windows 11

Lol, it's preventing me from getting one because I don't want to spend money on another desktop computer in 3 years time. I know they don't just cut off support without lots of warning, but I don't want to ever purchase another system.

As soon as a new software package is released, it is immediately outdated. They are all (upgrades) created to get you the consumer to spend money.

Just like cars. I drive a car that has been trouble free except for the regular stuff like tires and a new exhaust. Maybe a new motor for the windows and the occasional battery replacement. Cars are no longer made to last more than 5 years tops.

The money they want for these things is insane! I almost swallowed my tongue when I was watching a show the other day where a 11 year old girl was given permission to purchase a cell phone. She paid with her own money and chose one that cost well over $600 and that was before taxes.

Seriously, is that how much they cost?

This is the first time in my memory that MS is introducing an operating system that is not backwards compatible for at least a couple of generations of computers. I hope this is not the start of a new trend.

There are a variety of moderately priced cellphones out there, both flip and smart. For over 10 years I've been using TracFone for prepaid plans and for the phones themselves. BestBuy and some other places have reasonable deals as well.

Many people, especially young people (?), have a strong preference for whatever phone is state of the art at the moment. These are invariably pricey.

Microsoft says they will end support for 10 in a few years, which would mean that 11 and the hardware it wants would be required. Microsoft says a lot of things, though. Sometimes it's just plain stupid, like most of what they are saying right now, but they eventually deal with reality. Often they don't deal with reality well, but they usually manage. I'll tell them to go to hell if they follow through with the current plan. I can get along just fine with a Chromebook, if I have to. I have half a dozen machines that could run Linux. I'd be tinkering with it now too, but I waste enough time on computers as it is.

I still use Windows 7 and XP, just because Microsoft doesn't support it doesn't mean its not worthy of still using, the security aspect is covered by the third party firewall software I use so its no issue to run Windows 7 normally as I would Windows 10 or 11...

One thing I really dislike about Windows 10 is that in the Administrative Services programs can be shut down directly with options to start at start-up or set to manual start-up or they can even be disabled...On previous Windows versions I would turn off Windows automatic update service as I prefer to do it manually at my convenience and when I'm not using the computer so it's not hogging resources when I need them...Well, Windows 10 doesn't allow that, it forcibly turns back on the Windows automatic update service even after I've forced it off...That tells me that Windows isn't allowing me total control of my computer and its software and that's a huge turn off...So I'm not inclined to use Windows 10 as much as Windows 7 or Linux because of that main reason, I must have control of my computer...

Good news for me. I ran the checker and verified that my primary laptop is Windows 11 compatible.
I would have been rather angry if it wasn't as I bought it this very year.

There are a couple of things you need to do if you want to check your computer thru Microsoft.
First go to https://insider.windows.com... and register with your Microsoft account and become a member of the Windows Insider Program. This involves downloading a utility by clicking "Update now" under the heading Windows Release Preview Channel.

The Utility has three tiers. The "Release Preview Channel" is the most basic, and includes the compatibility checker.

I cannot stand it when an application refuses to open and operate until it has been updated...I had a fuel savings app do thst to me when I was at the fuel pump getting petrol, it refused to open until I updated it and I'm not going to screw around with that at a fuel pump so I deleted it and haven't used it since...I can understand if I went a year without updating the application, but a week or two since the last update shouldn't have made a difference...I do not like insistent technology...

...
Sounds like they are basing their software on the Microsoft model of maximizing customer frustration. I have done the same thing when an app wouldn't work until I updated. It happens at the worst time.

Well, folks, I am using Windows 11 at this very moment. As it has been installed for less than an hour, I can't offer much of a review yet.

So far, all my apps are working, but I've only checked a few. The biggest obvious difference is the taskbar. It's less cluttered, and has a couple of new buttons.

One glitch (I hope it's just a glitch) that I've already noticed is that in order to "Show Desktop" you have to click on an invisible, ultra-thin line at the extreme right of the taskbar.

Also, Windows search doesn't always bring up the most useful or expected targets.

Was it a free upgrade?...

that little tiny doodad has been down there a while, forget when it first appeared
I found it by accident one day, after grumbling for months or years about the button disappearing with one "upgrade" or another.

From what I've seen, 11 is a typical Windows warm-over, with some improvements here, some idiotic deletions there, and a lot of pointless and counterproductive moving things around to make it look different. They are due for a real stinker, too, which makes me leery.

My new computer just landed at the store, I just got the email. They had to order it in. They are going to pick up my old one and transfer all the stuff I have on it to the new one. Then bring it here and set it all up for me including installing the anti virus program. It is only windows 10 but I made sure it was compatible for windows 11.

By the way, Pigfarmer. I was hunting for something yesterday and found the Christmas card I had chosen to send to you with the postage refund. I just have get a certified cheque and then find a post office so I can get an USA stamp and it will be on it's way. Hopefully by Friday.

There's nothing unique about Windows 11. If not for the hullabaloo about non-compatibility, it would have been barely noticed.

windows 10 on this Acer laptop, which I rarely use. mostly on my samsung galaxy 10.1" tabA. android9 OS. love the thing. belong to several musical groups and recording/video/sound etc is a breeze. likewise video visits with the grands or my sister out Vancouver BC way or zoom meeting for my docs appointment during the total 'stay home' covid lockdown. a versatile little unit. cost me nothing using our PC points. hey, nothing sometimes can yield something.

Bought the wife a new all-in-one computer with Windows 11 already installed.
I set it up for her and after a few months use...well not excited about it.
In some ways it is a bit nicer. In other ways it is a pain in the ass.
IMHO Windows 10 is better, and I still believe Windows 7 is the best so far.
