Good Bourbon

Visiting a friend... Jack Daniels and coke, no ice, is one of our favorites.

Had one... perfect...
I always enjoy one... sometimes two...

One thing that sucks for me is, alcohol just kills my sleep quality. And it doesn't take much to do it, I think it messes with my brain's ability to go into REM sleep. Otherwise I probably would drink whiskey more often. My grandfather drank a bunch of whiskey and beer back in the day in addition to lots of tobacco and unhealthy food and still lived to be 90.

That's a proven fact that alcohol messes with the brain's ability to rest...

In my 20's, there were a few years where I drank about a six pack a night. It was go to work, go home and drink beer, sleep on the couch, wake up and do the same thing. Along with my prodigious consumption of food and cigs back then it's a wonder I'm still alive.

I have never been much of a drinker.
I bought a 12 pack of beer in March.... 2 are still in fridge.

I had a bottle of Jack Daniels in my cabinet for over a year and never opened it.

I started tasting Bourbons straight a few years ago, in attempt to understand what the big deal is, since a few folks I knew started doing the same. There is a bourbon craze going right now, and while I enjoy drinks with bourbon in them, I am not sure I understand why there is such a craze...

A lot of new distilleries and barrelers and blenders are pushing out new brands.... cant say any of them really elevate beyond any of the originals....

But one stands out, because they are a true kraft distillery...
Being that I dont know alot about bourbon, I accelerated my samplings during the last couple months, only to conclude that, Bourbon is bourbon.

I do think Garrison Brothers is the best I have had so far, but no guarantees it will stay that way...
Right now I think they are...

Handcrafted bourbon is expensive... and for me, since I dont drink much, that isn't a problem... but I imagine the average everyday drinker will no doubt look for cheaper alternatives...

So I am trying to identiify those I would keep around...

As for the ones I have tried in my lifetime-

Top Shelf:
(If I were to only have 5 neat bourbons in my bar (and I usually only have one or two on hand)
Garrison Brothers
Four Roses Single Barrel
Elmer T. Lee
Crown Royal Reserve
Gentleman Jack

Mid shelf:
(Mostly mixers, but ok for sipping)
Jack Daniels
Buffalo Trace
Jameson
Wild Turkey 101
Bulleit

Bottom shelf:
(Meh... I wont bother buying these... but if the bartender says it is better to use these brands for a cocktail, thats good enough for me)
Evan Williams
Jim Beam
Canadian Club

As I try some others I may adjust this list... but so far that is what my taste buds prefer... as far as bourbon goes...

My sister was a bartender for years. The bottom shelf at her place was a bunch of rotgut selections in big plastic bottles like Kentucky Tavern and other names not worth remembering. Among patrons who actually had some extant taste buds, Maker's Mark was far and away the most popular.

I have Garrison Brothers, Buffalo Trace, and Makers Mark in my cabinet right now...
Garrison Brothers is saved for a special occasion...

Makers Mark is used mostly by my wife for baking in cakes and cookies... :)

I am sipping Buffalo Trace on occassion for a neat and straight with no ice.., 50 ml in one sitting is plenty...

I also have Jack Daniels Tennesee Fire left from mixing new years drinks, and some Southern Comfort... (A friend likes So Co and Lime on ice, so I keep it around, but usually wont drink it unless he wants some.... It is different, but it aint bad... )

Jack Daniels n coke seems to be the most popular drink among my friends for an average drink...

A few high faluting friends have sipping bars with all the high end kraft and bonded Bourbons and Rye. I really liked some of these... but 150 to 200 dollars a bottle.... well... they can give me all they want.... but I wont usually buy those.

I did get the bottle of Garrison Brothers, but I put it behind my open bottle of Buffalo Trace in the cabinet.

I will save the Garrison Brothers for a special occasion...

If Buffalo Trace is a 3.5 then Garrison Brothers Flagship is at least a 4.1

If I was still drinking I would like to try this. :)

This is right up there!
Bulleit, Jameson, Gentleman Jack, Buffalo Trace, and Wild Turkey 101 are all about the samee price point, and any are an easy choice.

It would take me two years to drink them all though. Haha.

I found a bottle of Elmer T. Lee. It is almost impossible to find... it wasn't on the shelf so I asked...
"Will you be getting Elmer T Lee? I heard this is the time of year it is released?"

He checked the computer-"Two arrived today. They are still unloading the truck... I will check."

He walked to the back and returned with one bottle.. "Yep, it was still on the truck."

Another guy walked to the service desk as I was checking out, "Will you be getting Elmer T Lee? I heard this is the time of year it is released?"

Both bottles sold before the truck was finished unloading!
