Gigantic Asteroid Heading Towards Earth

It seems we are damn lucky so far. Its a dangerous solar system, and when it strikes it will strike with avengence!

It makes me wonder if we are not due to get hit by a big one soon. Sure have been a few close shaves lately. No one can stop them or even predict them and even if they do who is going to save us from getting blatted ? Will the scientific community come to our aid or do they go up in a puff of smoke like the rest of us.

I am looking out for the asteroid that is covered in tin foil.

Not sure why you are looking for asteroids while covered in tin foil.

Actually people are trying to find ways to divert them as pointed out in the OP......but now it appears people don't want them to try.

A big one smacks the s*** out of the earth about every 64 million years. We are due.

Some humans will survive any catastrophe. Most of the deaths will occur in third world countries so the average IQ of the earth will go up and a population crisis will be averted...

Now that I think about it the asteroid search and impact prevention efforts should be defunded immediately.

The only animals we need to save are cows, sheep, chickens, and a couple of species of fish (I like shark and Mahi mahi).

I don't give a rats ass about the whales and don't intend to save them, the greenunists won't let us eat them anyway.

The "whole web of life"/Gaia thing is bullshit, most of the animals are a waste of planet, and I can do wirhout mosquitos.

Actually luck has nothing to do with it, these rocks have been moving around out solar system for millions of years, the ones that are going to hit anything anytime soon have done so, others may have longer passing bys before striking...

The earth go hit with all the deadly ones already in my opinion, if we get hit in the future it's probably by the one which took millions of years of orbits to finally reach the planet...

There are approximately 180 impact craters on earth....the one from 65 million years ago wasn't even the biggest crater. So yes the earth will be in the firing line again.....it only depends on if we can stop it. But now I guess we have to worry about the nutcases that do not want to stop it.

Well...

If we addressed the total wastes of money by zeroing out the global warming budget ($22 billion in 2016) and renewable energy subsidies ($163.9 billion in federal dollars for wind alone since 2007) we could toss a couple of billion at impact prevention.

The solar system has been more or less cleared of debris. Chicxulub was about 15 km in diameter (radius 7.5 km). There just isn't that much large debris out there. A city killer is a possibility.

The wild card is the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud. These are both the fault of the Dutch and if France had absorbed Holland we wouldn't have to worry about them.

A gravitational interaction that dislodges objects from these sources could be problematic.

Actually that impact crater is approximately 180 kilometers across.......or 110 miles. The asteroid is what was 6.3 to 9.4 miles across/long......its actual shape is unknown. But based on the shapes of asteroids I doubt it was round.

Your deep respect of nature is out of this world.. but you like numbers more..

There are about 10^31 virions on Earth.

And yet we are pretty alive and well.

Dont worry about whales CB

I think asteroids are les of a concern than humans over running the planet, consuming everything... and polluting in our wake until we pretty much destroy ourselves. I think we are closer to destroying ourselves than most people will admit.

An asteroid might help avert some of that.

Well maybe asteroids serve a dual purpose creating life on planets or ending it. Also we have Yellowstone and Vesuvious and the like to contend with all overdue for a cataclysm plus North Korea et all . We humans live on the knife edge most of the time. Planet killer Apophis will be interesting in 2036 , Apophis will fly extremely close to Earth in 2029 and 2036 .

It weighed about 6e11 metric tons.

You can imagine any shape you like.

Don't have to imagine the shapes.....and there are also 42 impact craters greater than 20 kilometers across. That means there are approximately 130 or so smaller.

So your 10 to 15 kilometer crater would be a small one.

Just to reassure you, I don't worry about whales at all. Believe we should start hunting them. They eat plankton for no useful purpose that real fish, that we eat, eat.

Non-bacteria are only about 1% of animal life by weight.

Saving endangered species is a fool's errand. All my favorites, the dodo, the saber-toothed tiger, the thylacine, the mammoth, and all dinosaurs are gone already.

The greenunists want to save animals I don't like, such as the snail darter that is just another smelt. Saving animals I don't like is pointless.
