IBM Q research has built and tested an operational 50 qubit prototype processor, a huge leap up from its previous record of 17 qubits. The company is also set to make a 20 qubit quantum system available online for clients to try, with an updated superconducting design, connectivity and packaging. That'll let users run computations with a "field-leading" 90 microseconds of coherence, allowing "high-fidelity quantum operations," IBM says.

Quantum computers work much differently than regular supercomputers, taking advantage of weird quantum physics principals like "superposition." In theory, they can run specific programs, like encryption-cracking algorithms, many, many times faster than regular computers.

The 50 qubit system (shown below) is a significant leap toward practical quantum computers. In September, Harvard University researchers said they built a 51 qubit model, but it appears that IBM's model held "coherence" longer, allowing more calculations to be done. "We are really proud of this, it's a big frickin' deal," IBM AI and quantum computer director Dario Gil told MIT Technology Review. 50 qubit? 50 milliseconds?

A I7-7700 (a laptop processor) cranks about 150 GOPS (billion 64 bit operations per second).

Not sure you realised the concept entirely... theres a readout time available, before the qubits lose their internal states..

They are actually way too fast for human input direct interfacing

How IBM’s new five-qubit universal quantum computer works

My bad.

The computer operates at roughly 20,000 operations per second. There is a 50 ms window to do 1000 operations on a single operand.

Further they may have to repeat operations since there is a finite probability of error.

They had to add error correction just to make it work at all and from what I can tell the error rate is still pretty high.

Potentially it could be blazingly fast.

However clever algorithms frequently reduce problems one order of complexity or more.

As far a D-Wave, it is a hardware accelerator for special problems like pattern matching. IBM is cranking out a quantum GPC.

If there is a one in four chance of guessing the right card - the only way to improve the odds is by cheating.
- Unless you believe in things like telepathy - Or maybe quantum computers can see through the cards!

Maybe this is the real advantage of quantum computers - They can deny the world and create a fantasy to replace it.

Whos to say whats fantasy or not when it comes to mother nature. Them Quantum CPUs might be working in another domain not readily visible to us. Fantasy for us, but real down there.. We could use them without understanding it fully,, :huh8: LoL

It appears to be deciding if the answer is 0-3 by encoding the answer in two bits then doing quantum magic.

I'm going to see if I can find a better explanation of the example because that one just raises questions.

Is it true that they have developed a Quantum computer that's 1 billion times more powerful than any super computer on the planet ? That's scary if true.

Btw, just curious, are there any quantum computers that are being / has been commercialised or are they still being research on ?
