Fans of the X-Files have lashed out in anger over the plot twist in its season premiere.
The sci-fi show, starring Gillian Anderson, who plays Agent Dana Scully, and David Duchovny who plays her FBI partner Fox Mulder, returned for its 11th season this week.
But after just one episode, fans have taken to
Twitter to criticize the story line, with one going as far as saying they felt 'violated'.
But the plot sparked a backlash online with some taking to Twitter to express their disappointment.
One wrote that it was 'the worst twist ever. I feel violated,' while another said: 'I have so much rage about the last 5 minutes of #TheXFiles. OMG.'
The show was described as 'too confusing to even enjoy' by one viewer, who asked: 'What just happened to me?'
Another targeted X-Files creator Chris Carter, saying: 'The Cigarette Smoking Man impregnates Scully with "alien science" to create a superhuman aka william? When you thought Chris Carter's writing couldn’t get any messier...'
But the episode divided opinion with some saying the show, which airs on Fox on Wednesdays, was 'incredible'.
The X-Files proved a massive hit when it was first broadcast in 1993. It ran for nine seasons before being axed in 2002. Season ten was aired after a 14-year gap in 2016.
Gillian Anderson said in December that she would be leaving the show after season 11.
'I’ve said from the beginning this is it for me. I was a bit surprised by people’s [shocked] reaction to my announcement because my understanding was that this was a single season.'
