 24 footers at least, maybe an enclosed trailer for vehicles.

I hear that.

For me as long as I keep it in good order and functional, it isn't being damaged due to neglect or improper storage then to hell with it, I'll sit and admire it a while longer.

Can't stand to see useful tools, machines etc destroyed through neglect. Abuse might be OK. Rot is not.

I think I can almost everything of mine into a 20ft container, with the exception of my lumber and machinery, not including my car...I don't know how much space I would need for all the working lumber and hardwoods along with the various pieces of equipment, maybe a 24ft container if much of the lumber was stacked on top of the machinery...

Because it signifies an end of an era

Hard to see something that was once in daily use now sit and collect dust, almost like an old friend.

I mentioned animism somewhere and it's a concept that appeals to me and from what you've written wonder how you feel about it.

Yesterday I was working on the brakes on my motorcycle and had to get a wee little screw into a tight spot. So I took a long screwdriver and stroked it with a magnet a few times, the screw stuck to it and problem solved. I wondered if something like that might be true with us. Do you think regular use and/or emotion imbues some property, some very very faint representation on tools and other inanimate things like stroking a screwstick with a magnet did?

Sid you ever read 'Zen and the art of motor cycle maintenance' ?

I agree that when you are a natural mechanic you have a 'feeling' for the machines and tools. A sort of connection.

You do your part and they will do theirs. And as such they deserve care and respect.

Allowing your tools to get rusty or damaged is the cardinal sin.

Just below where my brother lives there is a guy who is the very antithesis of the mechanic. Whenever he does anything outside he just leaves all the tools, including the power tools , out in the open. They can be there for days whatever the weather. If they then won't work, he buys a new one. It's horrible to behold.

You said it better than I did. Yup, I think we’re on the page.

I don't know if you guys watch these 'hoarder' programs.

But I was watching one tonight where a guy had lots of tools, books, manuals etc. He had five houses worth of them.

Anyway, during the clear up of one house, one of the people doing this , producing a box with auto manuals in it, said 'all this stuff is on the web, why keep it ?'.
Well, firstly it isn't all on the web. And possibly more important is that the webmeisters get to say what is kept and what is not. Also you need equipment to view the electronic manuals. And sometimes subscriptions needed as well.
And when the software people want to 'upgrade', there is a chance you may not be able to access the info using your current machine.

No, you need your own library.

You can open a 600 year old book and read it.

Some ten year old info is lost because you machine does no longer have the correct format.

I'm no Luddite. Just cautious.

Not a hoarder in any way....but I do collect vinyl records but I'm fairly picky about what I buy. I only collect original vinyl...no reissues unless something comes my way very cheap. I try to spend no more than about $100 on a single LP but some go for $200-500 and a few in the thousands of dollars.
Mostly prog rock and classic rock but also the odd jazz LP and classical piece. I do have quite a few cds also. I also have some rock items and memorabilia.

I used to have tons of stuff but when I moved into this little apartment 13 years ago I got rid of everything. I could fit all of my stuff into the small U haul truck. I forget how big it is but it rents for $20. That would include all my furniture.

I also live by the one year rule. With the exception being footwear & clothing because we have all seasons here.

I've got some of my great-grandfather's tools and occasionally use one or two of them.

My brother has our great-grandmother's Singer pump pedal sewing machine from the old farm.
I have the receipt from the general store for it. Can't be too careful, might need it, only been 110 years.

Just wondering how you did that with DOS as DOS is an operating system, not and application.
I started out in DOS, and used BASIC for a long time; still do occasionally.

When my dad got me the pc he also got a book that told me how to do things. I think it was a screen saver. but that was nearly 40 years ago, and it`s hard for me to remember things write anymore.

Flashback from '76 or '77. I remember banging away at a keypunch machine to produce a stack of data cards and then noodling around with a big breadboard with some sort of premade jumpers. Stuck the breadboard in the guts of a monstrosity of a big IBM machine and put the stack of cards in a hopper. Push the button and after a lot of noise and no doubt a lot of electricity my prize was a big long tractor feed roll that printed out a drawing of the USS Enterprise made from asterisks.
