Astronomers send message to planets 12 light years away

What could go wrong?...This is insane and these astronomers should not take it upon themselves to attempt any contact with possible intelligent alien life without the approval of the governments of the world...They are essentially speaking for the human race on earth when sending signals like this and it could have very disastrous consequences if they contact aggressive alien species...This is a very foolish and ignorant act they have done and put all of humanity at serious risk...They may have sealed the fate of future generations...

What could possibly go wrong? Astronomers send a message to two potentially habitable planets 12 light years away - and if aliens see it, they could respond by 2042

  • Scientists beamed a message towards GJ 273, a red dwarf star, last month
  • The star was chosen as it is known to host two potentially habitable planet
  • The message included a science and maths 'tutorial' and 33 musical excerpts
  • But not everyone is convinced by the plan, with experts including Professor Stephen Hawking, warning that if aliens discovered us, it could 'end life on Earth'
SHOULD WE BE WARY OF ALIENS?

If there are any intelligent alien life forms out there, Stephen Hawking thinks we're playing a dangerous game by trying to contact them.

The physicist believes if aliens discovered Earth, they are likely to want to conquer and colonise our planet.

'If aliens visit us, the outcome could be much like when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans,' he said in an interview.

But co-founder and former director of the Seti Institute, Jill Tarter, doesn't think this will be the case.

She argues any aliens who have managed to travel across the universe will be sophisticated enough to be friendly and peaceful.

'The idea of a civilisation which has managed to survive far longer than we have...and the fact that that technology remains an aggressive one, to me, doesn't make sense,' she said.

You think sending the message "There is food here, come and eat us" was not well thought out???

The only thing that will saved us is it is highly unlikely that any aliens can tolerate our atmosphere.

Oxygen is highly reactive. The only reason free oxygen exists is CO2 conversion by plants.

About 2.45 million years ago some bacteria discovered photosynthesis and decided to outcompete other bacteria by poisoning them.

Until then free oxygen didn't exist.

Without a CO2/Nitrogen atmosphere and bad luck there isn't much change this would be repeated.

When you start speculating about aliens it isn't obvious that they would need to breath at all (other than exhaling).

Aliens could wear suits if our atmosphere wasn't proper for them, but I think we will find far in the future that there's many worlds with similar atmospheres, some steeped in methane for instance and some similar to ours...The concentrations of CO2 or oxygen may vary though...

Just blindly calling on all our spacial neighbors is extremely foolish and ignorant, the astronomers could doom us all by such reckless action...

They just found another place where the planets are in the Goldilocks Zone and its only 11 light years away. Anyone know Captain Kirk ??

Many years ago, I had my name added in a microchip on the stardust spacecraft..
Since mission ended in 2011, Its adrift somewhere in space .. The aliens who find it can read it, lol

That's not good. When the Aliens find it they are going to hunt you down first.

Gee, let's look at what "Goldilocks" looks like.

Ross 128 b

1. Roughly earth sized. So far so good.
2. Rotates around the primary every 9.9 days. What the hell??? It practically sits in the gas envelope of the star.

Ross 128 b is 20 times closer to its star than Earth is to the sun.

Mercury is 0.39 AU from the Sun. The earth is 1 AU from the sun. This planet is 0.05 AU from its primary.

Unless you've spent time in hell and adapted to the temperature, I doubt this planet would be to your liking.

Be better than being here waiting for the Nukes to go off.

I was also kind enuff to add my younger brother and sisters names. So its a one chance in three,, pretty good odds .:laugh8:

That is why you have siblings, so you have someone else to sacrifice while you figure out how to escape.

Siblings are really good for finding out if something is good to eat or to test if something is dangerous.

"Here Mikey, eat this".

You don't wait for the nukes to go off, you "tailgate".

Warm-up the grill, throw on the steaks and chicken breasts (I always wondered how they grew chickens without heads, wings, or legs), fresh corn on the cob, and the aluminum wrapped potatoes, break out the whiskey and beer.

And sit around in your lawn chairs wearing PLZT goggles betting on when the brilliant flash that hails the end of civilization will come, while feasting and boozing.

Technically even if you are facing away from the blast, you need protection and at a minimum should cover your eyes with your arm (yeah the reflection is that strong).

The goggles cut the light by a factor of over 1 million:1.

I believe that there are peaceful alien races out there, and that there are malicious ones too. I feel that sending out any kind of message or signal like this could sound dangerous, but is not. If malicious aliens wanted to invade the earth or use the earth or us, for their own needs, then they would have done that already. Think about how much more advanced they would be, not just technologically but spiritually and naturally e.g. evolution. They already know where we are, its just that other, more friendly and, you could say civilized, in relation to human society, alien race(s) are most likely protecting us. Like how we protect endangered species from predators. We would be defenseless against an alien invasion of sorts, they would be too advanced for us to comprehend what is going on, not to have any affect against them. We as a society aren't ready for full disclosure, not for a while, as most people would react with panic and fear, where as some individuals like most people here and others already aware of the alien reality, wouldn't overreact as much.

No one ever stops to think about the details. Every case in the entire history of planet earth of when one isolated culture met another the first thing that transpired was the exchange of Diseases. People can believe that their alien microbes won't make us sick because they are alien. But the fact is, Pathogens don't care if you aren't zeta reticulon or draconian or a bigfoot. When they get inside your body and your body doesn't know how to fight them, you will get sick. We should Both fear and dread the day They make physical contact with us. All it would take to wipe out the entire human population is for one of our own diseases to mutate and poof. No humans. Imagine. The aliens could come with full and complete intention of wiping us all out, And they could do it with a handshake and smile.

No way man, People are letting their science fiction fantasies drive them. The reality is much grimmer I'm afraid.

Don't you think that if one of the races were to introduce them selves with disclosure to all, including the public, they would consider all the potential risks and impacts they would have on us. I feel that when they would eventually come forward to us, it would be in the very distant future, where our medical knowledge would be far more advanced than now, and I feel that we would've, in a sense, mastered our health, as in potential infections and diseases wouldn't be a problem for us. I feel it all comes down to our development as a race at the time. However I agree with you when you talk about how the aliens could bring diseases/current diseases become mutated due to their presence. I just feel that they would only make that kind of contact when we are ready.

I was exposed to something, a couple different times... They have really good medical technology, and innoculate themselves, and their guests. They use a very targeted approach. I doubt we need to worry.

You, cannot speak for all the possible species out there...When you say 'they' that is not inclusive of every species in the milky way...

Yes, I should qualify that as unique to my experience. Thank you for your reply.

I suppose their tech could just as easily be used against us....

And I am sorry foe any species who might visit Earth without the tech to inoculate themselves from our potential pathogens!

I might be reckless if one assumes there is anyone there to hear it....lol.

Also if the race is highly advanced and can travel faster than light they'd likely know about us already.

Our planet was much different when plants began changing the oxygen content of the atmosphere using photosynthesis over 3 billion years ago.
